New "Opus" and "Valhalla" Xbox 360 Chipsets Coming Next?
Posted by Mark Wilson at 5:40 AM on February 16, 2008
Excuse us while we go uberdorky for a moment. We've all heard about the Xbox 360 chipsets Xenon (90nm CPU, 90nm GPU), Zephyr (HDMI and cooling), Falcon (65nm CPU) and rumoured Jasper (not out yet, 65nm CPU, 65nm GPU). Now a new rumour has it that two new chipsets could be coming called "Opus" and "Valhalla." Here's the skinny:
The Opus chipset is actually a bit strange. Featuring a 65nm CPU and a 90nm GPU, the Opus seems like a step back because it's merely intended to fit in the original Xenon Xbox 360 cases. With the Opus, all those RRoD systems can be, in some small way, recycled. This chipset will probably be reserved for refurbished systems only.
That means the Valhalla would be the next chipset of choice since it combines the CPU and GPU onto one 65nm chip. Requiring even less cooling that we'd see in the Jasper chipset, the Valhalla could be the Holy Grail for Microsoft to make some serious cash on the console business. And it could happen either in late 2009 or 2010.
Now to sit back and listen to all the, "I have to wait until freakin' 2010 to buy a 360??" comments.
Next Xbox 360 Designs are "Opus" and "Valhalla" [8bitjoystick]

Odd that Valhalla is the new one - I mean, if Opus is going into refurbished consoles (ones which have technically died), shouldn't that be Valhalla?
Eh, who knows.

Anyone else think that Valhalla is kind of an ominous name? I mean, death in battle? Either that or it's an extremely poor joke. I'm all for tech humour, in most cases, but the 360 is way past the point where it's okay for them to crack jokes about its failure rate...

I've got an original 360, and don't plan on buying into a fancy new-chipped one until they actually add, idk, ADDITIONAL FEATURES. Sure, faster loads or whatever is great, but honestly, if it plays the game, I could care less.

I can't beleive 360 fanboys keep falling for the millions of xbox releases but the inside of the machine remains the same, crashes and lockups. Looks like every week a new xbox this or that comes out. Falcon, shmalcon, it's all going to die, save yourself some money. Get another machine...a PC even...but not a 360. Next week, xbox, blue, green, yellow and clear xbox coming. They need an xbox with a thermometer on it, that way you can shut it down before it dies.

hey if you're considering jumping in the water at this point, might as well do it. Hell I had a launch unit that automagically healed itself while I was on the phone with the Microsoft Support Rep we were both shocked and the system played on happily for 6 more months (had it for a year and a half). No problems so far with the refurb.

@KnightRider: In related news, the 360 I got in Christmas 06 finally decided to Red Ring. I had kept it motionless, isolated and in the open to keep it cool, but shit still happened.
In a way, I'm relieved. I'd been expecting it to happen at any moment for the past year.
Besides, I have to study anyway, and my roommate has a PS3, so two weeks to a month of downtime shouldn't be an issue.
Still, Microsoft better come up with a fix for the general problems of the 360. You should be able to put a gaming console in your entertainment center without having to worry about it's chip distending from heat, and you should be able to accidentally nudge it without worrying about a scratched disc.
Frankly, I wonder how MS can afford *not* to find a complete fix for the newer consoles it builds. The customer service, shipping, repairs, and new parts/consoles ought to add up after a person is sending in their 360 for their second or third time.

So, for 5 years MS has been concentrating on fixing the RROD. Then, 5 more years on fixing the second major problem: Disc-read errors. And to finalize, 5 more years to make the system quiet. :D .
Reading a disc (CD/DVD/BD) at high rotational speed is quite problematic, moreover if it's dual-layer, I reckon. I bet these disc-read problems will stay for quite some time. And Sony may have the same trouble with BD-DL.

OMG Microsoft, you have all the money in the world and can't even make a machine that works. My Xbox360 has been on the fritz for a while now. Some games play fine, others crash after 10-15 minutes. I even sent it back, but they did a crappy job fixing it and its still only about 90% operational.

It makes you feel bad about getting the console, because suddenly they're saying "It'll work slightly better and have more features in a couple of years". That makes it even worse. I wouldn't have had the new chipsets if my friend didn't take apart my 360(voiding the warranty without my permission) and had bought me a Halo 3 Xbox to replace it.
Just MAKE IT WORK IN THE FIRST PLACE and sell it. Sony has a similar issue, except the console gets worse each reincarnation, just a little cheaper. It really pisses some people off, but this time the thrifty ones instead of the quality freaks. I myself will go all out for quality, meanwhile a ton of people I know will complain about the cost dropping.

I seriously hope there's a much better system in letting consumers use their DRM-infested files that were purchased via the XBL Marketplace on a new console SKU.
I purchased a 360 a few months ago with full intentions of replacing it when a newer chipset later, and I've been wary to purchase anything - though I've gotten quite a bit of free DLC.
The last I heard, people are still having to jump through hoops to use their purchased content even on newly replaced consoles.
If this isn't fixed/addressed, I seriously will never purchase anything from the marketplace. It's ridiculous that you have to pay a premium for a service that gives you NO support for dealing with this company-created issue - when other consoles don't charge monthly and have a much more liberal policy on helping the consumer.
I'm really disgusted by Microsoft's policy in this area.

From the article after the jump,
"The Opus project is a "Falcon" generation motherboard designed to fit in a Xenon case."
and
"Opus solves a major hardware recycling and inventory problem since Microsoft currently has millions of used Xenon cases from RRODed dead systems and this lets them use most of the good parts from the millions of dead Xenons but with a newer tested more reliable motherboard."
Key Word...
MILLIONS OF DEAD XENONS
Just how many Xbox gets RROD and in turn, gets shipped back to MS Repair Centers? No wonder why there is a shortage of Xbox...
Anyway, so Opus is basically MS casting lvl 4 Raise Undead right?

@HykCraft: Consoles get updated all the time. The original X-Box had like 9 different versions. The PS1 and PS2 also had somewhere in that range. The only reason we hear so much about the 360 versions is because of the history of failure...

@kryo: A form factor reduction for the 360 would be all kinds of awesome. I think Sony's in a much better position to shrink their console though, what with eliminating all the PS2 bits and Cell shrinkage.
@Phenom88: One of the biggest gains of the new chipsets is greatly reduced heat output, which would mean the fans wouldn't work as hard, which would mean they were quieter. Changing out the fans themselves probably wouldn't make much difference, especially at that small diameter. In some consoles (like mine) the disc drive is actually much louder than the fans.

When will people realize that this is just another "smokescreen" tactic by MS to make you think they are actually going to fix the Xbox 360. Have people not realized that a different chipset is not the answer, but the CPU, GPU chips popping off the motherboard due to poor installation of the devices is the real reason for RROD. On top of that: disc straching, overheating, DRM issuses, loud noise, are just a few of major product problem this console suffers from.

The repair process is so annoying (and likely to fail) that you are thinking it's no longer 'worth it'...so you're going to buy an Elite. You respond to bad manufacturing, design, and customer service by purchasing another of their most expensive products. I was in EXACTLY the same boat, right down to buying a 'backup' Elite..but that one failed too (so much for Falcon=better)...the best option is to save that cash and jump ships IMNSHO

Looks like very soon, I will have to get a 3rd replacement.

I think mine is about to ring again. This'll be my third time sending it out. It's making weird grinding sounds when it reads discs and keeps refusing to read Graw 2. Can't tell you how many times I had to reset the console in order to play last night :( I'm about to just give up and buy an Elite. Going through Microsoft doesn't seem worth it.

@GPman:
The DRM issue can be easily solved, actually. All you have to do if you have a DRM issue with a replacement console is just delete your gamertag, recover it, delete your DLC, then redownload it.

@HykCraft: From what I know, its normal for any console to go through multiple revisions throughout a generation. I'm guessing the only reason we hear about the 360's revisions are because people in the gaming media think it might interest us to know about them, seeing as how the 3RL is a widely talked about problem.

I love it how everyone complains about PC's being so messed up as a gaming platform because of the ever constant changing hardware, yet it's pretty damn obvious consoles are going the same way.
Seems to me like it's pointless to buy a console now right when it's released, as they'll just come out with a better, more efficient version of it at some point.

@HykCraft: "WTF do they need to keep revising their consoles? Frickin' absurd."
Every manufacturer revises their consoles. The internet just makes it so we're more aware of it.
@Strangelove: "Opus"? "Valhalla"? What's next, the Oeuvre or Ragnorok chipset? It reminds me of "Operation Iraqi Freedom" or some other useless such name. Ah, the beauty of PR.
What the hell are you talking about? This has nothing to do with PR, these are internal codenames for the chipsets.

Quite honestly, the rrod is the big reason I haven't picked one up yet. I really don't like the idea of having to sending it in (possibly a few times)or paying $100 for an extended warranty to swap it it instore the next day. The then dlc drm issue on top of it is making me hold off. However I'll probably cave in when GTAIV comes out. :)

@HykCraft:
do you jokes?
Consoles get revised normally as part of their life cycle to reduce cost and fix defects. The RROD and continued high estimated failure rates means that yes, they should be revising their console. This is a good and proper thing, but it also means, that, I, like a lot of people will probably not get a 360 until they have eased my fear of console death sufficiently. An extended warranty and the hassle of shipping the console in, is not sufficient for me.

Umm.. Revising consoles is quite very normal. The PS2 has seen, what, 10 versions?
I like what Sony did with PSTwo, so Valhalla sounds interesting as it could mean a 'mini' 360 SKU.

From what my friends who fix ringed 360s say, not just about the heat but the way the motherboard is structured to siphon electricity thus the overheating problem. The Falcon is supposed to alleviate this.
Check the Falcon equipped ones and you're going to see that the powerbrick has a lower wattage requirement...

@HykCraft: If a system is cheaper to make, they make more money. If it's more reliable, they spend less on warranty service. If they can sell it cheaper they can hit a larger market segment (poorer/cheap individuals) and make more money. It's all about more money. Get it?

This is awesome news. They might actually have a reliable chipset combination in the machines just in time to kill off the system and move everyone to XBOX 720! Wooohooo! Lucky us!
I'm on my fourth unit since launch and it just red-ringed over the weekend. I'm really hoping I get a reliable system this time around but I'm still hearing stories, even from close friends, that they're still getting units returned to them that are jacked up right out of the box. If thats the case, I'm gonna be hella jacked...
Somebody wish me luck.
