Microsoft Kills Xbox 360 HD-DVD Player

Posted by Michael McWhertor at 4:00 PM on February 24, 2008

Let there be no more speculation about Microsoft's stance on HD-DVD. The company issued a statement today that it would no longer manufacture the Xbox 360 add-on following Toshiba's decision to bail out on the high definition disc format. It reiterated that the death of the HD-DVD format would not "have any material impact on the Xbox 360 platform" but it surely scuttles any talk that the Redmond giant has plans for a 360 with a built-in HD-DVD drive. We expect fantastic deals on the accessory and discs to flood Cheap Ass Gamer within hours.

The full statement from Microsoft is just after this, full of digital distribution good wishes and stiff upper lips. Rest in peace, Xbox 360 HD-DVD player.

Mario Kart Wii Show Floor Trailer

Posted by Flynn De Marco at 12:00 PM on February 24, 2008

Here we have another look at the new Mario Kart game for the Wii. We get see a bunch of multiplayer gameplay as well as some people "enjoying" the Wii wheel. Something about that wheel just leaves me scratching my head. Perhaps it's the fact that it's not attached to anything and just seems to be floating there. I think I'll stick to driving my Kart with a good old fashioned controller thank you very much.

Space Invaders Underpants

Posted by Flynn De Marco at 11:00 AM on February 24, 2008

I think that the Space Invaders icons have to be the most used video game symbols in clothing and accessories. We've seen hats, pants, shoes, shirts, man purses, jewelery and all other manner of accoutrement featuring the little pixelated aliens. And now, to complete the entire ensemble we have Space Invaders boxer briefs. These were snapped at Ted Baker in London as evidenced by the label in the box. Someone please make a note to get these for Crecente so he'll finally have that last piece to his museum collection of decorative video game related underpants.

SNK Playmore Suite Visit

Posted by Flynn De Marco at 10:00 AM on February 24, 2008

I got a chance to swing by the SNK Playmore Suite at GDC to check out some of their offerings. Most of what they had going on on their screens were showings of their various game anthologies including Fatal Fury Battle Archives Vol. 2, King of Fighters 98 Ultimate Match, King of Fighters Collection Orochi Saga, Samurai Shodown Anthology, SNK Arcade Classics Vol. 1 and World Heroes Anthology. Not a whole lot new here but there were a couple of nice looking trailers for King of Fighters XII and the New Samurai Shodown.

Conan, The 'B-List,' and the Gaming Industry

Posted by Maggie Greene at 9:30 AM on February 24, 2008

There's a fun article over at the Escapist talking about the B-list in games, film, and other entertainment (looking in particular at Conan, both the original pulp fiction incarnation and the 2007 game from Nihilistic); the author's contention is that game developers don't really 'get' the B-list, and why people turn to B entertainment for, well, entertainment. Of course, video games suffer from the odd conundrum of having too much money; most B entertainment manages decent returns on smaller budgets. But what about the pulp fiction/game divide?

Exclusive: Eternity's Child Creator Attempts to Tackle the Holocaust

Posted by Flynn De Marco at 9:00 AM on February 24, 2008

Luc Bernard, the mind behind the upcoming Wii-Ware title Eternity's Child is already hard at work on a new and what is sure to be a very controversial game or the DS. Imagination Is The Only Escape is the story of a young Jewish boy living in France during the occupation by the Nazis in World War II. In order to escape the horrors around him, he imagines a fantasy land that becomes the basis of the game's world. The adventure platformer will attempt to educate players on the atrocities experienced by many children during the time of the Holocaust.

Shanda Introducing NCsoft's Atrix To China

Posted by Maggie Greene at 8:30 AM on February 24, 2008

NCsoft's Atrix, a casual online game that NCsoft describes as "a lively action fighting game," is making its way to China after being well received in Korea last year. Shanda has gotten the exclusive license to operate Atrix on the Mainland, part of the alliance between the two Asian giants announced this past November. I wonder if having a 'strategic alliance' will preclude any of the messy and protracted legal battles we've seen between Chinese and Korean companies? You can expect the game to be popping up on PRC PCs in 2009; full press release after the jump.

Sorry UK: No Gran Turismo 5 Until 2009

Posted by Flynn De Marco at 8:00 AM on February 24, 2008

Videogamer.com is reporting that an email sent out by retailer GAME indicates that Gran Turismo 5 won't be arriving on UK shelves until 2009. So it looks like all of you hoping to see some GT racing action on your PS3s this year will be sorely out of luck.

"The legendary "Real Driving Simulator" Gran Turismo 5 is heading to PlayStation 3 in 2009, utilising the uber-console's raw horsepower to generate an unrivalled level of realism."

The email goes on to promote the release of Gran Turismo 5 Prologue on March 28th. The "preview" game will feature forty cars, five tracks and will be budget priced at £19.99.

Chinese Game Industry Deals "Paralysed"

Posted by Maggie Greene at 7:30 AM on February 24, 2008

The Chinese game industry is hot hot hot, and money is burning a hole in the pocket of some of the big players like Shanda. Unfortunately, the hot market has led to plenty of companies overvaluing their worth, and despite capital burning a hole in the collective pocket of the big companies, they're starting to realise that snapping up small companies for massive prices isn't the giant payoff they're looking for:

Some LEGO Universe Concept Art

Posted by Flynn De Marco at 7:00 AM on February 24, 2008

After my chat with LEGO's Mark Hanson the other day about the upcoming LEGO Universe MMO, I was promised some concept art. Well the big day has arrived and I awoke this morning to find two nice little images in my mailbox. The email described them as being related to one of the first zones that players will encounter upon starting the game. Not much more info than that but there you have it. Make the jump to check out another shot!

Texas Instruments' Dual View: Look Ma, No Split Screen

Posted by Flynn De Marco at 6:00 AM on February 24, 2008

Late Thursday night I rolled in to Jillian's at the Metreon Center spent and exhausted. A week of running around GDC was beginning to take it's toll, but I was told I had to come check out a special surprise dealing with Texas Instrument's DLP technology. Being a DLP owner myself I decided I'd check out what all the hub-bub was. Turns out it was really quite interesting.

Jonathan Blow On Marketing, 'Lying' to Players, Passage

Posted by Maggie Greene at 5:30 AM on February 24, 2008

Oh, Jonathan Blow. You're so painfully pretentious it would almost be cute if you didn't go zinging so far over the line almost every time you open your mouth publicly. The maker of the forthcoming XBLA title Braid is back with another discussion of his views on the industry, this one really launching off on a new - wait, no, it's the same old, same old. I'm really curious to see the end product of his game, but I could do without the pretentious attitude that reminds me of hipster indie music people. It was fine the first few go rounds, but someone needs a new schtick, pronto:

Double Fusion CEO Shreds His Way To The Top

Posted by Flynn De Marco at 5:00 AM on February 24, 2008

President and CEO of Double Fusion, Jonathan Epstein put all the other GDC rock gods to shame this week at IBM's Guitar Hero Competition. Epstein won the $US 1,500 grand prize with his face melting rendition of Eric Johnson's White Cliffs of Dover. According tho the short press release, you can challenge Epstein to an epic battle of the bands by going to Double Fusion's website. I went there myself and didn't really see a place to sign up per se, but I suppose an email will do nicely. Just don't count on wrestling that $US 1,500 from him. I think the title will be the best you can hope for.

Microsoft Handing Out XNA (And Lots of Other Stuff) To Students

Posted by Maggie Greene at 4:30 AM on February 24, 2008

As I logged into my school email account this past week, only to be greeted with the news that some libraries are way too protective over their microfilm (damn you, Yale!), a little item on the news section of our login page caught my eye. Microsoft is giving away several full-fledged programs to college students, hoping to lure them away from Adobe-powered and open source software; in addition to Visual Studio Professional Edition and Expression Studio, they're also handing out XNA Game Studio 2.0, including a 12 month trial subscription to XNA Creators Club (plus some other stuff). Under the initiative titled 'DreamSpark,' they're hoping to rope in people early on, with the hopes of reaping the financial benefits later.

LEGO Indiana Jones

Posted by Flynn De Marco at 4:00 AM on February 24, 2008

For the last part of my three part coverage of the Lucas Arts presentation, we'll talk a little about LEGO Indiana Jones. The portion we saw dealt with the iconic scenes from the beginning of the first movie: running from giant boulders, stealing golden idol heads and the like. We were also introduced to some of the game mechanics. Indy will of course make much use of his whip to destroy things, grab objects and swing his way through his adventures.

Patapon Launch Trailer

Posted by Flynn De Marco at 3:00 AM on February 24, 2008

Patapon releases next week and having had the privilege of checking it out over the last couple of days, I can tell you it's a really great game. The art style alone is enough to send an artsy guy like me into the stratosphere. If you haven't yet checked out any of the media surrounding this games, be sure to check out this trailer to see what you've been missing. Loco-Roco fans will take to this like a second coming. Great stuff.
