Nine Inch Nails DLC Penetrates Rock Band
Posted by Mike Fahey at 8:00 AM on February 23, 2008
Well it's not Still Alive time yet, but next week's Rock Band DLC is pretty damn sweet, especially for anyone who really enjoys alternating between singing and screaming. It's Nine Inch Nails week! The following tracks will be available for purchase next week:
Nine Inch Nails - "March of the Pigs" (master)
Nine Inch Nails - "The Collector" (master)
Nine Inch Nails - "The Perfect Drug" (master)
I can't wait to get my hands on some "March of the Pigs" drumming. Been practicing on my car's dashboard for years!
DLC week: Feb 26th [Rock Band Forums - Thanks Smidget!]

@HavveK: I prefer the style of The Fragile (album) more than the industrial-rock style of those songs. But any NIN is good NIN.

Albums please! FAH-KING-CHIT! That said I would like some Sublime, Tool, and Barbie's Horse Adventure soundtrack.
I can't bring myself to buy song, that could possibly be part of a later album pack, and would priced lower if the whole album is purchased instead.

I've been listening to a lot of live NIN tracks the past few weeks, ever since that OXM list came out, trying to pick out how Trent re-arranges his studio tracks for live performance. The problem is that NIN, sadly, has a lot of really good songs that don't have good parts for all 4 instruments. Okay, mainly the drums and vocals are covered, but there are plenty of songs where the keyboard/synth is carrying the melody, and the bass/guitar are fill-in noise. 'Only', for instance, doesn't really have much of a lead guitar riff (although bass would be awesome). That and, well, it's not exactly Trent's most vocal song. :/
Look, as long as they find a way to eventually release Broken as an album pack (INCLUDING Too Physical and Suck!), then all of my prayers will be answered. ;)
In further news, must find Points card ASAP.

Trent Reznor played and wrote the majority of the music on the popular Marilyn Manson records, before he and Manson had a falling out. Note how Manson's albums post-Reznor sound totally different, and overall less polished.
And I refer to him as a T-shirt designer because, let's face it,his main goal in life now is selling shirts, hats, and bumper stickers to mallgoths rather than being any sort of "artist". He locked himself away for a decade and thought he could pick up right where he left off,but guess what,Trent? Industrial has changed,it's not even called industrial any more (usually elctro or future pop),and you're not the king of it any more.

Ok, not being a NIN's fan, and seeing that the list of March DLC was already released, I guess I won't be buying anything until at least April. Though, this was one of the packs listed for March, so there may yet be some Still Alive in the near future (maybe even full albums? Who's Next? A guy can dream.)

Posted 1:38 PM 23/2/08
@doubtful: Press play on the drum machine? Maybe if your drum machine is Dave Grohl. Seriously, they should release "You Know What You Are?" from With Teeth. Grohl proved once again why we liked him so much as a drummer. Plus, it'd be insane to keep up with. He literally sounds likea drum machine.
@Eville1: Hasn't done anything new since The Fragile? Have you even listened to the albums afterward? Sure, aspects of With Teeth did sound like a callback to aspects of Broken - just with less angst. Year Zero, however, sounds so different. Sounds like a blend of things, including a little KMFDM at times (in my opinion). If you haven't listened to that full album, it's hard to have respectable opinion of the work. If you have listened to it and hate it, though, just keep on rocking with it.
Despite not having Rock Band or a system that has Rock Band with downloadable content, I like the sound of this pack. "March of the Pigs" is an incredible song for a party including Rock Band, and "The Perfect Drug" is just a great song. "The Collector" is good, but I would never think to include it in any sort of compilation. I'd like to see the aforementioned "You Know What You Are?", "Only", "We're in This Together", "Head Like a Hole", "Wish", "Love is Not Enough", "Survivalism", and "My Violent Heart" someday. I do wish for a piano/keyboard accessory, though.

I would have liked to seen "Only" on this, but I guess screaming "there is no fucking you" isn't acceptable. I'm of a mind NIN is still much worth listening to. And as for much of the same, I'm sick of when people complain about that, it's one thing to say that you don't like the music any more, but I like the artists that I do because they aren't trying to hit the latest trends in music and betray their sound. APC? I think Maynard knew it was over after 13th step, and Mer de Noms is the only stuff worth drawing from (Orestes would be cool).

Anything post Fragile done by Trent is absolute trash. Recycled, same ol same ol. If Trent's idea is to keep 15 year olds buying his albums then he succeeds. It's the people who were 15 when Pretty Hate Machine and Broken came out that he loses. If he truly wanted to innovate at all he would stop posing as the broken hearted loser. He's damn near fifty now. If you, like Trent are a loser at fifty then I have some suggestions for what you can do and where you can go.
That being said, Broken, Pretty Hate Machine, Downward Spiral..ok give me DLC from that. Even some of the songs from the Fragile. Anything post...Sucks.
Now APC I could get behind. Tool..Same thing. Anything post Aenima is exactly the same. Sounds the same, same words, same rythms. I'm awaiting Maynards newest. Give me Sober, Prison Sex, Eulogy, H, Jimmy or Pushit. (Opiate, Jerkoff, Hush etc.) And I'd die happy.

What's the point in saying you like NIN,but hate Marilyn Manson, when any of Manson's popular songs were just Nine Inch Nails with a different singer? I mean, yeah, they don't credit Reznor, but it's pretty much accepted as truth.
These are pretty cool tracks,IMO,but we need some stuff like Apoptygma Berzerk or VNV Nation for those who prefer a little less "mall" in their "goth". Reznor used to be a pretty good songwriter/musician,but these days he's more of a T-shirt designer.

What don't you like about NIN/reznor? You have to give the man credit for pretty much doing all of his own recording and song writing, and trying to push the sonic envelope.

March of the pigs - 2 thumbs (way) up.
The Collector - Sure, why not. Wouldn't have been my pick off of w/Teeth for RB, but it works. (Only might have been a good choice)
Perfect drug - Um... no piano in rock band? What the hell are you going to do with the outro? (I know the piano is way overemphasized in my head, but still! :-P)
Personally, I don't know how you can do NIN without doing Closer, but I don't know how well it would translate to Rock band.
Are the songs uncensored in RB? I know they cut them all out in GH. If they are censored, then I guess that is how you leave Closer off the list!

One thing I don't understand with the Rock Band tracks, is even though they have an entire gothic section for clothes, there is no gothic music. Some Bauhaus, or Sisters of Mercy, or even The Cure would be great.

They should release a combo pack with Hurt by NIN and Hurt performed by Johnny Cash.
That would rock. ^_^

@huffdaddy: Nihil is beautiful.. but, not quite as heavy on analog instruments or at least sounds for RB's instruments, thus why i said WWIII which.. while not quite as great as Nihil (IMO) has both the instruments and the Watts

I've been wishing for The Perfect Drug since the game came out. That drum solo is going to be AWESOME. March of the Pigs is a nice one, but The Collector just confuses me as a choice. Couldn't they go for something like Getting Smaller instead? Plenty of better material on With Teeth...
Still, I've been waiting for this.
@kidnicky: What are you talking about? He didn't "lock himself away for a decade", he had a really rough time recovering from his heavy drug addictions. Also, if you count Still, he didn't go away for THAT long before he released With Teeth. If you're only counting The Fragile as his last album before With Teeth, then yes, it took six years, but I have no idea what you're talking about when it comes to selling hats and T-shirts. Yes, there's merchandising, but have you done any research whatsoever into the amount of work he put into the world of Year Zero?
Year Zero had one of the most insane ARGs I've ever seen. I rank it up there with Halo 2's phenomenal "I Love Bees" ARG. From hidden messages left within sound bites on USB sticks hidden in bathroom stalls in concerts to the brilliant finale involving a secret concert that was interrupted by the pandemonium of "authorities" busting in in full SWAT gear, it's a brilliantly conceived universe that very few artists have the ability to come up with. Couple that with the fact that he made Year Zero largely on his own on a computer and you have no reason to call him anything BUT an artist.
On top of that, who are you to define what his music is supposed to be? People only call his music industrial because they have no other categorization to put it into. It's still brilliance, especially when approached from a technical/critical listening view of things.
Besides, who do you consider a good modern industrial artist? That genre has become such a mess since the 90s. And are you really going to argue that modern industrial isn't catering to "mallgoths"?

@HikariOblivion: I've already requested a ton of songs from Nihil on the Rock Band request form. It's the best shot we'll ever get of playing Raymond Watts in Rock Band. Although some all out Pig would be awesome. Veterano, Fuck Me, or Sinsation... one can dream.

@kidnicky: Dude, you haven't been paying attention.
"Industrial" these days is not called "industrial" because it is not... "industrial". NIN is Industrial and almost everyone else has sold out their sound.
I'd rather have an artist selling t-shirts as an independent musician, than someone under a big-name label selling their talents short. Or worse, under a little-known label selling out in the first place because they don't have the BALLS to do anything interesting.
Other than Angelspit and Combichrist, I can't think of many artists that I would still consider Industrial.
But it still exists. You just don't know where to find it, apparently.
And you haven't been paying enough attention to NIN to see they're trying something different, again. Which just so happens to be another personality's version of "industrial music". I.e., NIN is not fucking woosing out and joining the crowd just because your favorites did. At the same time it's not completely senseless noise. It's like freaking Bach the way the music goes all over the place and winds up making its point. Somehow.
And no goddammit, it's not electropop. It's not as loud as Downward Spiral or The Fragile, but there is thought and feeling and emotion and that puts NIN above a lot of other "musicians" these days.
But you know, just go back under your rock. You seem comfortable there.
@Eville1: You guys got yourselves a duplex cave or what?
Just because he's been around for like two decades doesn't mean Trent's new stuff is crap. With Teeth I admit sounded like a warmup after a long break, but Year Zero is getting there.
Even his weakest stuff has merit. It's just not what you grew up on.

This is just making the fact that some of us live in countries that *still* don't have a release date for this awesome game very very painful...
And yes Tool would be awesome, though I'd be surprised if it ever happened...still if they announced Ænima I'd order a imported copy to play it on and buy a PS3 (damn 360 region encoding >_<)
though there are other bands I'd love too see on there that are less likely....sadly kidnicky I don't think we'll ever see VNV Nation :(...or Lords of Acid :P though SirDanF's idea of a Nick Cave pack sounds awesome and actually within the realms of possibility ^_^ *lives in hope*

@dowingba: Hey, I missed this. As one of the few remaining BOC fans, I must say the only thing that sounds like an organ in DFTR is a long, held note. Also, every time I've seen them live, it was all guitar, no organ filler, so I have no idea what they're talking about either. Go Buck Dharma!

Very cool, now, if we could just get some KMFDM.. A Drug Against War would be beautiful for RB, as would most of WWIII... Singing in place Raymond Watts, that's a fantasy worth having.
...Actually, if I fantasize, I may as well go all out. Let's have some PIG. No One Gets Out Of Her Alive, The Sick, and Find It Fuck It Forget It. Oh yes. Please? I'm begging you <.<

This is the best thing that's happened to Rock Band since it came out. Although, it could be the worst thing to happen to my mic when I get carried away and smack it to floor at the end of March of the Pigs.
I'm also glad to see that this wasn't a pure commercially friendly pack. The Hand That Feeds may be a decent rock song, but it hardly gives you an accurate example of what NIN is like.
