GameSpot Loses One More Editor
Posted by Michael McWhertor at 8:40 AM on February 5, 2008
Ryan Davis, an associate editor, experienced reviewer and nearly 8-year GameSpot veteran, has become the latest to quit in the wake of former editorial director Jeff Gerstmann's termination. GameDaily.biz reports today that it has confirmed with new GameSpot editor in chief Ricardo Torres that Davis will follow Frank Provo and Alex Navarro as the latest casualty to the site's editorial staff. News of the most recent resignation comes two months to the day that we warned of a mass walkout at the CNet Networks owned site.
Gerstmann and Davis appeared to have been close cohorts, with the pair performing as the musical outfit Suburban All-Stars. Davis wrote in his GameSpot blog within days of Gerstmann's firing that "I would not be in the video game business at all were it not for Jeff Gerstmann," adding that the controversial termination "absolutely breaks my heart" and signaled "the end of an era for both GameSpot and myself."

Ryan Davis was a great editor. I always enjoyed his presence in On the Spot. I have only the best wishes for him, and I hope he finds greener pastures within the gaming industry.
That said, Gamespot is royally f*@ked

@Witzbold: Thats very true. It fits the more American nature I'd say. I find the same thing annoying with the EGM reviews actually.
Still I think thats a good point. The game is proven to be a hit in Japan. So it's deemed a great game by default. To a niche though, thats exactly it. Getting a reviewer that falls into that niche is going to be difficult. Once they do - Monster Hunter will finally be given a fair review. The IGN Monster Hunter Freedom aren't to bad, actually.
Still- I'm getting all to tired of the "I say punchy/ cleaver insults about *blank* game I'm reviewing - rather than tell you anything about the game itself" review format. I feel it's become all to popular in today's game publications. (At least in the US anyway. I can't speak for anywhere else.)

@Niric: I actually read that too. Its rather unfortunate since so few reviewers actually give that game a chance. Granted it is a bit of a niche title that eats up time like crazy, still though. We the gaming public do kinda want a bit more "objective" reviews.

I hate to sound like this - but I'm actually glad to hear this reviewer is leaving. Namely for the terrible, sorry excuse of a review, he gave Monster Hunter and Monster Hunter Freedom.
His review of Monster Hunter and Monster Hunter Freedom, are literally cut and pasted from each other. Who would value a reviewer that would post such effortless review material? Thats right... *Cut and pasting* the body of the review and re-writing some of the words. Reminds me of middle school book report material techniques.

I cancelled my subscription once I was convinced that Gerstmanns firing was at least partly due to his review of Kane and Lynch. I think it's a little extreme to say I'll never go back - it's still a decent place to leech bandwidth for a large demo or patch download and the community is pretty cool, but it's no longer the "must visit" site it once was.

With all the talk about honest gaming journalism, non-advert-sell-out stories, it makes one think..."why doesn't Kotaku spin off a review section?" I'm sure Kotaku fans would give a good amount of support to you guys for doing so, as well as your notoriety within the community, this idea wouldn't be so bad. Perhaps this is a plan in the works, seems only natural to me for a site that is already doing gaming news, to start out a gaming review section. Doesn't your sister site Gizmodo do hardware/gadget reviews? Am I totally coming from left field here?

At first I had a bit of doubt that he really was fired for the review, well at least recognition of the possibility, but the more people leave the more I'm convinced corruption did occur.
People constantly quiting like this also keeps the issue in the public eye, which is nothing but a good thing. I know personally I've refused to visit their site prefering instead to visit Gamespy or IGN. If the rumor are true that Gerstman really is starting up his own site I'm going to make it my gaming destination.

Makes me wonder if that gaming site supposedly rumored to be launched by former GameSpot owner (before it's incorporation and buyout) and Gerstmann is true.
With all his old cohorts coming back out, it'd make for a huge publicity stunt and promotion for the new site just by their names themselves.

Niric
Posted 3:04 PM 5/2/08
@Witzbold: Indeed. As with some of the best games I've ever played, the learning curve is huge on Monster Hunter. Exactly why a quick, first impressions reviews they all keep giving it, will never do.
Likewise, this isn't Monster Hunter's problem alone. I'm sure there's several other games subject to this issue.
Which brings us to another good topic. I personally find the reader reviews give the better, down-to-earth, opinions. If I listen to anything review wise, (which is still pretty mild in itself.) is the reader reviews/comments.

@Niric: One thing though in Japan its gone beyond niche as you can see with the sales numbers of over 1,000,000.
Im guessing the reviewers in the US just dont have as much time to fit the game into their schedules so they just write the very, very first impressions they get from the first hour or so of playing. Which I can see why they would view the game poorly.

@Witzbold: The hammer, her justice is swift. Her keeper, his aim is true. You'd think they would learn, but no... they still line up to make the same tired cracks.
Here's a tip from the veterans (read: those that kept their heads low enough to not get shot at), kids: fat and gay jokes get you banned. Don't know how you didn't see that before, but there you have it. Racism, sexism, threats of violence against other readers, and other fun no-no's meet the hammer as well. Trolling and "first's" too. When in doubt, read the comments ahead of you and see who fell at the hands of the hammer... and for safety sake, don't follow in their path. It's really quite simple.
Now repeat after me: I will not act like a tool. I will not act like a tool. I will not act like a tool...
Practice makes perfect.

You've got to wonder if the top brass over at CNET isn't ecstatic over all these old-school reviewers leaving. It will make room for younger, more impressionable minds for them to corrupt early on before they can form things like 'editorial integrity" or "moral values".
