Metal Gear Solid: Essential Collection Now Available for Pre-Order at GameStop
Posted by Flynn De Marco at 5:00 AM on February 3, 2008
Last weekend I told you about the Metal Gear Solid: Essential Collection and its availability for pre-order on PlayAsia. Now it seems the pre-order is coming stateside as Gamestop/EB Games now has a page for the collection as well. Listed at $US 29.99, it is a bit cheaper than the $US 34.90 that PlayAsia was charging and I imagine the shipping will be a similar 4 - 5 bucks depending on where you are. The collection includes the original Metal Gear Solid as well as the directors cut of Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance and Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence and will be available for the PS2.

I am going to give the series one more shot...maybe if I play it from the beginning I will enjoy it. (I despised MGS 2 (the one on the Xbox)...silly story, bland graphics, and well, splintercell just did it all better.
Oh, and I am a new PS3 (80gb) owner as of Friday. And my HDD crapped out and Sony is sending me a coffin. Yes, within 12 hours, it died. My 360? Had it since launch. Hmm.
I did like what I saw of it though...

@KeroseneClimax: MGO on PO also got hit hard by hackers and such. They fixed it up with PO+ but I really have no idea if hackers got to that one eventually too.

@sascha23:
MGS3 doesn't work right on the PS3 80GB either, it locks up and the cut scenes have choppy video and audio. In fact sometimes the audio cuts out altogether.

@Atilla_the_Nun:
You had YEARS to play these games on your PS2. No excuse really. Pony up 100 to get a slim, it's essentially like spending the extra 100 on the 80GB except it's one small extra harware to have, and it plays 100% of games. Fair trade-off to me.

@Sollus, @Nitroid: Nitroid's right. The term "director's cut" is a little misleading, because it just refers to Substance and Subsistence being the enhanced reissues of MGS2 and MGS3, respectively. If you already have Substance and Subsistence, there won't be any new content on those discs.

Guys, I hate to break it to some of you, but the cover art shown above is a fan mock-up. It's safe to say, however, that the final version will probably be definitively more awesome. Now if only it came with MG1, MG2, MPO, and the latest Metal Gear Saga DVD (although if this is Subsistence, MG1 and MG2 might be in the mix anyway).
Also, the whole "director's cut" bit is probably just a mistake on Play-Asia's part, as Substance and Subsistence are director's cuts of MGS2 and MGS3 respectively anyway. Too bad Integral wasn't thrown in for good measure, though.

@SolidOni_ds: Yeah, MGO was fun. Too bad glitching, Stat boosters and Lag switchers helped contribute to it's eventual demise in the States. MGO2 on PS3 looks awesome, but I hope Konami takes better precautions to help keep out those who screw up an otherwise great experience.

Love Metal Gear, but I'm passing on this. I was one of those certifiable people who bought both the original and enhanced version of each game upon release. This is one of the rare franchises I've done that with and I have no regrets. Still, it's a good deal for anyone who wants to give this series a shot (Unfortunately, no MGO on subsistence for you guys).

@nflsonic: Almost certainly a repackage. And it surprises me to hear you say this- personally, I order the games seperately: 1, 2, 3 for quality, 2, 1, 3 for enjoyment of play. I should play through 3 again- it surprises me how much I was unimpressed by it. I don't know why, but I just didn't care for it.
That said, as I no longer have my copy of Substance, this is a must buy. I spent all that time getting the stealth camo and wigs and bandana, no way I'm giving up on it now.

@manjikengo: Yeah I'm aware, I work at GameStop too :P Although Subsistence is closer to 17.99 I believe. Selling on eBay would only net me a few extra bucks from the look of it though (except for Subsistence, depending on my luck I could get 20-30 for it).
Maybe I'll try selling Subsistence on eBay and getting this limited edition set >_> Then I can keep my original MGS, MGS2, and MGS3 copies.

I still say the original MGS is one of the best in the series. The 3rd is the closest. But I really have not wanted to go back. I already own Substance and I was already bored with the series to warrant buying Subsistance. I dunno, they are classics...but I just lost interest in the series at this point. I wonder if MGS1 is going to be a remake or just a repackage...

It's nice, and I still would like to have a copy of MGS for myself (I've beaten it, but only on a copy my friend lent me.), but since I already have MGS2 and both MGS3:SE and MGS3:S-LE I don't really need this. The only MGS compilation I'll get is whatever the final, full, complete ultra one is. One with MGS:Integral, MGS2:S, Doc. of MGS2, MGS3:S, the MGSagas, MPO+, and whatever expanded version of MGS4 comes out. Preferably all on one quad-layer Blu-Ray Disc that fixes all BC problems... ah, a guy can dream, right?

What? No Portable ops+? Pass... Heh, but seriously, I don't have Subsistence and I don't have MGS2 in ANY form... I may grab this... Too bad it doesn't come with Portable ops, but I guess it's still viable for higher priced sales... And, yes, it SHOULD be on one bluray, except that would mean only PS3 owners could use it, and all of the games would have to be ported to PS3, which would not be a straightforward thing... I can see it now: Framerate problems on MGS2... And I'd laugh, because that would be proof positive that it's the lazy ports that ruin multiplat games on PS3 and NOT the system itself.
If it weren't for THOSE issues, it would have been perfect to release it on PS3 on bluray... Boy, I would just love to play MGS1 with texture correction and without those crazy over-the-top sequences in Twin Snakes... I suppose that would essentially be Portable ops, though. It's just more business smart to release them in their original forms.
