Europe Gets Spore Two Days Early

Posted by Luke Plunkett at 11:30 PM on February 13, 2008

That chilly breeze I'm feeling on the back of my neck may just be hell freezing over. While Spore will be released in the US on September 7, EA have announced that the game will be released in Europe on September 5. That's all four versions - PC, Mac, Mobile & DS - as well. Hardly recompense for years of suffering, but it's nice to catch a break sometimes.

American Lost Odyssey Packaging Is An Exercise In Half Measures

Posted by Luke Plunkett at 10:30 PM on February 13, 2008

Lost Odyssey comes on four, count 'em, four discs. Which creates a packaging dilemma for the folks at Xbox HQ. In Asia, the problem was solved by releasing a slightly fatter case, which housed all four discs on two little trays. An elegant solution. But the American version? They cram three discs into a case then stick the fourth in a paper envelope. Not so elegant.

Former Boy Band Singer in Tekken Movie

Posted by Brian Ashcraft at 10:00 PM on February 13, 2008

That long-in-development-hell Tekken lugs closers to the big screen. The movie version has been kicked around Hollywood since 2002 with Sony Pictures' Screen Gems now holding the distribution rights. Back in October, Variety reported that Free Willy 2 director Dwight Little (yeah, we know) would be helming the forthcoming project. Now, apparently it has at least one actor. On the official page of former boy band singer Luke Goss, the adminstrator posted that Goss would be taking on the role of Brit Tekken 4 fighter, Steve Fox. After his band Bros broke up, Goss (above, with twin brother) went on to appear in flicks like Blade II and Hellboy 2. Let's hope the producers can work fringe leather vests, acid washed jeans and keyboard playing into the flick.

Oh, for those not familiar with Bros, hit the jump for a special treat:

Maybe Band Mashups Won't Be So Bad

Posted by Luke Plunkett at 9:30 PM on February 13, 2008

OK, so on first hearing the news, it was real easy to write off THQ's Band Mashups as a cheap, Wii-based Rock Band/GHIII clone. But now that we can see how it actually works...I'm intrigued. In this clip, a metal band and the Mexican band of the undead face off over...Cypress Hill's Insane In The Membrane. Which gets mashed like a potato with milk and butter.

Kosovo Needs A Flag, Dreamcast Logo In The Running

Posted by Luke Plunkett at 8:30 PM on February 13, 2008

Remember Kosovo? Little Serbian province. NATO and Serbia had a little tussle over it in the 90s, and it's now inching nearer to full-blown independence. Which means they need a flag. An international competition to design one was held last year, in which 997 flags were submitted by people all over the world. Of that 997, only three remain in the running: an EU-style flag with a map of Kosovo in the centre, a black, whit and red tricolour and... another black, white and red tricolour. With a strange, yet familiar symbol on it. It's supposedly a Bronze Age icon from the 4th century Dardanian Kingdom. Sega fans will argue otherwise.

Say, Did You Know How Many Wii Games Suck?

Posted by Luke Plunkett at 7:30 PM on February 13, 2008

Next-Gen's Matt Matthews, perhaps the internet's #1 fan of game-related, coloured graphs, has dug through GameRanking's average review scores and discovered something a lot of you could probably have guessed anyways: when you add up all the Wii reviews and average them out, they're a little... awful.

How awful? See above. While every console of the past eight years (sorry Dreamcast) have seen their games average around 69-71%, the average Wii score is only 64%. Which leads to much hypothesising in the piece about reviewers not "understanding" the Wii, theories on the impact of shovelware and how the Wii is short on AAA titles (Madden 07, for example, is still in the top 10-ranked games for the platform).

The full article has a lot more graphs and charts than just that one, so head on over if you'd like to see/read more.

Mizuguchi, Matsuura and Music

Posted by Brian Ashcraft at 5:10 PM on February 13, 2008

Rez creator Tetsuya Mizuguchi and PaRappa the Rapper mastermind Masaya Matsuura are smart guys. They say smart things. This time, they're chatting up music — so essential to their games. Dig this exchange:

Mizuguchi: ...What is music? Music has many elements, so how can we cut and separate and remake the parts in the process of game design? So then, game designers have to know what is fun, what is the essence of music?

Matsuura: Essence of music, I don't know. I really don't understand the essence of music. I've been composing music for thirty years, and I still don't understand what music is. But I'm still looking for the certain shape of my music. Anybody who can define the existence of music, I really respect.

Mizuguchi: Yeah, I agree with you. Music is like a universe -- many, many elements. Lyrics, chords, rhythm, beats, playing, listening. Emotionally, you feel something. When I was 11 years old, I listened to my first Beatles music. I couldn't understand English, but I felt emotion or something, sort of... I want to love somebody! It's the power of music, of chords... very physical things, very emotional things. Not logic -- I don't know, maybe logic. If I understand the lyrics, and it's a new chemistry. Music, we have a long history with music, but new music is coming still. I don't know why. It's a universe. Amazing.

Great stuff. The rest of the dialogue over at Game|Life is worth checking out as well. Do it, you won't be sorry.

BioWare At Work On A New KOTOR

Wondering what that BioWare/Lucasarts project was going to be? Oh, come on. Like you couldn't guess. During EA's analyst report earlier today, it was revealed that in addition to working on more Mass Effect, Dragon Age and a "New MMO", BioWare are also handling a new Knights of the Old Republic title. Which means it's not their upcoming MMO. So, a new, straight-up RPG, then? Probably. Your excitement glands can't repel joy of this magnitude.

Game On Exhibit Will Hit Melbourne In March

Australian Post Posted by Logan Booker at 4:30 PM on February 13, 2008

gameon_cut.jpgEver wanted to check out the most ancient consoles the electronic entertainment industry has to offer? Or perhaps peruse some original artwork by Mario man Shigeru Miyamoto?

Looks like the Australian Centre for Moving Images read your mind. Or, more likely, it's a coincidence.

The dates you'll want to ink in your unicorn journal are March 6 to July 13. That's about 18 weeks of retro gaming paradise. Tickets will set you back $15, or $10 for concession. Families of two adults and two children can cheat the system by purchasing a special $44 ticket. Alternatively, you could keep an eye out for a very special ticket giveaway, coming to a gaming blog* near you.

(*SPOILER: IT'S THIS ONE!)

The only downer? It's in Melbourne. For all you Mexicans out there, I know you're wondering why you should care, but as a Sydneysider I have the right to cry like a big sissy.

That's it we're down to just one more company to book for GDC. I think this show's going to end up being bigger than last year's E3. I'm not sure if that's a good thing or a bad one. New Sony, Ubisoft, Square Enix Trademarks Reveal New Games?

Posted by Michael McWhertor at 2:33 PM on February 13, 2008

Recent filings at the US Patent and Trademark Office may give us some insight into upcoming plans for a number of publishers. While not all filings eventually make it to actual product, there are a few interesting unknowns within. Leading the pack is Capcom's Wolf of the Battlefield which, while unannounced, may be the final name or part of the name of the company's top-down shooter Commando 3.

Sony Computer Entertainment has just registered In The Beginning There Was Darkness, a game we don't believe is based on the book of the same name, chronicling a blind man's life journey while reading the Bible. [Update: As commenter CONFUSEDGAM3R points out, this is part of the God of War: Chains of Olympus ad campaign. Thanks!] Square Enix has two new filings with Sigma Harmonics and My Life As A King, the latter of which may be a spin on the name of its announced WiiWare game.

Finally, it looks like Ubisoft has two new properties in the works, Aftershock and Strike Hawk. Why do both of those instantly sound like Tom Clancy branded games to me? Regardless, the first may simply be the post-earthquake survival game previously known as Alive. Go ahead, speculate!

Big Players To Form PC Gaming Alliance?

Australian Post Posted by Logan Booker at 2:05 PM on February 13, 2008

gdc_logo_left.jpgAccording to the San Jose Mercury News, heavyweights Intel, Microsoft, AMD and NVIDIA will join forces to help fight the decline in PC game sales.

The alliance will be officially announced at this year's Game Developers Conference in San Francisco.

Being a hardcore PC gamer, I'm pleased to hear about this. However, the team will need more than just hardware vendors if it wants to stand a chance. After all, it's the publishers that decide what goes on which platforms these days, and with the popularity of the Xbox 360, Wii and Playstation 3, combined with the large outlay for a decent gaming PC (some video cards cost more than an entire console!), the battle is going to be an uphill one. Sure, Microsoft has its fair share of releases, but a bit of support from EA or Activision Blizzard would go down a treat.

It will be interesting to hear the group's strategies to invigorate the platform.

You may remember the creator's previous work on Multiplayer Asteroids, but if not, don't fret as they bear no relation. All one need do to win a round of Untangle is move the points around until none of the puzzle's lines intersect. It's a fun little diversion that can only be made more complete with the inclusion of a timer, a move counter and a more obvious puzzle reset button (hint hint!). Let us know how far you get.

Resident Evil 5 Going Xbox 360 Only? Capcom Says "No"

Posted by Michael McWhertor at 11:20 AM on February 13, 2008

With the Game Developers Conference just a week away, we're expecting a few megaton bombs to drop, most likely in the form of big shooter announcements and hands-on time with games previously kept away from middling press types. Amid hints from Microsoft that it has one or two reveals still up its corporate sleeve has come chatter that Resident Evil 5 may become an Xbox 360 exclusive. The source? A GameStop listing that shows the title for the 360, but not for its other announced platform, the PlayStation 3. Not much to go on, considering the game has been announced as a multi-platform title months ago, but not out of the realm of possibility.

Curious, we asked Capcom Senior Director of Communications Chris Kramer about the speculation, who responded "Resident Evil 5 is coming for PS3 and 360."

More Skate, Burnout, Mass Effect Coming From EA

Posted by Michael McWhertor at 11:10 AM on February 13, 2008

From the Duh Files comes news that EA plans to ship "extensions" to its financially successfully Skate and Burnout series, by way of EA Games prez Frank Gibeau. He also says that a proper Mass Effect sequel is already in the works. What those extension may be wasn't defined, GameSpot reports, but could easily mean proper sequels or handheld spin-offs. And while downloadable content most likely isn't out of the question, Skate producers have gone on record in the past saying the title wasn't built with DLC in mind.

Another Burnout wouldn't come as a shock to just about anyone, but it would appear that EA is not going to give up trying to unseat the current Madden of skateboarding, Tony Hawk. He told investors "these are the fights that EA knows how to win," which I'm sure has Activision execs losing control of their bowels in fear. You're welcome for the imagery.
