Nintendo's Wii Peripheral Patents Are Hilariously Bad

Posted by Michael McWhertor at 2:28 PM on February 1, 2008

wii_patent_lolz.jpgA recently published patent application from Nintendo reveals that the company has patented a series of hilariously oddball Wii peripherals, possibly attempting head off some more questionable add-ons from third party peripheral manufacturers. If you thought the Wii Wheel, Wii Balance Board and Wii Zapper were something else, you haven't seen anything yet.

Nintendo has filed patents for Wii peripherals including a bicycle, skateboard, fishing rod, baseball bat, a trio of helmets and visors, even a teddy bear stuffed with a Wii-mote. The patent application is dated May 9, 2006, preceding the Wii launch, and we don't expect much of these to actually become real-world products.

Still, the original patent, uncovered by 22hundred.net is worth looking at, if only to imagine a horrible alternate universe in which Teddy Ruxpin was your primary control method. A few choice images from the patent are included in the gallery below.
