Indiana Jones And The Screenshots Of Lego
Posted by Mike Fahey at 3:40 AM on February 12, 2008
Back in 1981 when my mother took me to see the first Indiana Jones movie, Raiders of the Lost Ark, I sat rapt for nearly two hours - no small feat for a hyperactive 8 year old - entranced by the action, tickled by the wit, and just completely absorbed by the story. The reason I bring that up now is that these screens from Lego Indiana Jones look like the original movie as seen through the eyes of a hyperactive 8 year old. Just a thought that struck me. Game is looking pretty good, isn't it?

I was really upset when I heard they had canceled this game. Oh sure they're making a game CALLED Lego Indiana Jones, but it's not and never will be Indiana Jones. Indiana Jones without Nazis is Star Wars without Stormtroopers.

@Witzbold:
That would have to be one very odd reason, as Temple is treated like the redheaded stepchild of Indiana Jones movies. Heck, Speilberg even campaigned to get what would eventually become the PG-13 rating because of this, his very own movie!
@shadow_judge:
The three Raiders and one Crusade set have been available for maybe a month in the US, depending on exactly where you live. Elsewhere, it'll probably take some time before the first wave starts to show up.
@Karlott:
You can get one in the $10 motorcycle chase set from Last Crusade, which is, incidentally, the least expensive set so far (though the tent set from Crystal Skull _might_ come in at the same price)

@Purple Dave: I really gotta watch temple of doom again though, since that was my favorite one for some odd reason. Maybe its because its one that had games made after it too from the arcade to nes versions. ;D
Though I dont think anyone who saw raiders of the lost ark can forget the end scene though. Talked about burned into ones mind!

@SigmundTheSeaMonster:
You know, a brick in this instance might actually be more useful than that new whip. With a brick, you could at least clip it to the edge of the pit so it forms a short plank that you can get a running start off of (if Indy was able to jump the entire gap, imagine how much easier life would have been if he'd been able to shorten it a few studs...er, I mean feet). The whip was something I was eagerly awaiting, in the hopes that they'd also release it in black, so I could give Catwoman a better whip than the ages-old "black vine looped back on itself", which looks so much more like a long-handled riding crop. Then I got the first sets. It's a friggen coil, and it's thick enough that you can't really straighten it out at all (though if you can, it does a pretty good job of hoisting Indy up a full floor's height all on its own...). I think I might need to cave and just use a short string with studs on both ends and one of those nifty new black lightsaber hilts that they used as the barrel on the Jeep-looking-thing's gun. I do have to say this for the new whip. It looks pretty funny stuck in the top of Indy's father's hat, and you can actually hook the outer loop into part of the pillar structure in the Well of Souls such that you can position him to look like he's about to kick one of the Anubis statues over. Plus there's always that sweet TIE Steam...

I really, really fail to grasp why the LEGO games environments aren't made out of Lego Bricks. Indy is made from lego, the crocodile and the boulder are made from Lego, so why are the surroundings (as ecurtz says) just some generic royalty-free "jungle theme" ???
When first playing Lego SW I expected to be able to build anything I wanted by just picking up bricks here and there. Maybe that was too much to ask, but now it's just a generic kid's game that has a Lego design slapped on at the last minute.
I agree it looks cool, but it's not really Lego.

@Witzbold:
See, you should have explained it away as getting confused between the first movie by release, and the first movie by chronological order (I keep them on my DVD shelf as YIJC1, YIJC2, Temple, Raiders, Crusade).
@GOLD5:
I believe this will make Harrison Ford the only person to be portrayed as two completely different characters in any LEGO video games. Alfred Molina loses out in that they passed up their chance to do a LEGO Spiderman game before their deal with Sony got cut short (so this will be his first appearance). I suppose you can sorta count Temura Morrison, on the fact that _technically_ he's Jango Fett, Boba Fett (voice only), and every Clone Trooper in the Clones/Sith segments...but that still feels like cheating in my book. And Joker doesn't count either since, even though the look is clearly biased towards the B:TAS version, that series (and TNBA after it) isn't covered by the license.
@jollydwarf:
They can definitely get four versions of Indy in there. Indy like the minifigs, Indy with no leather jacket (but never without the hat), "Bond, Indy Bond" with a tuxedo a la Club Obi-Wan, and Professor Jones in a regular suit. But yeah, Short Round is the only real "short" character, there aren't any Jedi or droids, noone should have super-jump, so that leaves basic gun-toting heroes, pseudo-Nazis (like the Imperial trait in LSW, though they'll probably term it Soldiers or somesuch), natives, swordmen, and maybe they'll include the ability to wield an automatic rifle instead of a pistol.
@denki:
It's not Lucasarts that de-Nazid this. It's just a LEGO thing, where they don't make accurate representations of real-life military troops. The only two instances I know of where sets included both military-based designs from _ANY_ historical period, and the proper emblems to go with them were when LEGO Direct released, as Shop@Home exclusives, a UCS-scale Sopwith Camel and Red Baron's triplane (can't for the life of me remember what the actual airplane model was called. And if the LEGO sets don't have Nazi-fied Nazis, the game based on them shouldn't either.
As for the golden idol, I'll definitely have to check the real brick version...
@SnakeCL:
It's there. It's just yellow, shiny, and flat, so you can't see it. Really.

I just watched that movie yesterday, and because they, being Lucasarts, are making everything as non-offensive as possible, they've already removed one fo the funniest things from the movie- the little bitty golden ass of that idol up there. Sure, it doesn't really fit with the whole Lego theme, but still, it would have been great to at least keep some of the movie in the game. I hear instead of Nazi's you fight Ewoks with handy-talkies.

The only thing I'm 'worried' about with this particular Lego game is the lack of potential unlockable characters with distinct powers that give the player incentive to go back through the levels in "Free Play" mode. I'm sure you'll get to play as Short Round, maybe Henry Jones, Marion (shrugs), possibly (why?) "Tuxedo Indiana" or Professor Jones, but who else? Sallah? Mola Ram? Han Solo? Jack Ryan? Dan Akroyd?? (Look it up.)
The Star Wars games were perfect for this, the Batman game will offer plenty of replay opportunity, but this one seems inherently more limited, unless they make a dozen different 'Indianas' and bring in some characters outside of the movies.
Actually...maybe the dog??

You and I are the same age, 1973, baby! Yea! I loved the crap out of that movie as well, though it would take me several more years to realize that Han Solo, and Indy were played by the same actor. The first movie was sooo much better than the other two, yet it seems as though most people aren't as likely to have seen it. (They sure have trouble naming it because it wasn't called "Indiana Jones: Raiders of the Lost Ark") I sure as F^%$& knew what the F*&%# Nazis were at that age though. This move sounds just like how certain countries went unnamed in COD4, recently. Maybe they just don't want to be sued by Nazis for copyright infringement. A funny side-story, one time, I wrote on Major Nelson's blog that one of the commenters was a comment Nazi, and it took like 15 minutes for my post to get on there, and then the word Nazi was taken out, so my sentence made less sense without the noun. Haha, I wonder if they took it off personally or if there's a script for that. Glad they aren't... NAZIS about it here or we couldn't talk about this, huh?

@kylenalepa:
Expect them to look like the official minifigs where possible. That's how they did it with Star Wars, except they gave you options for a bunch of characters that never got released as minifigs.
@Livid:
The what now? Oh, you mean the studs! You don't _need_ to collect them. They're just for buying extras if you want characters that aren't otherwise available, special cheats, or what-have-you, a lot of which isn't even available for use during Story Mode runs. If you only want a few specific characters, you should pick up a decent chunk of what you need just through regular play.
@KeFkA666:
Alright, I'm gonna try to explain this one _again_. The LEGO Company has NEVER made historically accurate uniformed troops. In the pirate sets the "British" redcoats flew these flags. The "French" bluecoats flew these flags. And the "American Union" troops from the Cowboys sets flew this flag. What possible twisted logic results in thinking that the Nazi troops should get unprecedented special treatment in being the first historical military force to be accurately represented in official LEGO sets, which are made in a country that the Nazis invaded? The LEGO sets didn't have swastikas, the game based on the LEGO sets won't have swastikas (and if it does, don't expect to see many more games coming out of the TTG camp). They will both have Nazi soldiers...they just won't be sporting any German WW2-era emblems or flags.

You'll have to forgive him. He also thought there were Nazis in all three films.

Anyway, I can live without the Nazis thing. It wasn't the fact that the bad guys were Nazis, it was their character that was singular, like Toht and Belloq. They were just Nazis because that made an easy bad guy. Besides, they'll probably still LOOK like Nazis, just without swastikas. Heck, it's not like the LEGO characters ever say anything, so it's not like they'll be saying "Heil Evil-land" or anything.

@Irenicus-the one and only: Honestly, all it would take is a short, simple explanation along the lines of "Nazis were a political party that took over Germany in the 1930's etc., etc...."
Any child too young to even understand that doesn't really need to hear anything from their parents beyond "Nazis and swastikas are bad".
"...anyway if you would only play this game because of Nazis then you should not even think about playing it in the first place."
Considering that Nazi's and Nazi sympathizers are the only antagonists in two of the (currently) three films, cutting them out is a little like say...removing the Confederacy from an American Civil War game for the sake of cultural sensitivity.

I agree with those who say the game loses something with the exclusion of Nazis. It'd be one thing if this were based on an original story, but seeing as how it draws its inspiration from the film the decision is pretty ridiculous.
And forget just saying "any kid who's seen the films...". Any kid who's seen certain episodes of the Simpsons, South Park, or whose grade school history curriculum isn't a product of suburban guilt should be familiar with Nazis.
And I'm sure somewhere out there is a TV station still rerunning episodes of Hogan's Heroes.
The point is, it's an odd omission that begs the question of just who or what the developers are trying to be sensitive to.

I also want to play games with younger members of my family without having to answer a kid what it is or means, I also do not want to see it on Lego when playing a game, it would not be "cute". I can also respect a company not doing it from Denmark with a game aimed at the younger audience. Just wait until kids paint Lego with nazi stuff in kindergarten and parents getting a call from the social services, anyway if you would only play this game because of Nazis then you should not even think about playing it in the first place.

The Star Wars games are pretty good, but I agree that picking up coins is sorta tedious. And overall the game is a little simplistic - I'd prefer to see more depth in the puzzles, personally. There's so much potential there with the Lego theme that I think they need to exploit, and Indiana Jones really lends itself to that sort of gaming.
