First APB Vids
Posted by Luke Plunkett at 4:30 PM on February 23, 2008
After Mike brought us our first real info and shots of Realtime World's upcoming MMO APB, we've now got the first footage of the game in action. Looks like a nice break from - and alternative for those not interested in - the orcs-n-loot status quo. Above is some cops-n-robbers action, while after the click's a walkthrough of the character customisation utility.

Wow! the character creation is just awesome especially the hair, looks really good.
I hope the 8 player mission cap doesnt ruin the game, but only time will tell.
I for one am gonna be a bad ass criminal with that cool eye scar, never seen scars look that good.

I love mixed genre games like this. Mass Effect mixed RPG and shooting very well so maybe this can mix MMO and shooting very well too. Also this and Champions Online look to be really taking MMOs and expanding them into their full abilities.

Awesome, I played Crackdown for the first time since it basically came out yesterday and took a break to check Kotaku. Low and behold there's APB news, right in the midst of my pondering of, "When are these guys going to make a sequel or another game?"
Can't wait to try this game out, sounds like my kind of MMO.

That is a very bad argument. I want you to pitch a game idea that hasn't been done before right now.
Most games can be broken down into components from other games, no matter how original the idea would seem.

Is it just me, or does this game look like Crackdown minus the cel-shaded graphics??? Not to mention the gameplay which seems to be a fusion of Crackdown/Saint's Row/GTA. It looks like the developers of APB seem to lack something us gamers refer to as "O-R-I-G-I-N-A-L-I-T-Y".

First of all sorry but this is going to be a LONG post...
its mmo for the hub, but the game match makes a set of "criminals" and a set of "cops" based on the levels of each...
like they said on teamxbox, they saw 4 new criinals in white tank tops trying to rob a electronics shop, 1 APB cop showed up, and they thought "hey we out number him we can win" next thing you know their were 4 dead thugs on the floor....
the match making is inside the mmo to even the crimes/criminals out with the cops for each attack.
the customization is frigging AMAZING! 360 and PC better have the same level of customization or people will be pised tho.
"pased on this one" what are you talking about its for he 360 and PC
------
ONCE AGAIN IT'S NOT 8 ON 8 in that sense!!!!!
thats the max size of each CRIME! and that would be 8 newbies vs 8 newbies, the system will auto level, so it might be 8 newbie criminals against 2 APB Masters
also thats the CRIMES!!!!
The world itself is fully MMO, you can walk around you can talk to your gang etc drive around etc... but when you go to your hideout or whatever and plan a crime thats when the system picks the people needed for that mission and thats where the smaller math starts.
-----
as for replayability, people seem to think you'll be robbing electroncs stores stealing tv's all the time. Thats a newbie crime, they already said the crimes will get more complex, probably robbing banks or stealing planes etc who knows the games a year away!
On top of that it also scales because as you get higher leveled, you have to go up against more APB cops or more criminals f your an APB, the real game gets started i suppose when you reach 8 maxed out APB's vs 8 maxed out criminals trying to rob a national bank or something lol

I'm interested in this game. A lot. But if it's not a true MMO, then I'm not sure. I don't want a Guild Wars experience. I really hope they use dedicated servers. Also, doesn't FFXI use dedicated servers? Wouldn't that mean that this could too, and maybe we would get some real MMO gameplay?

Well, obviously, the character creation is very nicely done. I'm more concerned about the re-playability of the gameplay. Honestly, to me, it looks like an online multiplayer version of the vigilante police missions in the GTA games, except you can play as either the police or the criminals. I'm sure it'll be fun initially, but there needs to be a lot more substance shown before I'm impressed.

Dude.
Number 1: This game is coming out on PC and both X360 and PS3 and based on the tiny cursor I see going about the scree, I'd say this build is running off a PC.
Number 2: This game is early. If I'm not mistaken, this is the first time they've even shown the game in motion and I doubt it will even be out before 2009. In other words it's WAY too early to judge the graphics for this thing.

I notice no one is mentioning the serious v-sync issues or the texture pop-in's or the washed out colors? Since I've had my PS3 everyone keeps saying just look out for the great games but I've played this stuff 1 1/2 years ago and it looked better. Sony should quit with the lies and make a game worth playing. Now I know why this PS3 will last ten years, it will take them that long to get the graphics up to what the 360 already is doing.
Really depressed after seeing this.

@Patient:
Yes you can be law enforcement. Why would you want to play as them?
Well why not? It looks like they're just as customizable and the only real difference is that you're trying to stop the crime. I guess the choice would come down to whether you want to be the hunter or the hunted. I'm sure they'll be fun to play.

@Dangeresque: I know Gundam is dirty but I love 00:
I'm guessing it's similar to Guild Wars, but I don't know for sure.
After watching all the videos, My best guess is this:
The world isn't really instanced, at least not like it is in WoW or Guild Wars. I believe the world is like a hub like say WoW until you (or your party) start a mission. I would guess that at that point, it sort of becomes instanced in that there really aren't any other players around UNTIL you actually start the crime and the APB is sent.
At that point, I believe the game basically searches for cop players that are in the general vicinity of the crime in there own games (maybe from the hub world)AND that are of similar rank (I'm guessing this based on the fact that the speaker referred to that moment as the game's matchmaking system). This way, you only face however many cops the game wants you to and determines fair. Also by keeping them out of the "instance" until the crime has started, would keep the cop players from just camping the crime points and other criminal players from messing with you while you do it.
The only thing that sort of throws my theory off is in the video where the cops and robbers get in the car chase. In it, while the cops and robbers are chasing each other, they show another criminal character stealing a TV and watching the whole chase go by. It looked like he was totally uninvolved with the other robbers and thus shouldn't be in the "instance" according to my theory. So basically, it's probably even more complicated than I tried to explain.

Looks amazing.
What though... can you play as law Enforcement as well?
The only thing I am wondering is that if it is a game with two different factions (Cops and Robbers)... what is the incentive to play as the cops?
In the GTA day and age, I'd imagine everyone would want to be a hardened criminal no?

Posted 8:05 PM 3/3/08
Like those before me have said, I don't really see where the "MMO" fits into all of this. I mean, it looks like maybe there's a global, GTA-style main server, and then you get directed to a mirror private server for the actual missions? This would, of course, be much like Guild Wars- one big, universal hub, with the actual quests and action taking place on a private server.
One thing that could potentially be different is that maybe, seeing as they have a very GTA, run and gun style going here, you could just randomly start shooting people in the main server... but that would be chaos, anarchy, and the very definition of newb-unfriendly.
One thing I am sure of is that if this is the extent of the interaction with other players, they'd have to pry a monthly fee from my cold, dead fingers. The only shooter I pay that much for is TF2, as it's the reason I bother with Live.

In one of the vids (I think the 1st one posted a few stories back) The guy mentions that there are 60 of his friends there with him (it's really hard to hear his voice in the vids though). It's the one where the asian guy is trying to get a crowd of people riled up. Apparently all of those people are actual players.
Whether or not this carries into the missions though, I don't know.

@Irenicus-the one and only: also, MMO stands for massivly multiplayer, not massively multiplayer role playing game. You don't need progression for it to be an MMO...
that aside, there IS progression in the game. Upgrading your gear, and pulling off bigger heists/stopping bigger heists.

I like the looks though :) But with these graphics and driving etc. How many can be in the world at the same time? 5k which is basically MMO minimum per server? I doubt it.
Character creation seems very detailed and big, much to costumize, looks good too.

So, correct me if I missed something here, but isn't this just a multiplayer only game essentially the same as games like battlefield or quake wars w/ a GTA twist?
What classifies this as an MMO? If this is an MMO then isn't Halo or Resistance?
The reason I'm concerened is if this is all just one big sever side game are they still going to try to charge something for it?
