iTunes Offers Rock Band Soundtrack
Posted by Flynn De Marco at 10:31 AM on February 18, 2008
The powers that be over at iTunes have decided to cash in on the Rock Band cash cow. They have compiled all the songs used in Rock Band into one place on the iTunes store allowing you to download all your favorites to your hearts content. If you want all of them though it's going to cost you a pretty penny. At US$ 0.99 a song the whole catalog will set you back $US 73.26.
[Thanks, Jordan]

Just do it the quasi-legal way and borrow all the cd's from the library and rip all the songs on your hard drive.

It takes a special level of retardation to think that you'd get a discount on this. Buy 70 tracks from iTunes, pay $70 - why should you get a free ride because you're buying in bulk?
Seriously, gamers are a bunch of cheapskates at the best of times.

To the people who can't find it: There are three windows at the top of the iTunes Store that change every minute or so. One of those windows turns out to be a link to the "Music from Rock Band" playlist. I don't yet know how else to get there though...

@Witzbold: Yeah the GHIII controllers are compatible with Rock Band on the 360. They will be releasing Rock Band guitars for the PS3/360 in April. Yeah region locking is BS...from a company standpoint I suppose it's understandable, since every respective region wants to make their own profit.

Just what I was hoping for!
Having less money to play games!
Why not just let us have the music we have already payed for? Oh I get it you guys want us to keep spending all of our money, and then blame us for rampant music, and software piracy. When there is trouble turn on the consumers, right?

@y2kenjination: Yeah was thinking about that. Cept it means Id have to buy more guitars and what not. Since I already have the GHIII one on the 360 which works with the 360 version right?
In anycase fuck regioning with games. Its such an old way of thinking. As long as folks are buying the game you make $$$. You make more $$$ when people buy the DLC online. I really hate the way how some companies and their related parties think.

Holy crap people. All these songs were already on the iTunes music store. All they've done is write a list pointing to the songs that happens to correspond with the tracklisting in Rock Band.
If you wanted to buy all the songs before, it would have cost the same as it does now. This is perhaps the biggest non-issue in the history of non-issues.

Apple takes 34 cents from every 99 cents but they run the site and administer the sales. I pay for CD's mostly because I listen to independent artist that should be payed for their music. Also it's 99 cents a song I can afford it.

@oblivionatm: Or honest enough...
To the guy above regarding iTunes charges, I'm sure they do take an ungodly amount out of the $1, but anywhere you buy music that will be true. The studios also take a giant cut and the artists are left with very little. However, thats still better than piracy. Imagine how you would feel if your work was stolen and you didn't receive anything for it.
In the end, there are plenty of things wrong with the music industry, but none of them justify piracy.

If you're only picking 2, pick My Iron Lung and Creep. If you want the whole set, instead buy the entire Radiohead collection off there for like 80% of the price (I think...)

what a ripoff. If I'm going to pay for music, it's either something obscure or something I can get on vinyl. If I own the actual game, in effect, I already payed for the music, therefor, I feel no guilt acquiring the tracks by other means. Yes I realize it's still illegal, but I'm a broke ass who is pinching pennies to get items that I care more about, such as video games. In summary, I would not buy this, but I actually don't care enough to get it illegally either. If I like this music, I would rather play it in the game.

I know this is off topic but my gf pointed to a site or a blog saying that apple takes like 90cents and leaves the artists with 9 cents per song and now they are argueing that them getting a measly 9 cents is still too much as its apple who is doing all the work of putting the album art together with the song and whatnot. Anyone know if this is true? if it is then doesnt it seem pretty usless if you want to support music so you buy thru itunes?

Also, know that not all the songs in the game are on there. A few are missing. It's just a compilation of all of the songs that are already on iTunes. Really actually, it isn't really anything different than what you could've done before on iTunes, it's just all official-like now.

@LightStriker: I don't pirate games, ever, nor music if there is another feasible option (I say that because there are a few Japanese songs which are literally impossible to import). And I always make sure the original artists get their money.
I wasn't encouraging piracy, just pointing out that it seemed like the Rock Band creators were, especially with that pricetag being higher than the game itself. That's all.

I don't think anyone's seriously gonna pay the $73. They're going to cherrypick their favorite songs, to pick some they wanna take with them on the go.
When iTunes does mixes like this, they aren't honestly expecting people to pay the full price -- it's just a convenient way to pool together similar tracks into one selection list, so you don't have to search all over the store for the songs you want.
I've bought a number of songs for Rock Band. Many of them I got off iTunes, prior to getting the game, so I could get familiar with songs like Suffragette City, and learn the lyrics inside out. It was very handy and some of these songs still are on heavy rotation on the 'ol iPod.

downloading albums is way to easy.
go to google.
type the album name.
also type rar.
then look for a rapidshare. or megaupload link..
and baam.
somebody uploaded that album.
and you can download it.
way to easy.
i don't mess with Torrents anymore.
or Limewire or anything like that.
this is all i do.
google search. album name. rar files.
simple as 1 2 3.
:-) then of course if the album is wonderful and i want to help the band i'd go and buy the cd..

That seems counterintuitive. They put them on iTunes probably is an attempt to avoid piracy. But to charge almost $75 for the soundtrack? That's just going to encourage piracy.
Imagine 2 people playing Rock Band:
Person A: "Hey, this game actually has some pretty good music."
Person B: "Yeah, these songs are awesome. So awesome, in fact, I think I may just buy the soundtrack."
Person B goes to the internet, and finds the soundtrack on sale on iTunes.
B: "Hmm.... 99 cents per song, eh?"
A: "Yeah, that's standard iTunes price for any song on iTunes."
B: "Wait, hold on a second... 'Buy all songs, $73.26?!' No freakin' way am I paying that much, I don't care how awesome the songs are! Besides, I already paid for the songs in the game, why should I have to pay for them again?"
A: "Well, you could always pirate them illegally. They have sites just for that."
B: "Don't those kinds of sites tend to have all kinds of viruses and stuff?"
A: "Not always, man, you just have to know where to look."
Person A takes Person B to music download site.
B: "Thanks, man. I can't believe they charged that much... I'm all about supporting the artists, but that's just plain ridiculous!"
A: "No problem. There's more where that came from, too."
A software pirate is born.
Granted, there's not much that can be done, considering how strict iTunes is about their 99-cent song download charge, but it still seems like it encourages piracy.

@Rajio: it seems that the first platform to do it will take a huge step forward in the rhythm game war (setting aside everything else). i imagine it is probably somewhat costly too for the publishers because since the songs themselves are sort of "kept" inside the game, usability of the song is lower than if it were bought off itunes (where you can burn it to a cd, listen to it at work, play it at a party, etc.) i would imagine the music companies would want to tack-on an additional $xxx per song on the game if ea/mtv wanted a audio CD solution as an add-on in which case may potentially bloat the price by $.99 times the number of songs in the setlist.
that's just my guess.

well you don't have to get the whole package. at the very least, it provides a sort of central place for rock band players to look for if they're already itunes shoppers and wanted to grab some songs they liked from the game. i'm assuming the covers are replaced with the original recording listing?
at least i for one grabbed foreplay/long time and i never have a day driving to work without that song playing at least once since. lol.
