Zalman Wins Kotaku's Least Worst 3D Gaming Display CES Award
Posted by Michael McWhertor at 1:40 PM on January 11, 2008
Congratulations to the team at Zalman for walking away with this year's coveted Least Worst 3D Gaming Display award, which I suppose will now have to be a yearly tradition when we cover CES. Of all the companies demonstrating custom 3D solutions for PC games, Zalman's caused the least eyestrain, generated the lightest amount of nausea and required players to suffer the least dorky eyewear. Playing Unreal Tournament 2004 was actually quite fun in simulated 3D. What made the experience even better wat that crowds had thinned on the fourth day of CES 2008 to the point where we don't think anyone but Zalman reps saw us wearing dainty polarized glasses. Kudos to them and the team at Nvidia for making a nearly interesting experience!

Why all the hate on 3D? I've been a sucker for the stuff since I first went to EPCOT as a kid and watched Michael Jackson gyrate like he was right in front of me!

I for one, am really looking forward to 3D immersion stuff hitting mainstream - graphics are getting better and better but only to a point. I've seen "proper" 3D that doesn't cause eyestrain or headaches, and it's good stuff.
There's such a huge stigma associated with 3D due to the red blue anaglyph(that what it's called?) method that vaguely worked with games like Rad Racer, 3D World Runner, and Magic Carpet.
People need to know that this stuff is different, and no longer(for the most part) requires super special support to work.
Then again, I tried to play Magic Carpet in crossed eyes mode before. Blarg.

@Kirbytheslayer: See what I did there?: Depth perception, perhaps?
When talking about 3D, we're not (or at least, we shouldn't be) talking about making the screen seem to float closer to the head; but about stereoscopy.
THAT would increase immersion.

I hope in the future we "plug into" a game...that would be sweet.

@Morberis: No.
Not in any way.
You're still seeing the same thing, just about 4 inches closer to you.
I could just scoot my chair closer and get the same effect it provides.

Is that not what 3D helps provide?

So, hrmm... So, to make an image appear 3D, you need two slightly different images of the same thing, which means that computers are going to need to render things twice as fast for the same results in 3D. Which basically means these monitors will only be useful 2 years after a game is released when GPUs have caught up enough to be able to render 2x the frames. (Expect for Crysis, which will only be playable on this in the 2020's.)

@amost:
If it was it would transcend time and we'd have all the awesome future PS3 games already, making it a great buy but negating the need to make any games for it since we already had awesome future games. Of course that would lead to no more future games because no one's making games for it which means normal games would sell which means people would make games for it which would DESTROY THE UNIVERSE!
So yes. It's 4-D and we're living in a recreation of the universe. This time Sony was smart enough to hide the awesome games from the users and dole them out at a measured pace.

Who started this 3D crap?
Someone assclown must have said something at some conference and now everyone is rushing out to deliver the next best thing when it comes to a gaming experience.
This smells of Patcher.

When will people realize that 3D is not the future?
We need to back-pedal away from it as fast as possible.
There's no actual advantage to 3D other than cheap novelty value.
The real future is in immersion.

Whats with all the 3d type thing going on. I guess it brings you that much closer to real experience. I wouldn't mind it though as long they simulated everything right.

@Iceman B.: Saw these at CES and was impressed with the technology, but it wasn't something I wanted to look at for more than 5 minutes.

Sorry Mr. McWhertor, but this Zalman solution doesn't hold a candle to the IZ3D monitor, which I'm astounded hasn't been covered here. As a lifelong fan of 3D, the iz3d 22" 3d monitor is the most exciting gaming exhibit I saw at this year's CES.
Too bad I won't be able to afford it until 2009 or so when it drops below $500.

I believe Philips is developing real 3D tv's which don't require a set of glasses nor nauseating graphics at all.
See [www.business-sites.philips.com] for more info.
I'm eager to see where 3D will go in the future.

Why does everybody want 3D? It's totally pointless when you can only SEE in two dimensions really. The only difference is that it can "Come at you" which ends up just detracting from a game instead of adding.

This looks a lot like a 3D display I tried at GDC last year. May have been the some manufacturer, I don't know. It did work pretty well--the glasses were lightweight (they're just polarized lenses) and it didn't seem to cause eye strain, so it seems like it would be possible to play for a while with this setup.

Apparently it works best with Painkiller because it's got specific support for 3D. As with the demo content pre=loaded. Maybe Kotaku should have tried that out.

@d3ath_fly: Well, an immediate use for 3D that springs to mind is for racing games - I don't think that being able to better tell how far a turn is away from you instead of guessing would be detracting from your experience at all. 3D isn't just about "it's coming right at me!"; a lot of it is about giving weight to the world and giving it a better feel(IE immersion). Lots of existing tech has a similar goal: vibration feedback, in-game physics, positional audio(or even stereo itself if you go past gaming), specialized controllers(from complex ones like Steel Battalion to the simple flight stick), motion control, touch screens, etc. Vibration feedback especially is analogous to the 3D stuff coming out. People playing with the DualShock 3 have been remarking how much they missed it. If you get to play games in 3D, you miss not having it with other games, because it's neat.
As for the whole "we only see in 2D anyway", most of us aren't pirates or cyclopes and experience the benefit of stereoscopic vision because we see 2D images...that are different in each eye. If we only saw in 2D, 3D movies would do nothing. I think things have been leading up to it anyway. Remember when parallax scrolling was the shit?

I think there's more chance of that guy with his 3d depth simulation using a Wiimote getting the idea integrated into the next generation of consoles than these monitors taking off. Now that would be something I'd pay for.

These guys seem too have something that works in a similar way to Johnny Lee's head tracking device.
Although it's difficult to tell how well it works since nobody who owns/makes the system seems to have made the intuitive leap that Mr Lee did by showing the action with a camera from the users perspective.
Maybe they have a stand at the CES and you could check it out?
