Mario Kart Wheel To Be Sold Separately

Posted by Luke Plunkett at 11:00 PM on February 28, 2008

No no no, Nintendo, you've got this around the wrong way. I don't want to buy Wii Wheels separately. I want to be able to buy the game separately, so I can use the GameCube controls and forget the wheel ever existed. Ah well. For anyone who simply must have two or more Wii Wheels, however (I don't know...maybe your dog needs a new chew-toy), know that Nintendo will be selling them in Japan for ¥1200 ($US 11), and will probably be selling them everywhere else as well.

Europe Gets Two PS3 Bundles (Neither Of Them For MGS4)

Posted by Luke Plunkett at 10:30 PM on February 28, 2008

You could almost hear it the instant news of the US MGS4 bundle hit: "what about Europe?" Well, sorry, Europe, you're not getting it. Instead, you're getting two bundles of your own. The first has been cobbled together to cash in on Blu-Rays recent Format Wars victory, as it offers the home theatre connoisseur a 40GB console and three Blu-Ray movies (Casino Royale, Spiderman 3 & 300). It'll be available on March 19. The other bundle has been cobbled together for the racing fan, and will include a 40GB unit and a copy of Gran Turismo 5 Prologue. It'll be out on March 28. Both will cost €399, which is alright, but both will also include a single Sixaxis controller, which is not alright.

GTA IV Cleared For German Release

Posted by Luke Plunkett at 10:00 PM on February 28, 2008

Germany, it's OK. Despite the USK banning games like they were going out of style throughout 2007, they've managed to see fit to OK Rockstar's Grand Theft Auto IV for release. Sure, it's got itself a retail-unfriendly 18+ rating, but a release is a release. With Australia and now Germany - the West's two toughest nations when it comes to classification - having signed off on the game, Rockstar must be breathing one deep, raspy sigh of relief.

But soon, there'll be a third version: UNSC Spartan John-117. Not the most official piece of Halo merchandise, then, but it's probably the naughtiest.

Metal Gear Solid Re-Release Is A PS2 "Port"

Posted by Luke Plunkett at 8:00 PM on February 28, 2008

Just a little tidying-up work for those interested in the upcoming Metal Gear compendium: the version of Metal Gear Solid that's included will be on a PS2 disc, rather than the original 2 PS1 discs, saving you the headache of both disc-swapping and of trying to dig up an old PS1 memory card. Everything, else, though, is completely unchanged, so don't expect bonus content or updated textures or anything. Smart move, but then, if they're going to go changing one game's media, wouldn't including all three previous games on a single Blu-Ray disc have been even smarter?

Activision Didn't Buy Take-Two Because They Thought They Were Rubbish

Posted by Luke Plunkett at 7:00 PM on February 28, 2008

Think EA were the only big publishers interested in snapping up Take-Two? Nunh-unh. Activision thought about it too. They mulled it over, clicked their tongues, asked a few friends what they thought, then decided against it. Why? Because they eventually decided Take-Two just weren't worth buying. Activision boss Bobby Kotick:

I think we've had - as we've said for a very long time, now - well-stated criteria for what we're interested in in an acquisition.

More (Tiny) MGS4 Box Art

They're small, but you can still make out enough of them to go pop an excitement vessel or seven. Anyway, this is the Japanese Special Edition of Metal Gear Solid 4. In the centre is the box art for the game itself, which of course you can see in better detail here. To the left, the big box the whole lot comes in, and on the right the bonus disc, which has a making-of featurette and some HD trailers.

Where In The World Is Phil Harrison?

Posted by Luke Plunkett at 6:00 PM on February 28, 2008

Phil Harrison's gone. Up and left Sony. Which has us all very, very sad! We loved Phil. Some may say a little too much, but what do they know about love? Nothing. Exactly. So it hurts that since announcing his departure, we haven't heard from Phil. Not a "hi". Not a "hey guys, I'm OK". Nothing. Where are you, Phil? What are you up to? Is everything OK? Because when J left us, we knew where he was going. When Peter left us, we knew where he was going. But you...we don't know. Look, we're just worried about you, OK? Worried about you and the legion of Mini-Phils we cooked up last year. All they do these days is slink around the house, looking mopey, complaining about how Wii Sports stole SingStar's thunder. We need to hear from you, Phil. They need to hear from you.

Sharp, Hitachi Accused Of Price-Fixing Over DS LCD Screens

Posted by Luke Plunkett at 5:00 PM on February 28, 2008

Sharp and Hitachi make the small LCD screens used by Nintendo on the DS. They're also in a bit of trouble! Both companies have been raided by Japan's antitrust regulator, after suspicions were raised that the pair have been involved in price-fixing over the handheld's screens. All very unsurprising, considering the popularity of the handheld and Nintendo's reliance on outside companies for the DS's components. None of the parties involved - Sharp, Hitachi, Nintendo or the regulators - have issued a statement regarding the allegations. If they're found guilty, it'll probably result in a lowering of screen prices and a reduction in costs for Nintendo, but if you think that'll also result in a cheaper DS for you, you're kidding yourself.

Mario Kart Wii Doesn't Even Have Proper Text Chat

Mario Kart Wii doesn't have voice chat. But it's got text chat at least, right? No. It doesn't even have that. Nintendo of America have announced that the game will instead allow players to choose from a limited selection of automated statements/responses while playing the game. "Hello", "I'm sad", etc. I'd say welcome to 1996, Nintendo, but 1996 is still awaiting your arrival.

PlayStation Eye Headtracking Requires Nothing But A Face

Posted by Michael McWhertor at 1:20 PM on February 28, 2008

Programming whiz Thomas Miller of Sony Computer Entertainment America wowed us with his technological alchemy earlier this month, whipping up a cool head tracking demo for the PlayStation 3. But at last week's GDC, Sony was showing a version that simply required a face, no glasses required.

While Home for the PlayStation 3 may have generated plenty of buzz for Sony at last year's Game Developers Conference, its late arrival and the setting in of reality may have made it put a damper on the hype surrounding the service. We've had our doubts that Home may ultimately be nothing more than a prettier Second Life, a glorified 3D chat room, one that only makes getting to the games we actually want to play a bit of a chore. But we've recently learned some very interesting things about how three first-party published games will take advantage of Home's features that have us very excited.

Whenever you play this game, you say you're about to be done and then you play for an hour, and then you get mad because you die.
It's true. The only thing she missed was my persistent perspiration as I await another unavoidable disc read error—probably out of politeness.

PSP2 Concept Is Totally Fugtastic

Posted by Mark Wilson at 6:00 AM on February 28, 2008

The PSP2, at first glance, has absurd analog stick placement, features a screen that juts out from the casing for now reason and looks tactilely synonymous with playing a stale loaf of bread. But as a mod that could play your PS One and PS2 discs on a flawless OLED screen and export hi def video out (along with Dolby), it's completely geektastic. Sure, the designer could have made a sleek device with touch controls, but this unit is sadly size realistic if you imagine what modders will be able to accomplish in a few years when slimmer Blu-ray drives come out (their spec sheet didn't mention Blu-ray, but as long as we're making stuff up, why not?).

Disney Forms Ultimate Band

Posted by Mike Fahey at 5:40 AM on February 28, 2008

With the Wii release of Rock Band hovering off in the distance without a release date, Disney Interactive Studios seeks to fulfill the dreams of Nintendo gamers' rock star fantasies next holiday season with Ultimate Band for the Wii and Nintendo DS. Ultimate band does away with the need for costly peripherals by using the Wii controllers or DS stylus in lieu of musical instruments. The Wii version allows you to play drums, bass, guitar, or even be the front man - which is interesting considering there is no microphone in the Wiimote. Other than the control differences the game sounds just like Rock Band. Your band starts off playing in your garage and works its way up to a huge international arena, unlocking a variety of songs from the "biggest names in rock, alternative, popular, emo and indie rock music" along the way.

A Trip To Lucas Arts Studios

Posted by Flynn De Marco at 5:00 AM on February 28, 2008

At last week's GDC I had the opportunity to go out to Lucas Arts studios to check out a few of their upcoming games including Star Wars: The Force Unleashed, LEGO Indiana Jones and their new IP Fracture. Lucas arts is somewhere I've been wanting to see for quite some time and luckily I was able to snap of a few pics before they hustled us into the theater to watch the demos. I didn't get as many as I would like, but I at least got the Star Wars items that were placed around the bookshelf lined lobby. There were large, luridly colored old horror movie posters and a large statue dedicated to the creator of King Kong, Willis O'Brien. These, unfortunately, I didn't have time to take any photos of as our time in the reception lobby was rather brief, but I did manage to get a great shot of the Yoda fountain out front (above) and the actual costumes for Darth Vader and Boba Fett, which you can see after the jump. If I ever get the chance to get out there again, I'll be sure to hide in the bathroom so I can sneak out and document the whole place before I get dragged away kicking and screaming by the Imperial Guards.

Chris Taylor - Secure PC Gaming Is The Future

Posted by Mike Fahey at 4:20 AM on February 28, 2008

If PC gaming is to survive, the old ways must die. So says Gas Powered Games boss Chris Taylor, who believes that rampant piracy will kill the industry unless a move is made towards secure games - games hosted on a server that require player authentication in order to play. In fact, Taylor says that such a move could not only save PC gaming, but potentially lower prices all around.

"It inconveniences a little but now they know why. And then we can get the economics back in line and maybe we can actually start offering it up at a lower price point in the future. So it will come around full circle"
The man has a valid point. PC game piracy is one of the most prevalent types, mainly because it is the easiest - just download and go. I've often wondered how PC developers felt knowing that the moment the game they worked so hard on hit store shelves it would be up on the internet for free. What do you think? A bit of hassle in exchange for a healthier industry and the potential for lower prices in the long run? Certainly sounds fair to me.

Secure PC gaming could bring prices down - Taylor

Study Shows Gamers Enjoy Hurting Themselves

Posted by Mike Fahey at 3:20 AM on February 28, 2008

Yes, it's yet another violent video game study, this time performed by researchers in Helsinki Finland, which at this point has a population made up of at least 75% science researchers. The study, "The Psychophysiology of James Bond: Phasic Emotional Responses to Violent Video Game Events", recorded data from a group of 36 young adults while playing James Bond 007: NightFire. In direct opposition of several other of what I've at this point labeled "Choose Your Own Conclusion" studies, the students were found to display negative brain response to the death or wounding of their enemies, while oddly enough they displayed positive response to their own character being killed. In the course of studying a non-violent game for comparisons, the researchers found similar responses when players fell off the ledge in Super Monkey Ball. So does this mean all gamers are masochists?

360 Catches The Deadliest Catch

Posted by Mike Fahey at 2:40 AM on February 28, 2008

In all of the Metal Gear Solid 4 excitement yesterday, we missed out on what could be the most important game of the year. The Discovery Channel presents Deadliest Catch Alaskan Storm, a game for the Xbox 360 and PC that promises to bring the perilous world of the Bering Sea crab boat captain to your living room. Developed by Liquid Dragon Studios, DCAS is the brainchild of brothers Sig, Edgar, and Norman Hansen, who have been a big part of the Discovery Channel's hit show. The game touts 34,000 miles of the Bearing Sea coast recreated from the US Geological Survey, weather patterns based on authentic data, and some really big f***ing waves.

With waves over 40 feet high, "Deadliest Catch Alaskan Storm" features the best wave effects in a video game to date. In the words of Captain Sig Hansen, "It may not be life or death, but chills went up my spine the first time I saw the Northwestern sink in the game."

EA Not Ruling Out Hostile Takeover Of Take-Two

Posted by Luke Plunkett at 1:20 AM on February 28, 2008

Cash money didn't work, flattery isn't working, maybe it's time for something a little more...drastic. Citing "sources", the New York Post reckon that EA could forget about buying Take-Two the nice way, and instead do what current boss Strauss Zelnick did when he took power: make kissy-faces with Take-Two's largest investors and convince them it's time for a change. When asked whether a hostile takeover was indeed an option for EA, the company's Chief Financial Officer Warren Jenson reiterated what EA's CEO told us on Saturday "We're keeping all options open", while industry analysts keeping tabs on the whole affair reckon that shareholders will vote in favour of the sale, while at the same time voting against Zelnick and co.'s controversial payrise plan.
