Jim Ward Depature Sparks DICE Shuffle
Posted by Brian Crecente at 4:00 AM on February 5, 2008
When we broke the news of Jim Ward quitting LucasArts last week, I mentioned that he would no longer be speaking at the DICE conference this week.
The folks at Kohnke weren't able to tell me who would be taking his place, but today when I hopped onto the DICE site I see he is no longer listed and that there have been a number of changes to the line-up. It looks like Oddworld's Lorne Lanning is also no longer speaking at the conference and that folks from Namco and Massive Black have been added.
Hit the jump for the before and afters, according to the DICE schedule. (Thanks to GameLife, which ran the old schedule last week and made it possible for me to do some comparisons.)

I saw Jason Manley from Massive Black speak at AnimFX in Wellington this past fall. He was one one of the few highlights from that conference. That was a good choice for DICE. I don't have a clue about the others.

That particular Lorne Lanning session would have been really interesting and probably very useful to the community of developers. Last I heard he was approaching the idea of new IPs being created with complete control in the hands of developers rather than publishers, even going so far as to have game developers control the rights for transition to other media.
Basically, their newest project is an IP designed from the ground up to be completely self-controlled in all ways, and designed to be applicable to the strengths of each without sacrificing integrity and quality in any of them.
Could be tremendously cool if they succeed with it as a way to break from the monotony of poor quality licensed IP properties if people can develop IPs made to suit all the targets rather than just port crap at the end.

@Brian Crecente: Haha, I ment that in a joking manner. Like he timed it so that he messed up DICE.

Seems the original topics would have been more interesting. I would not doubt at all the 'implementing creativity' from EA.
Kind of a joke, kind of sad.

You think a minor reason he resigned was just to mess with DICE? Maybe that's just me.
