New WipEout HD Screens
Posted by Flynn De Marco at 4:00 AM on February 25, 2008
A nice little gallery of screens here from WipEout HD which will be gracing the PlayStation Store soon. The game will be presented in full 1080p, running at 60fps and will be made up of reworked tracks from previous WipEout titles. Looks pretty good—although I wonder about the giant panda head with the "X" eyes. It just seems wrong somehow. Make the jump to check out the list of tracks!
Vineta K - On the southern shores of Makana Island, the circuit at Vineta K snakes in and out of the ocean and across the beaches. The highlights of this 4.4km track include spectacular underwater tunnels and cutting-edge architecture along the waterfront.
Chenghou Project -The feature-packed circuit at Chenghou Project weaves its way around the offices and corporate buildings of Makana Island's business district. The 4.8 km track contains a tricky inverse-cambered spiral and culminates in a long jump into the tunnelled entry of the final chicane.
Sebenco Climb - The 4.8 km Sebenco Climb track is cut into the hillsides of Makana's Sebenco mountain range. It features a steep traverse up the snowy mountainside, followed by a breathtaking plunge into an icy tunnel carved through the very heart of the mountain. The final section takes pilots through a challengingly tight chicane before they swing back onto the grid.
Sol 2 - The 4.4 km Sol 2 circuit hangs suspended in the clouds high above Makana Island. Consisting of a series of fast-flowing, occasionally open-sided corners linked by sweeping straights, the combination of harsh sunlight and blind summits ensure that Sol 2 is a test of nerve for every speed class.
Ubermall - In the heart of Makana Island's commercial zone is Ubermall, a 4.6 km circuit built into a vast shopping centre. The latter half of the track contains a brief split which rejoins into a narrow hill, followed by an outdoor park section that leads swiftly to the finish.
Anulpha Pass - The 5 km Anulpha Pass track is located in a custom-built entertainment arena on the east side of Makana Island. Although the track looks deceptively simple from above, the undulations of the track surface and narrow skill-cut are enough to keep any racer on their toes.
Moa Therma - The immense man-made complex of Moa Therma is located just off the northern coast of Sicily, with around a third of the track surface built using mag-strip technology. The centrepiece of this 5.3 km circuit is the gigantic horizontal loop which sits just above sea level.
Metropia - The 4.7 km Metropia circuit weaves its way between the skyscrapers and traffic control towers that dominate the Kyoto skyline. Glass-bottomed track surfaces and a stunning vertical mag-strip drop into the depths of the city are just two of the highlights of this popular track.

I can't wait but how will I be able to use my neocon controller with it? That's the only way to play Wipeout in my opinion.

If it manages to dash my hopes as WARHAWK PS3 did......i fear what I will do to my shiny black blu-ray player....

Looks kinda cool, I was a fan of the old wipeouts but this is a last gen title that doesn't impress this day and age in my opinion. It'll be fun and good most likely but doesn't have the same coolness the old ones did. Looks a little shiny which I don't like but graphics aren't everything and the graphics are mostly good anyway.

All of those screens are so high-contrast and generically futuristic. It's difficult to distinguish the racers from the track itself! That won't be as much an issue when watching the game in motion, but it still is visually unappealing to me. I loved the original, but it feels like the visual style of the series has regressed to being much less distinctive and attractive.

@coktoe: I agree to an extent. Although I like both series alot (playing a lot of Wipeout Pulse these days, awesome game) I still think F-Zero GX has better track design. It's also as fast if not faster than Wipeout Pure/Pulse/Fusion with 30 cars on screen at 60 frames per second. That's with fully textured backgrounds and effects. But make no mistake, I'll still have HD. Wipeout is the only other futuristic racer not called F-Zero that's worth playing. Extreme G2 and X-Gra could have been great with some pretty sick track designs but Acclaim never got the controls right. If you can't run a time trial on the highest speeds and get a perfect lap, the game is broken. That's ExtremeG.
@djsyndrome: yeah dude. picking up a 500GB HDD for my PS3 next month Woot woOt!
@jun581: No. I checked around and couldn't find any. Not in my area at least. Kinda sucks to because I could use one. I'd think they would be out round the same time that Home debuts.

I'm more pumped about this than Killzone 2 and MGS4. Seriously, I loved Wipeout XL THAT much. I wish they'd give a frickin release date though, from december to "early 08" when it's almost March seems sketchy. But seriously, all they have to do is upgrade the visuals and soundtrack and I will buy this game every time.

@humorbot: It's difficult to say what needs updating when it comes to specific franchises. The same can be said about most sports titles. It seems the fans who notice the differences appreciate the changes between titles (e.g. Wipeout 2097 featured subtle grinding, whereas no title since has had that feature), but the downsides to such changes are obvious.
Armored Core is the same. But, the fans keep coming.

It's interesting to think that Wipeout is one the few franchises that have been around forever without ever really changing at all, in gameplay terms, and we don't care. I certainly don't care. As if all it ever needed was more polish, more polish, more polish...
Sometimes I think about this on my Aquos 1080p LCD and start grunting like a pig at a trough.
