FFVII On NES Is A Triumph Of The Human Spirit
Posted by Luke Plunkett at 8:30 PM on February 25, 2008
A little while ago, the Shenzhen Nanjing Technology Company released Final Fantasy VII. On the NES. Totally unofficially, of course, but also totally, officially awesome. Sure, the game eschews Chocobo racing, limit breaks and even Yuffie and Vincent, but this being a NES cart, casualties are to be expected. What does make it in there are the other six characters and almost the entire main storyline of the multi-disc PlayStation epic, an achievement I have no hesitation in labelling Herculean. Since you'll never own nor play this, you can check out some screens here, with well over 100 more at the link below.

This is madness! Not sparta, just MAAAAD-NES.
I'd really like to see how the game goes... I mean, compressing a 3 CD game to one measly NES cartridge?

@ArmyofJuan: No, graphics was not the best reason FF7 was so popular. The materia system, two optional characters, minigames/sidequests, awesome and long story, thousands of hours of replayability. The replayability was partly thanks to dialogs being different depending on who's in your party, aside from the obviously many good ways to set-up your materia.

It is, and I think I posted a picture or two. They cut out the make-up and bikini briefs, but the old guy still makes Cloud a dress, and Tifa still freaks when she sees him.

This is nice, I mean, this is a labor of LOVE. Pure, unadulterated LOVE!
Not even my intense ennui concerning FFVII could shield me from the blind adoration this person must have had for the game! Bravo, some Chinese guys over on the mainland, BRAVO!
Hell, if the crossdressing minigame is still in there, I'm so playing this just to get that sprite!

There is something the reviewer missed as well. The character portraits are all ripped from the SD Gundam G Generation games.
[cinnamonpirate.com] - is Delaz from Gundam 0083. It appears to be his Wonderswan sprite.
[cinnamonpirate.com] - Domon Kashu from G Gundam with a recoloured jacket.
[cinnamonpirate.com] - Olba Frost from Gundam X.
[cinnamonpirate.com] - Shaki from V Gundam.
[cinnamonpirate.com] - OMG NO WAY MAN! Quattro Bagina, also known as Char Aznable, the most famous man in anime history!
[cinnamonpirate.com] - Possibly a Yazan Gabel sprite edit.
Either way, all the character sprites are ripped and recolours from else where. These are the only ones I can pick out for sure.

How is it that despite my posting multiple screenshots with Red XIII, people are still posting that he is not in the game ...? The whole Cosmo Canyon quest is there. I even posted a picture of his stoned father. I just do not use Red XIII in battle because I am not a furry.
Also, I would like to correct a typo in my earlier post. For the record, the game is Chu Liuxiang, not Chi Liuxiang. It is based on the Gu Long novel.

I'm a bit surprised they didn't go multi-cartridge with this project, both for the novelty and to recreate that disk swapping feeling. Still, nice idea, love to see funny stuff like this.

No Red XIII... no Vincent... no Yuffie...
... well, there goes my whole party. :/
Yeah, a nice effort I suppose, but the omissions kinda kill it for me. They had to lose the musical scores from VII too? No limit breaks, no chocobo racing, etc, etc.
Yeah... I understand the whole "casualties will exist" bit... but damn. Yeah, yeah... Aeris dies, Cloud wasn't in Soldier... I prefer the full experience, thank you. It's one thing to gain the charm of an old NES RPG and pull off all they did... but to lose half the soul of the game in the process... bummer.

You know, looking through the screenshots, some of the characters looked... Familiar... I thought I saw Ramba Ral and... Wouldn't you know it... Quattro Bejina proves it. The portraits are lifted from Super Robot Wars. :p I'd say probably from one of the NES or GB or even Wonderswan versions... Except... I have a sneaking suspicion Cloud is being played by Kira Yamato here... And he didn't exist when SRW was on those platforms. Curious..

You know, it's funny. Way back when the Gameboy Color came out games that had been either Playstation or Sega Exclusive suddenly started turning up with GBC versions, I wonder if Square might suddenly return to Nintendo with a GBC FF7 port or something. It was laughable, I know, but I could see it working. You know, dump the FMV and polygons, make CG sprites like in DKC, cut a ton of color out of the original game's pre-rendered backgrounds, and you'd be in business! And now... THIS. This might be fun to play. XD

Although I'm not a fan of FF7, I still have to say I'm really impressed by this knockoff effort. It's really amazing how they managed to recreate the game for the NES (granted, they "cheated" a bit by using larger memory chips than ever used on an official game).

Asbestos_Underwear:
(Why do I feel so stupid typing your name?) It is fairly common practice in the Chinese Famicom scene to slap together a label using popular artwork for another game. I have Langrisser cartridges with artwork for Wind Fantasy III and other big PC titles. I would say you are lucky it even uses the Advent Children logo. There is an alternate version of this cart with a different title screen that appears to be a hack of this pirate cart by another pirate cart producer.
When you get into how the Chinese FC scene works, this stuff is really common. Often Chinese dumpers have no idea if the cart they are dumping is real or not. For example, the dump of Menghuan is a known bootleg of Chi Liuxiang, which (as far as I know) remains undumped. The question is, is the Chi Liuxiang version actually produced by Waixing Toys, or did that company rip it off another source?
Getting to the origin of these games is like unraveling a ball of rubber bands. As far as I know, this one is pretty straightforward. It is also easy to believe Shenzhen NanJing is the maker, as it produced multiple Famicom games in-house -- some original and some hacked. Its carts are also branded with the company logo seen in the top right. Pirates of pirates rarely sport such branding.
I am suspicious this game was made as recent as Advent Children, because new FC games are at a trickle here on the mainland. It is possible this cart is a reissue and they updated the artwork: either that or it was produced when Advent Children first entered development, and it ripped off an early release of the logo.
Hope this helps. If you have any more questions, post them here or at my article. I'll try to answer as best I can.

You ever think that since FFVII was like one of the first, maybe only polygonal RPG on the playstation at the time, that THATS why so so mega popular? I mean i love that game to death as it was one of my first forrays into RPG-dom and i didnt even play it when it first came out. I watched my friends uber otaku sister play it but i was just mesmerized and captivated by everything going on. It looked just so beautifull at the time.
Or maybe this is a generally accepted answer and reason and im just late to the party.
