LEGO Indiana Jones Live Gameplay at GDC
Posted by Brian Crecente at 10:24 AM on February 7, 2008

We just leaned that LucasArts will be hosting an event at their Presidio campus during the Game Developers Conference to show off some of the cool tech behind Star Wars: The Force Unleashed and Fracture and... gasp... let us catch a glimpse of some live gameplay from LEGO Indiana Jones: The Original Adventures.
I am as giddy as a school girl about that game, and I'm not kidding. I actually look longingly at the new Indie LEGO kits every time I see them in stores. I've been trying very hard to kick my son of his LEGO Star Wars habit, just so I have an excuse to by them. So want.

@Mr. SiThNiNjA: Probably because there isn't a Superman movie coming out for the next while ;). Not sure when the sequel to Returns is coming out...
Anyways, can't wait to see Toht in Lego form! Here's hoping he has his awesome coat hanger with him!

@Bernard McGraw:
I'm glad you managed to skip your Dark Age! That's fantastic.
The only issue I would have with a LOTR LEGO line would be how specialized I think it would look. The movie trilogy was so stylized that I think the minifigs and certain bricks would be overdone and look out of place. Plus, I prefer the traditional yellow minifigs, so the new Castle line suits me just fine.

@Mr. SiThNiNjA: After you said that I thought of a lego lex luther losing his hair like it just popping off his head. That image is so hilarious this game must be made. You have made a beliver out of me.

@Deadeyereborn: I think that the Lego platform can make up for all the other crappy Superman games. Being able to fly though walls and have them break down into Lego bits or melt plastic enemies with heat vision.... think about it.....

Before I discovered social circles in which collecting toys well into ones teenagerhood isn't such a big deal, I always felt pressured to grow out of Lego. This happened a few times in the past and every time that thought crossed my mind, Lego would produce something that would make me come to my senses and realise that there's really no good reason to grow out of it. When I was starting secondary school it was the Star Wars range, and then when I started college, Batman. Now I'm hitting nineteen on Saturday and just last week I bought one of the new Indiana Jones sets. Life is good.

Is this coming out before the "realistic" Indiana Jones game that was announced long ahead of this one? Is that one cancelled? They had gameplay video back at the last real E3(2006).

This was bad news too me. Was hoping hey´d have all the movies in this one game. Oh well I guess Lucasarts want as much money as possible from the good Dr. Jones. "Lego Indiana Jones the Complete adventures" here we come.

@Purple Dave: I thought Returns did pretty well? Even if it wasn't great, it was basically one big tribute to the old movies and made the big mistake of following their plot.
If they made a new one in the next couple years, maybe learned from their mistakes and made it good, they'd make a profit easy. Superman is virtually the most iconic Western fictional character of the 20th century after all.

Oh, the Indiana Jones sets are great. The Temple Escape in particular is a work of passion, with every last booby trap having been incorporated in some fashion or another. My only complaint is that there's only one Last Crusade set, and it seems like it was mostly just an excuse to slip in a Henry Sr. minifig.
@Deadeyereborn:
Both. LIJ has the benefit that you get to kill Nazis. With LEGO bricks. That's the sort of fun you just can't buy (not yet, anyways). LB has a big advantage in that it's completely open-ended. They don't have to follow a pre-written plot, which means it'll be a 100% new experience, _and_ they don't have to worry about running out of story material. LB2 could include a few new villains if they come up with any that they aren't already planning to use, but other than that all they'd need to do is have the major villains break out of Arkham and come up with new scenarios for their encounters (hmm, gee, that sounds not entirely unlike what they do with the various comic book series...).
@homernoy:
LEGO Batman is coming to PS2, PS3, DS, Wii, PC, XBL, and 360. Until told otherwise, assume that LIJ will follow suit as they're expected to be released within half a year of each other.
@homernoy:
They have a very good relationship with the PC market, though not quite to the same extent as Lucasarts during the glory days. Aside from a few GBA-exclusive titles (generally BIONICLE and alternate versions of the first two LSWs), most of the titles they've either developed or licensed have been released on PC.
@MrBionic & Mr. SiThNiNjA:
No licenses. LotR is easy to guess. They're still technically under the Harry Potter license (though they've been limiting the offerings with the last two movies), they've just revived their own original Castle IP (and much better than just about anything from the pre-HP days, except Ninja and the Robin Hood guys), getting a license has got to be prohibitively expensive (there was a company that was producing really detailed custom designs...until their license got yanked in favor of whoever started churning out crap for the movie-branded stuff), and the story is a bit more violent than the sort of thing that The LEGO Company had traditionally dealt with until very recently. They weren't prepped to acquire the license when it went on the market, and they'd have a much harder time making their money back now, given that each of the movies has already seen _four_ DVD releases.
@Bernard McGraw:
Go find a local LEGO Users Group if you'd like some help in validating your hobby. My dad once forbade me to buy the Forestman's River Crossing with _my_own_money_ because I had "outgrown" toys. Now both of my parents sometimes pay to get into shows where my LUG is displaying.
@Shevek:
I can't remember who I got the idea from (someone on Brickshelf), but careful work with a plain yellow Sharpie marker does wonders, as you can see with some of my Batman minifigs. In particular, check out Poison Ivy, who has a recolored fleshie head/torso, and regular yellow arms/hands.
@GordieHoweHatTrick:
After how Returns did, I wouldn't anticipate seeing one at all.
