"90 Percent of DS Users Playing Pirated Games"
Posted by Brian Ashcraft at 12:40 AM on February 5, 2008
Let's cut to the chase. John Hillier of the UK's Entertainment & Leisure Software Publisher Association is quote by The Sunday Post as saying about the R4 storage device used to pirate games:
In America, it's thought 90 percent of Nintendo DS users are playing pirated games because of R4s...
This coming from ELSPA's manager of Intellectual Property Crime Unit! Out of anyone in the UK, he should know what he's talking about. Now, the ELSPA is saying that Hillner never stated that, that it was a misquote. "ELSPA would certainly never presume to comment about America or anywhere else outside of the UK," points out the ELSPA. Whether it's misquotes, dumb quotes or whatever, that 90 percent number is way high, no?

I find pirating games a stupid practise.
If you like a game, just freaking buy it. Otherwise they won't be able to continue making the games.
And people try to say they have a flash card/modded console for completely legitimate homebrew.
Sure thing.
That's like saying you use limewire and torrents purely to share your home videos.

ELSPA Denies Saying 90% Of Americans Pirate DS
That's the denial post people are talking about, Wilson posted this Friday. Not a big deal people, is it really worth complaining every single time something gets double posted?

"The quotes from The Sunday Post were ascribed to his name from another article which originates from a website in Singapore. This, it appears, is where The Sunday Post first found out about the supposed R4 situation and for some reason unknown to John have quoted him on what this article said."

Why does everyone assume that R4 cards (and similar flash carts) are used solely for pirating games? There is a legitimate homebrew community out there brimming with excellent, free, LEGAL software and games for download. I wish the media would at least mention this fact when discussing these things so people wouldn't automatically jump to the conclusion that they are completely wrong and evil.

90% is quite high. Of the 15 people I know, that have a DS only 2 of them have this device. I stopped pirating after getting a few DC games because I found that I didn't care whether or not the game got played because I didn't pay for it.

@Milihpen: Supposedly thats the direction they're going with the DS2, put built-in storage on it and set up a VC-style game download store. I for one doubt the rumors that they'll eschew removable cards entirely, but who knows? ;)

Wow, Kotaku's really on the ball with this one. This was already dismissed by ELSPA last week.

While I believe 90% of an overstatement, I do have to admit that the community of friends in Ottawa, Ontario has a large popular of flash cartridge use.. But to sum it to 90% everywhere.. No way.
Everybody I know who owns a DS does have a flash cartridge in Ottawa though.. And this is an honest truth. But this community is very tight-knit, so anything that reaches out to one will surely spread around like wild-fire.

Sunday post regularly features stories about grandmothers who have lost their cats in central scotland.
A bit random that it wages in on a (fictional?) quote from a european agency on a US issue.
Seems a bit of a leap in terms of journo jurisdiction... and is "muckle" cack in my humble opinion.

I buy all my DS games as well, but I can see the convenience in having all your games on one card instead of having to swap out games all the time.
Perhaps this is something Nintendo could look in to, and set up a digital distribution shop. That would definitely be amazing.

Not totally unbelievable. DS games are easily perceived as way overpriced for their physical size and the amount of time you get out of them, and it's far too easy to copy and paste those .nds files to your 1GB MicroSD card... *ahem*
Anyway, I was never asked to partake in this survey, therefore it is a crock!

Not only was this posted before as HIRO0015 points out, we also had a separate post on the latter part of this article, no? I'm sure I've heard the "he did not say this" from the ELSPA from here before.
Even so, lol. R4s kill the buzz of having a new game anyways.

All ELSPA do right now is run the charts right? I'm unsure why they're still relevant.
@SanjiX:I guess that the R4 is being used as a generic trademark like hoover and biro.

I know 10 people who have DSes, and the only one that owns an R4 is a friend who bought one after asking me about it. Even he is a major purchaser of games (I told him if he wanted me to advise him on this he would have to keep buying DS games), the main reason he wanted the R4 was for Music and the ability to have his 10 or so games he wants to play in just one case.
Like Emulation, there is a certain barrier of effort and even skill involved in pirating DS games that automatically bars about 75% of the potential users from messing with it, or at least getting very far.
My friend with the R4 also tells me he thinks he has spent more time actually working on new menu themes for it in Photoshop than he has playing it ;)

I've seen this posted elsewhere. This is closer a huge overstatement, as I'm sure the majority of Nintendo DS owners have no idea what a flash cartridge is at all. Nintendo has stated themselves that these haven't hit critical mass and while it's a concern, is far more blown out than what Hillier stated.
