Harvest The Thunder
Posted by Mike Fahey at 2:20 AM on February 12, 2008
Well the comments from last week's VC Update were overwhelmingly in favor of continuing, and that's probably a good thing as this week sees the release of one of the hardest to find titles for the original SNES. Harvest Moon sows its seeds on the Wii Virtual Console this week, with 800 Wii Points worth of raising animals, growing crops, and luring unsuspecting country girls into an ultimately loveless marriage where you sit around playing Lords of Thunder all day long while she sits in the barn crying for her lost youth. What's Lords of Thunder? Why it's this week's second VC release. A TurboGrafx CD side-scrolling shooter (800 Points), LoT casts you as a legendary warrior taking on six stages of combat in order to stop the resurrection of Zaggart: "The Dark One" to the dulcet sounds of the best in gaming metal. Raising livestock and blazing guitar rock - it seems like last Monday was not a good day to die.
WII-KLY UPDATE: TWO NEW CLASSIC GAMES ADDED TO WII SHOP CHANNELFeb. 11, 2008
The two games joining the lineup this week are considered cult classics, yet they deal with topics as varied as farm management and shooting enemies to the strains of heavy-metal tunes. Just don't get the two mixed up, since most livestock don't like heavy metal and it takes more than turnips to defeat fire-spewing sea serpents.
Nintendo adds new games to the Wii Shop Channel at 9 a.m. Pacific time every Monday. Wii owners with a high-speed Internet connection can redeem Wii Points to download the games. Wii Points can be purchased in the Wii Shop Channel or at retail outlets. This week's new games are:
Harvest Moon (Super NES, 1 player, Rated E for Everyone, 800 Wii Points): You bought the farm, so now it's time to roll up your sleeves and try living off the fat of the land. Fresh air and the beauty of the outdoors will be fulfilling, but a successful farm needs a lot of working capital as well. There are buildings on your property, but they are in need of livestock. You have a modest house, but if things get lonely in the field, it's going to take a remodel to woo a female farming companion. Your challenge is to dig in and build your life as a farmer from the ground up. How you manage will determine the outcome, but remember: You always reap what you sow.
Lords of Thunder (TurboGrafx-16 CD-ROM, 1 player, Rated E for Everyone Fantasy Violence, 800 Wii Points): Lords of Thunder is a side-scrolling shooter that has you take on the role of a legendary warrior, blasting enemies to heavy-metal tunes. Your enemies are plotting to revive Zaggart, "The Dark One," who was sealed beneath the six continents of Mistral. It's up to Landis, descendant of the heroic Dyu, to stop them. Choose the order in which to attack the six stages. Before each stage, select one of four magic armors and use crystals you've collected during your battles to buy items. Selecting the right armor for each stage is the key to your ultimate victory. Then get ready to face awesome enemies like a fire-spewing sea serpent or a giant insect. Whether it's the fast-paced shooting or breaking into the fortress of a stage boss, you'll be blown away by the intensity of Lords of Thunder.

Harvest Moon, no thanks. Lasyt time I played a simulation game I spent almost every day playing it for about seven months. That game was Animal Crossing: Wild World for the DS.

I've had my TG-16 since it was new. Got it for Christmas back in the day. But the CD add on was just a dream because of price. I want all the VC TG-CD games I can get now.
Harvest Moon?... meh...

This is the first Harvest Moon game that kicked off my obsession. I must have rented it at least 10 times, but never purchased it. And then the N64 came and out went SNES rentals. Oh well! Now I can play to my heart's content.

@antialias02: I want the U.S. release of Final Fantasy III. Because I want to play it again, and my SNES is 2400 miles away goddammit! And I don't feel like playing it on the Game Boy Advance or DS or whatever it was recently remade for.
Hey, side question, that game called "Final Fantasty II" for the PSP, is that the real Final Fantasy II, or the United States SNES Final Fantasy II?

='] I'm so glad you continued doing these, I don't check the VC half as much as I should like, and Harvest moon is one of my favorite gaming franchises!
Can't wait to play this!
...now if only the UK Nintendo site could have the Wii points in stock to exchange for all those stars I've got sitting round...

My head was swirling and I almost fainted upon reading the headline.
Then I realized they only re-released the SNES version, not the 64 version, which is my only favorite Harvest Moon game.

@Trowble (XBL/PSN): It's the best of all the versions in my opinion, next would be the first one that was on gameboy, then n64.

The best Harvest Moon ever made, then again I only played 2 (Harvet Moon 64) out of the 100 sequels for the game. The latter versions seemed too uninspiring to me.
As shown in my avatar, cow humping should have been a feature in all the series, funny stuff.

@baked ham: Not playing any harvest moon likely explains why you never understood the appeal. HM and MMOs are really built the way that gamers have been trained to value: short-term goals leading to tangible rewards. They've just condensed it to a ridiculous level.
HM is different, however, in that it actually has a vague semblance of a story, and has some interesting NPC social stuff going on. It's still mostly planting crops to get money to plant more crops to get money to get better tools to plant even more crops.
It sounds ridiculous, but it's great fun once you give it a shot.

@baked ham: You can pick up a used GBA one on the cheap or try this one as well.
It's something akin to Katamari. You can't really explain how it's fun (because a fun Farming Sim defies explanation), but it doesn't change the fact that it actually IS fun.
Sure, in game years I usually restart or whatnot after 5 years or so, but I still pick up every new iteration. The original was great, but the newer ones have so much more to keep you entertained.
Try one. Trust me. Good times had by all.

@Dreamwriter: Uh, yeah, I don't think you could say that anything that was exclusive to Turbo CD or Sega CD was "popular". Maybe amongst owners of those systems, but those systems are both obscure. Not too many genesis owners had the CD addon, and even fewer TG owners had the CD addon. I mean, Sonic CD is in my opinion the best Sonic game ever made, but it's something of a cult classic, too. How many could've possibly played it, considering the unpopularity of the CD add-on itself?

@Dreamwriter: The Genesis release was weaksauce and barely anyone had a TG-16 CD or TurboDuo. That's one reason it can be seen as a cult classic.

I don't get it, Lords of Thunder wasn't a "cult classic". It was a damn popular game on both Turbografx-16 and Genesis. Maybe Nintendo considers it a cult classic because it wasn't on any Nintendo systems? :)

Wow, FINALLY a good week. Lords of Thunder? Hell yes, one of the best shooters and prime reason to own a TurboDuo, along with Gates. Remember well people, the SNES Harvest Moon is unforgiving and missing a lot of stuff you've gotten used to. Getting married is also a bitch and a half.
I'll have to wait for HM64, the SNES version was great, but it's a little too hard to go back in time that far.
