Mercenaries 2 Officially Delayed By EA
Posted by Michael McWhertor at 10:38 AM on February 1, 2008
Electronic Arts announced its quarterly earnings today, officially delaying Mercenaries 2: World In Flames to fiscal year 2009. The game was rumoured to have been pushed back from its February release date to August based on retailer listings, with EA officially now providing an April 1, 2008 to March 31, 2009 shipping window for the Pandemic Studios shooter. EA execs did not clarify a more specific date in today's quarterly earnings conference call.
The company provided the same window of release for Battlefield: Bad Company, a Digital Illusions co-op shooter originally slated for a 2007 release. We'll, of course, let you know when we hear more solid release dates for these two shoot-fests.

@dnez: People will blame anything on the Ps3.
It's the cool thing to do.
DMC4 was originally developed for the Ps3, but people still accuse development as why the Ps3 version costs more.
I even heard one guy claiming Alan Wake was delayed due to the Ps3.

Since the PS3 version was the lead SKU, this is one of the few delayed PS3/360 titles that can't can't be attributed whose delayed can't be blamed on PS3 development issues..or can it?
Anyway, I am really bummed out, I was really looking forward to this game. However, when you think about the premise its pretty ambitious. It has an almost totally destructible environment and online CO-OP to boot. Most console developers have just gotten to online CO-Op, but Mercenaries takes it to a new level with the destructible environment. I think they have balls to attempt it in the first place and I really hope it pans out. Bad Company was the game that was supposed to tide me over until Mercs. 2 was released but it looks like it is suffering the same fate. I just hope we both games by Fall at the latest. If Mercs 2 doesn't ship in 08, this year will pale in comparison to 07. Its going to take more than GTA and Spore ti match the quantity of awesome games in 07.

You know, if companies would just stop giving release estimates, they would not have to delay anything. Schedules are for developers and publishers, not customers. Just tell me when it goes gold and stop wasting my time with "estimates" that do nothing more than make me frustrated and not want to buy your game.
That being said, is there a release date for Mirror's Edge yet? I can't wait for that game to come out.

@Mr. SiThNiNjA: You have absolutely no idea what you're talking about. Stop drinking the haterade.
I have visited Pandemic, and it is a mess. They are severely lacking senior developers and some of their development processes are serious WTFs. This had nothing to do with EA, in fact, a little shot of EA discipline would probably go a long way to helping them get things sorted out.

WTF is wrong with you people crying about delays, what would you prefer them to ship it out before its ready?
You should be glad EA is given the teams the chance to really polish the game and ensure its of a high quality!
I think many of you underestimate just how much is involved in creating a game these days.

@vsove: In this case it is because EA "acquired" Pandemic after they had already started development. IMO this is about EA being EA and delaying the game because thay are EA and have no idea what they are doing anymore. They should have left things up to Pandemic and quit F'ing things up like only EA is capable of.

Why am I not surprised? Every franchise game gets delayed these days, especially the ones that little is known about or nobody has played publicly. Such as SW:FU, FF13, MGS4, Too Human, HAZE, SSBB, RE5, BIA:HH........
It's not like I ever believe in ANY of the release dates nowadays. They are worth nothing. Live by "it's out when it's out" and you'll stop yourself from waiting for games.
Which will make your life less and less filled with videogames. Is this really the path videogaming is going down? Delays, unreliable & expensive hardware and a near dead PC platform that people are abandoning?
Videogame crash incoming! Yea I'm being quite cynical and exaggerating here, but I'm just fed up with these delays. If you don't know when the game is going to be finished, then don't announce a release date, EA/Sony/Microsoft/Nintendo/Ubisoft/...

Guys, why are you complaining about EA delaying something. It means they are LEARNING, not unlike a small child learns how to hammer the right blocks into their correspondingly shaped holes. I, for one, would like to see EA spend more time on its sequels, which both of these games are. Apparantly my prayers (along with thousands of others) have been heard by the sequel king.

@synchronicity: "EA DISCIPLINE???" Are you freaking kidding me? Have you PLAYED a game from EA lately? You obviously didn't play Madden 08 for the PS3! If releasing a game with that many bugs in order to make a deadline is discipline then maybe you are right. I will admit I have never "visited" Pandemic personaly but the last game of their's I played was solid and well put together. The last EA game I played seemed like a Beta build that they rushed out to make the street date. If not believing in a company based on personal experience is considered " drinking Haterade " then pass me the Fruit Punch flavor and get me a straw.

@meltyman:
The game was announced in May of 2006. It was never supposed to be a PS3 launch title.
Developers really need to stop announcing games years before they are going be released though...they lose a lot of appeal when you wait for them for 2 years.
I've noticed that Japanese games tend to be announced and released within a year, sometimes months. The US game industry really needs to learn a lesson from them.
That game Faith and a .45 sounded pretty cool and then I see it's targeted for 2010. We're gonna be looking down the barrel of new consoles at that point, not to mention making contact with alien civilizations.
