Penny Arcade Appears in Newspaper Crossword
Posted by Brian Crecente at 8:00 AM on February 5, 2008
Gabe pointed out late last week that the webcomic duo appeared in the January 30, New York Sun crossword puzzle. The one up there, to be specific. Twelve down reads:
"Tycho's pal in the webcomic 'Penny Arcade' (4 letters)."
I can't think of any honor greater than being deemed crossword puzzle material.

Quite badass. Go Penny Arcade!
Maybe they'll grace the game show circuit soon? I can see it now...
Contestent: "Pat, I'd like to solve the puzzle! Is it, 'Fruit fucker'?"

@gitrooman: The rest of the paper notwithstanding, their crossword puzzles are actually pretty good. I've met the Sun's puzzle editor Peter Gordon, and he's a very nice, intelligent guy. He does his work remotely and has very little contact with the rest of the misguided Sun staff.

The new york sun? really? The free newspaper the literally litters subway carts and stations? The one bums use to wipe their asses with? The one that prints inaccurate and sensationalized stories ? ...Yeah congrats penny arcade, thats exactly where you belong.

@Stratovarius: I got it. It helps that I'm a huge fan of both TMBG and Conan.
@dacresni: You're right on being wrong. He was often just called "Div" too, so it doesn't even fit the letters.

I'll bet that Tycho, the linguaphile that he is, is a bit miffed that he wasn't the answer to the crossword query.

@Zombie Attack!!: pff. didn't fit.
even though it's part of the Onion, i was highly amused to find 'two girls one cup' and 'pwnage' (defined as 'Condition of total domination, as in World of Warcraft') in this week's AV Club crossword.

I mean, Tycho loves words. Shouldn't he have been the answer?

There is a greater honor. Being an answer on Jeopardy!
Just imagine:

"What is... Tea-Bagging?"

If I ever saw Penny Arcade in a crossword, I would never do that crossword, ever again.
As an avid crossword player, there is nothing more annoying than a clue that is specialized knowledge, as opposed to general trivia. If you've forgotten the name of that stupid volcano, "E..a" will put you in a good place to jog your memory. If you see "G..e" and that clue, you have no frame of reference. It's not common knowledge enough, and he's not nearly famous enough. Not really anything about PA, just a type of clue that's used as a crutch by bad crossword authors.

This is great! @FNOR: Specialized knowledge has been used in crosswords since forever, and is a Good Thing.
If you don't know about what the clue is referring to, you may learn a new bit of knowledge from solving via word-crosses. Books, Movies, Art History, it's all "specialized." Games have been mentioned in crosswords before (I've seen Mario and Pac Man in the NYT crossword), but I can see that a little more esoteria is making its way in. Good stuff.
If you want even MORE game references in your crosswords, try out the ones that gamegrump.com has started publishing. Not quite NYT-quality cleverness, but a heck of a lot more advanced than any video-game crossword ever done:
