Magic: The Gathering Coming To XBLA
Posted by Mike Fahey at 10:15 AM on February 19, 2008
Back in December Wizards of the Coast announced a partnership with Stainless Games for an unannounced downloadable game on an unannounced platform, and while I called it with Magic: The Gathering for Xbox Live Arcade, it really was to much of a no-brainer for me to feel all uppity about. While still remaining characteristically vague, WotC has announced plans to extend the M:tG franchise, with Stainless doing a game for Xbox Live Arcade and PC and Mind Control Software doing one for the PC and Mac.
"We're excited to bring the Magic brand to new platforms and give our fans new ways to experience this great property," said Jared Gustafson, Brand Director for Magic: The Gathering at Wizards of the Coast. As to what exactly the games are going to be...well that's anyone's guess, though I am leaning strongly towards card, and not a rehash of the crappy Xbox title Magic: The Gathering - Battlegrounds.
WIZARDS OF THE COAST EXTENDS ITS MAGIC: THE GATHERING IP TO MULTIPLE PLATFORMS Industry Leading Partnerships Enhance Strategy Fantasy Gaming Options for all GamersRENTON, Wash.--February 18, 2008 -- Wizards of the Coast (WotC), the leader in strategy hobby collectible trading card, board and role playing games, and a subsidiary of Hasbro, Inc. (NYSE: HAS), today announced its plans to extend the Magic: The Gathering® franchise to gamers on Microsoft's Xbox 360 Xbox LIVE® Arcade and the PC through partnerships with Stainless Games, Ltd. and Mind Control Software, Inc. Stainless Games will develop a game using the Magic: The Gathering IP for both Xbox LIVE Arcade and the PC, while Mind Control will develop a game for the PC and Mac.
"We're excited to bring the Magic brand to new platforms and give our fans new ways to experience this great property," said Jared Gustafson, Brand Director for Magic: The Gathering at Wizards of the Coast. "It's partnerships like these that will advance the strategy games category and transform it to meet the needs and desires of today's digital gamers."
Magic: The Gathering, introduced in 1993, is the premier and original trading card game that inspired an entirely new game genre. Combining the dynamics of a card game with the excitement of trading and collecting, MagicTM offers fun for casual play, as well as the option of highly competitive tournaments. Magic: The Gathering currently has a thriving online edition (Magic Online®) made up of more than 350,000 active accounts. The game allows gamers to collect and trade virtual cards, build the perfect deck, get help from mentors, find opponents at all skill levels, and compete for prizes every day without ever leaving the comforts of home.
Specific details on the games Stainless Games and Mind Control will develop using the Magic: The Gathering IP will be announced at a later date.

@Dennen: I think the only real big problem with the whole 'Using Magic cards like the Eye of Judgement' would be what to do with all those cards. EoJ has what, 110 in the first set? Every Magic set has somewhere from 160-300+ cards. How many would be supported? What kind of difficulty would it be for supporting those cards for the digital game? How would you support deckbuilding with the physical cards without someone cheating the system (if we're talking like this is MGO)?

I am with Tehdiplomat on this one. I really liked the PC game that Microprose created back in the 90's. And something of a similar style for the XBLA would be a great match.
On the other hand, I see a lot of talk about The Eye of Judgement. I think such a thing could be applied to already released cards. All is needed is a retail software package with the ability to read these codes, already existant cards, and a system that allows you to purchase specific card sleeves from the retailer featuring barcodes of that card... Thus, you order sleeve for Shivan Dragon which will have the data on the sleeve itself. It arrives, you slide your Shivan Dragon into the sleeve. Place the completed item under the camera and playmat and voila. Eye of Judgement style gameplay online and on your console.

@Gypsie: lol indeed that is true, they would have more toughness, but that all comes down to whether or not the aether flash is played before or after, or for that matter how many copies are in play. also the fact that it can hit them still because it doesnt target them specifically is important also. [end nerdly magic rant XD ]
anyways yea fae can be awesome, and cheap in both senses of the word =P unless im messing around i try to avoid using cheap decks against people, or being as i cant find many people to play with, not using them against my cousin since hes still some what of a nüb to the game[ end nerd ish rant]
besides i like to build decks that play mind games with everyone invovled XD

@Eothein: Well I'm just looking at it from the basis of the cards themselves. I can't say I've played the Eye CCG itself, but would it be something anyone would play with just the cards itself? Are there any big card gamers that can compare the two? I suppose if it is a decent game, it would be based more on personal preference at that point.
Also, taking the Simpsons license out of a Simpsons game is irrelevant. The game would probably suck either way and play just as bad. ;p

I'm not a card game connoisseur by any means but I would like to see if this title can lucratively address the misstep I think Eye of Judgment made when they went with physical cards as a way to facilitate the gimmick of the Eye Toy. I think it was cool tech but it really felt like the concept of a virtual card game was being limited by physical cards.

"Beyond the card game, the Magic IP is a largely untapped wealth of fantasy with stories begging to be told. These products are a part of our strategy to start doing just that."

These games are not going to be the card game. The wording of the press release makes it clear that this is an extension of the Magic franchise, not a port of the game.

@CrimzinD: technically in mtgo, you are paying for the actuall cards as well, as they allow you to trade in your digital copies of the cards for the actual cards, whole thing with that is the cards you choose to be sent to you will no longer exist in the game but eh , at least it doesnt make the purchases totally no worth it

Definitely looking forward to this and was hoping the original vague announcement meant it was coming soon. Been a good few years since I played the actual card game but definitely enjoyed.
Those interested should definitely also check-out Culdcept Saga. There is a demo on Live. It is basically Magic: The Gathering meets Monopoly. The game isn't a graphic sophisticated, but the cards have great artwork and the game is very enjoyable.

@Eothein: Eh. It's more about the name than anything really. Magic is the granddaddy of the CCG, and people who remember playing Magic or who always wanted to, might be convinced to check it out. Sure, Eye of Judgment is cool and all, but the game was built around that concept. Magic, as that says up there, has been around since '93. If you took away Judgment's neat little camera effects and virtual battlefield stuff, would you still have a fun, deep game with just cards alone?
Of course, the reason I quit playing is because of the pricetag, and that most the random people I ever met to play with at local places could do nothing but talk about the damn game.

The microtransactions market works pretty well with handheld cards. The kids love it, and love showing each other their pokemons, magic cards, epic wang of leetness and whatever. Problem is, this way they will never be able to show off their newly won/bought/stolen cards. As I have understood it, the social aspect is an important pillar in this specific corner in the castle of geekdom.
However, should they manage to create an interface for sharing, trading and bragging about ones cards, a lobby of sorts, this could very well be the foundation of a pile of money that would eventually touch the moon.
