Mizuguchi: I'm Too Artistic, I Know
Posted by Kotaku US Edition at 11:40 AM on February 8, 2008
Tetsuya Mizuguchi, founder of Q Entertainment and best known for his work on Rez, Space Channel 5 and Lumines took the stage at DICE today to talk about the future of gaming and give attendees a quick history lesson on all things MIzuguchi. His talk, titled "Art vs. Commerce" focused on his career-long struggle to balance the artistic and the fiscally responsible. From the wildly successful Sega Rally—which sold 20,000 full-sized arcade units and 1.5 million on consoles and PCs—to the commercial underperformer Rez—a game for which he declined to offer sales data.
Mizuguchi explained he was inspired by games at a young age, fascinated by Atari's dedicated Pong platform. He says he also discovered the music of The Beatles at the same time, combining the two experiences in a visual and emotional way.
He says he later was motivated to join Sega when he saw the Sega R-360 arcade cabinet for the first time. The enclosed, fully rotating cabinet gave developer AM2's G LOC a more realistic flight simulator experience (and surely induced plenty of nausea). When Mizuguchi saw the R-360 for the first time, he thought "Wow, who did this?"
His first project at Sega, arcade racer Sega Rally, got its own answer to the R-360 later, with a full-sized rally car chassis that sold a total of four units.
Moving on to the console division, the producer went to work on Space Channel 5. It was the result of his fascination with MTV culture as a child and his first foray into merging the emotional response from music with interactive entertainment.
His next was Rez.

The game, once known as K-Project was not just inspired by the paintings of Wassily Kandinsky, a Russian painter who had experience with the condition known as synesthesia. It was also partially inspired by Mizuguchi's early fascination with the Sensorama, a multi-modal device that promised an experience combining wide vision, motion color, stereo sounds, aromas, wind, and vibrations. "Wow," Mizuguchi said, questioning "What is this? What's happening inside?"
Combining those two motivators with Mizuguchi's interest in understanding why people, regardless of region, reacted to music at clubs and festivals physically—and vocally, as Mizuguchi said "Waaaaagggh!", arms stretched high.
These combinations continued, with games like Lumines, which recreated the "play with music" gameplay design and Ninety Nine Nights, Q Entertainment's attempt to combine action games and movies. NNN, Mizuguchi explained, was heavily influenced by Akira Kurosawa's Rashomon. Lumines II, which felt to many like a retread, was an attempt to more heavily incorporate music videos into the gameplay.
All of these marriages of medium are just portions of what Mizuguchi feels will bring to game development, now, according to him, still in its infancy. The "Big Bang" he says will be a hybrid product for a mass audience that combines online connectivity, video games, music, movies, community and advertising.
Since moving to Q and partnering with friend and now CEO, Shuji Utsumi, Miz says he's begun to come to terms with balancing art and commerce. Utsumi, he says, has been a good influence, especially when Mizuguchi becomes "too artistic." "Games," he says "are entertainment, not just art."

@ffmusicdj: Yeah he was, the game itself was done by the south korean studio Phantagram who also did the KUF series.
The game was neat and all but had some issues.
I personally would prefer to see Miz go out and make what he wants to make instead of trying to play "fit in" with such titles.

If games like Rez come out when he's being "too Artistic" this Utsumi fellow should let him run wild!

I remember the first time I played rez it felt odd how you didnt move the character only where you aimed, but then I realized it helped make the game so much more enjoyable in a sense removing that extra layer of concentration that would have been needed to play it. Since all you do is have to aim.

Rez 2's levels should be like the last level in Rez: have a deep meaning, and tell a powerful story.
Man, I remember when I got to the last level in Rez... holy shit... and I thought that it couldn't get better than levels 1,2,3... man, was I wrong.

@AZRoboto: Let's forget about the rythm element for a bit. Let's see REZ as a plain shooter on rail. Do you really think it's a bad game gameplay wise? Were all Panzer Dragoon games bad because all you did was "shoot stuff down a straight path"?
I could see the point in Panzer Dragoon, and I can so see the point in REZ. The music element is just the icing on the cake.

@AZRoboto:
For one thing, when you actually "get" the gameplay, you realize that your targeting and firing can sync to the music somewhat. The better you get, the more complex the interaction between action and audio, and the more palpable your play style's effect will be on the music and game difficulty. It's pretty cool, and for $10, totally worth the price of admission.
Very trippy and immersive, Rez is still a shooter at heart. Getting to that last stage is pretty amazing, as the environments and music just keeps getting better and more dynamic as you play.

@AZRoboto: It was one of the first "rythm" games with serious style, and the last level actually has a theory on the meaning of life, all philosophical and stuff. It gets very trippy towards the end.

@AZRoboto: The game gets better in the second stage and onward.
In the first stage all the enemies are downed with a single shot. Later you get enemies that require 3,4, 8 and even more to bring down. It is often easy to survive the level, but getting all the enemies takes careful and efficient management of your firing rate.
The boss fights also get better and better.
That game is truly worth the 800 points. If MS loved us, they would have given us all Rez instead of Undertow.

I didn't think Rez HD was all that good.
Of course, I only tried the trial version, but I didn't see the 'point' of the game at all.
So you're this thing that goes straight down a path and you shoot things, and they beep and boop. I don't get it. It felt like an interactive screensaver with noise.
What am I missing here?

Thanks for covering what Mizuguchi had to say at DICE. He is one of the most revolutionary Japanese creators out there right now; starting his own studio before all the copy cats, creating unique music based ganes, etc. Thanks again for covering his speech.

A version of Rez should be released for the Wii. Wiimote pointing Rez makes a lot of sense to me, and a Transvibrator could easily be made to attach to a Wiimote -- if not simply make the Wiimotes Transvibrators themselves.

I'm sorry, but the only way the an average person is ever going to experience synesthesia is a couple good hits of acid (or some shrooms).

I recently bought Rez HD after enjoying the demo and hearing all the acclaim. I thoroughly enjoyed it and think it's well worth the $10. Once the game clicks, and you find yourself really into it, the trippy visuals, the cool music, and the vibrations of your controller- everything connects and it becomes kind of like a blur. I guess an example of this is that I don't really remember many details of having played it earlier today, it's really weird, like you go into a trance (it's like your brain stops thinking "oh, shoot the things on the left, now the right, now the left again" and you just go.) It's very hard to describe, and I'm not sure everyone gets that feeling, but it's a pretty special game. Do yourself a favor an at least try the demo a few times. It's gotta be right there with Shadow of the Colossus for the most original game I've ever played.

@AZRoboto: Think of it like a vertical shooter, in 3d, with a couple injections of lsd and cool electronic music. I dunno, I suppose its a hit or miss depending on the person. Personally, I love it. After a long weeks worth of classes and homework, nothing like spending the wee hours of the morning taking my "medicine" and playing Rez HD.

I think Miz should work less on games like N3 and let himself get "too artistic" more often. I really liked SC5 1 and 2, loved Rez, and I even think Lumines is pretty cool, though it'd be 20x cooler if you could SAVE PROGRESS...
...His other games? Don't know, never really got into them, though I did play Meteos and E3 too. (And E3 was kinda fun, but I can't really see what part is his having played the E2 on the PC...)
Even if he came out with something all concept and no game like Electroplankton, I think it would be fun.

No infrastructure support for Meteos and Lumines? Meteos 2 turned into a Disney affair and still without infrastructure. Not cool man, not cool. Q entertainment fell a lot of notches because of that.
