Lost Planet Colonies Rears Its Head Again
Posted by Michael McWhertor at 10:13 AM on February 6, 2008
Capcom's Lost Planet Colonies, trademarked by the publisher last Spring, has just been rated by the ESRB with a T rating for the Xbox 360 and PC. That's right, PlayStation 3 owners, you may have to settle for the port of the former 360 exclusive for the time being. Even though Capcom has made no definitive announcements about a follow up to the original Lost Planet: Extreme Condition, execs have said "there will be more on Lost Planet for sure."
When contacted for comment, Capcom reps simply replied "Stay Tuned." Well, to be perfectly precise, they replied "stay_tuned.jpg." With GDC and a Capcom Gamers Day coming soon, we won't be surprised when Capcom announces something about Colonies.

I've been disappointed with the Capcom's recent works, I will get this one on PC, just like I got lost planet, it looked a lot better than the 360 version.

rofl at half these comments about PS3
with things like "so much more potential"
since the PS3 is weaker in every area apart from storage that means it has less than the 360 apart from as a media device... games wise its not to good although you really shouldn't care about this game the first wasent exactly groundbreaking so its not much of a loss, would be nice if capcom got there head around making multiplayer fun there really not to good at that

@n/a: Yeah, the last stage was nasty. But at the same time, I didn't realize how much trouble I was having with the Gears Of War controls until I was fighting General RAAM at the end. I thought that was way worse. I was sticking to everything in sight firing blindly into the air like a freaking idiot. I swear to God it tool me like 30 tries. Way worse for me than Lost Planet. ;)

@Witzbold: Worst controls ever? I'm starting to feel like that crown should go to Assassin's Creed. I love the game, but damn those controls! Damn them all to hell! Every time I quit playing it for a day or two it's like I have to re-learn the whole scheme again.

Gotta agree with Witz. I also do not understand all the hate Lost Planet gets. I throroughly enjoyed it, and I have pretty high standards. Guess there was something there that just rubbed people the wrong way, but what? Plenty of people are bagging on it, but no one is saying specifically why... It wasn't Bioshock but it sure as hell wasn't Kane & Lynch...

You know I still never understood all the hate for LP. The world and graphical presentation of the game itself was so damned well done.
Sure the story had more cheese than a calzone but shit the graphics and monster design was just awesome. Not to mention the boss fights, except for the goddamned last one. WORST CONTROLS EVER, so its ok if you folks hate on that part. I sure as hell did.

@maximus9: You're assuming that EA has the ability to predict console sales well. They had to cut a lot of jobs last year b/c they didn't predict console sales well. You may want to rethink who you're relying on. Capcom also would not want to release a sequel so close to the original coming out on the PS3. They may not want to release it at all for PS3 if the original doesn't perform well. Just looking at the quality of games, I'd trust Capcom to know what they're doing much more than I would trust EA.

for those wondering about the quality of the PC version of the original, it sucked. Capcom is notorious for being one of the most inept companies when it comes to porting console games to the Windows platform. Most of their problem centers around performance and control issues.

@maximus9: Problem is that this game is geared towards the US. I dont think the first game sold well outside the US but correct me if Im wrong. It might be that they still havent worked out the issues of programming for the PS3 and that this game will see a PS3 release eventually (like the first one). Were the PS3 gamers really missing this series (as of now I guess) anyways?

@Stormrider: A) That's because the Xbox has/had its biggest installed base in the US.
The same is not true for PS3 which has a broader spread across territories and by the time this game is released, the PS3 globally will have as big of an installed as the 360 or close to it. A forward looking business perspective takes into account global potential and releases on both platforms.

Did Capcom miss the forecasts for PS3 from EA this year? Or the fact that its outselling the Box in most territories globally except for the US? Either this is a lame oversight on their part, or sheer stupidity. You choose.

The controls did not suck, they were fine for me and felt right for controlling a living creature. I think there was a learning curve for a lot of people, especially hardcore oldschool console players.
LAIR was, for me, a far more enjoyable experience than Lost Planet was(from what I played of it). I, personally, have no interest in a LP sequel, unless they drastically change the core of the gameplay, but if others like it the way it is, more fun for them.

"Honest question for you though (since you have all three). Why did you get a 360 if you had a PC?
/really, I'm not being facetious or trying to be a dick, I'm genuinely curious. "
Reasons:
1. There are titles that will never go to PC. (Eternal Sonata, Ace Combat 6, Blue Dragon Lost Odyssey)
2. Xbox 360 gets titles much earlier than PC. (Gears of War is a good example. Halo 3 hasn't even been announced for PC same with Grand Theft Auto IV)
3. I own a PC due to exclusives it has that won't come to console (more than likely). (Starcraft II, WoW, Counterstrike: Source)
If you have the money to spend, why not own all the platforms?

Yeah, the Wii will have plenty of exclusives which is the only reason that I bought it. It's getting mostly PS2 ports and minigames for now, but there will be some games that take advantage of the control sceheme and can't easily be ported (if at all)... eventually.
But from what I'm seeing the 360 and PS3 don't really have any exclusives that appeal to me, and most of the great titles are available for $10 less on PC.
Also, Super Paper Mario is horrible. :(

@smitty1123: Just thought I'd add this if you want another perspective on why some people choose 360 over PS3.
Some games play much better on consoles than PC, especially splitscreen / multiplayer games when you don't play online. So even some games are for the PC aswell I would choose the 360 version.
Some of my reasons for getting a 360 instead of a PS3 is mainly, the controller. I like the 360 controller a lot more than the PS3 one.
Most PS3 exclusives doesn't interest me that much like MGS4.. (there's one big exception though, LBP).
And finally the price difference.
This doesn't mean I'll never get a PS3 though.
Oh and for me, the 360 would be worth it just for Ridge Racer 6 :P I'm actually not kidding, I've had so much fun with that game.

If this game were to be PC and Xbox 360 exclusive wouldn't Capcom be contradicting themselves? If I remember correctly when Devil May Cry 4 went multi-platform and some fans of Sony lashed out at Capcom didn't they come up with the excuse of we are going to be a multi-platform company going forward. They've already contradicted themselves once with Monster Hunters 3 going to be exclusive on the Wii. Wouldn't this be Capcom contradicting themselves one more time. I wonder how much hate they'll get from Sony fans if a new Lost planet game is exclusive to the Xbox 360 and the PC? It'll be interesting to see how this plays out

The single primary reason I have a 360 is because the 360 (and it's older brother) tend to get the BioWare RPGs first. Knights of the Old Republic, Jade Empire, and now Mass Effect have all been XBox babies for at least 6 months before hitting PC. Plus there's non-rootkit BioShock, and Halo 3 for when I feel like mindless shooting.
PS3's library of exclusives doesn't include a single game I give a damn about. FFXII underwhelmed me enough that not even FFXIII is enough to tempt me to shell out the bucks.
Considering the /huge/ amount of use I got out of my PS2, it's pretty sad that the anemic XBox RPG library is a more interesting offering than what Sony has these days.
Sabrel
