Love Is A Procedurally-Generated MMO
Posted by Luke Plunkett at 8:30 PM on February 26, 2008
This is Love. Love is different. It's a little bit FPS, it's a little bit MMO, it's a little bit adventure game. The basic deal is as follows: it's an online game, which you play in small groups, and it's hoped those small groups will band together as they work through and explore the game world. Sounds OK so far, so here's the kick: the game world is procedurally-generated. It's highly ambitious, and also incredibly beautiful (that shot above is a screen), doubly so when you find out it's all the work of one guy: Eskil Steenberg. You can check out Love's progress at the site below.

I'm very excited about this game. There's a more detailed preview in Edge magazine. What's really interesting is the fact that the world will change on it's own, for example, a player may build a town, and over a few days it will grow by itself, and even turn into ruins over time.
Or the fact that an enemy fortress may take more than one session to destroy, and it won't just respawn for the next player 30 seconds later. You'll really be able to leave your mark on the world, something missing in so many MMOs *cough*WOW*cough*

Looks like I an "mmo" that could be worth paying for month to month.
Thanks Eskil for all your hard work. I'll keep an eye on this, it looks like my kind of game.

I'm speechless. This thing - created by ONE MAN? Awesome.
The graphics look fun...not that I have got a hold of the concept of the game yet but...we'll see. : D

It does have some very, very beautiful screenshots, i think.
But sure, we'll be getting more and more procedural content in the future. Sounds and most textures won't be benefitting from it in a long time, but things such as animations and various physics breathe life and a sense of interaction in the world, a life that I've been wanting for a long time.
But some textures are procedural in todays mainstream games... I'm sure I remember one of the creators of Area 51 (lul) saying that the rain splash-texture was procedurally created, and that's an area where it fits.
But a procedurally generated MMO? One-man project? Did I really wake up today?

Procedural generation is awesome. Non-photorealistic rendering is pretty sweet. I'm skeptical of whether a one-man MMO is feasible, but I'll keep an eye on this one. It certainly looks like nothing else I've ever seen.

Thank you all for the very kind words! it really makes me want to come home quicker to get back to coding (Im still in SF for GDC and then i will be heading to NYC before i get back home)
Being compared to games like Another world is really the best thing that can be said about a game (although I'm not sure i live up to that just yet). Thank you so very much.
A little bit about the technology: Yes it is procedural in part, but also the game is completely dynamic, so the players can deform the world, (similarly to in "Fracture", but with some more features like tunneling), But also the game can modify the world by generating new dungeons or letting AI enemies build fortifications or cities. Also a large part of the technology is the ability to hand draw very small peaces of geometry that the algorithms can use to build the world with. This means that you can do a fair amount of art direction withe at the same time you don't have to spend a lot of time applying the art direction to a detailed world.

@otakucode: Actually, the programmer has a lot of work to do, just with the coding. And although you need not create ultra-detailed textures you have to generate algorithms that do. The real advantage of procedural code is in application size.
For example, KKrieger (94KB?), which someone mentioned before, had no textures nor models stored, but instead ran at load time the scripts which applied all filters/tools a graphic designer would use to edit the in-game textures (thus, having to generate the macros for each graphic of the game).
In the case of Love, it looks like it will be automatically generated, but a lot of work should go into testing that environments are playable.

@mr_dimsum: MMOs are usually designed to run on old PCs as well as new, so shooting for photorealism usually doesn't work, the games end up looking like they're failing at what they're trying to do. One of the best ways to overcome this is with styles that demand less of the hardware. WoW is sorta cartoony instead or realistic, for instance. I think this will work and has the potential to stay looking "good" for longer.
@Highlander Wolf: Do you understand what procedurally generated means? Why would you need more than 1 person? The computer does all the design.

This looks... marvelous. Painterly rendering doesn't get nearly enough use, and a procedurally generated MMO is a fantastic idea. I'd love to know more about the technical side behind the procedurally generated portion. Just what is generated and what it static? Textures? Quests? Maps? Items? Does it adapt to the playerbase as they themselves grow through character development? Can this game be played solo or are you forced into groups?

This looks like a moving Van Gogh! I'm astonished that Spore will be the first big-budget procedural game, when you've had programs like Kkrieger for 4 YEARS! Can't wait to try this.

The graphics remind me of Another world/Out of this world's hand-drawn backgrounds. And Another world NEVER gets old.
But "it's not love, it's not love, it's not love that I'm feeling". I bit of an itch I can't scratch in my stomach, but not love. Yet.

This is so awesome. I'm loving these new types of MMOs. I'm fucking sick of the grind fests that dominate the MMO market. I want an MMO where I spend thousands of hours playing it because it's fun, not because I need to to level up. Let me level myself up, not my character!

@monorailcat: It basically means that the content is generated by an algorithm, a human only designs the process for the generation itself and not the final result.

You can't complain about EA churning out 'technically' finished games without a hint of soul and then get all uppity about a spelling misstake obviously written by someone who's English is a second language.

Love the style, but something tells me a game that looks like this will get old fast. I'm usuaully an advocate for form > function for things such as cellular phones and such, but for gaming.. That's definitely something that has never worked before.
Here's hoping the style doesn't become a hindrance.
