Phun: A 2D Physics Playground
Not precisely a game, but there has been talk lately of physics (and science in general) in games, and this is a neat little program that's fun to spend a while playing with. It's still in beta and has the requisite bugs you might expect, but here's what the creator has to say about it:
Phun is a Master of Science Theises by Computing Science student Emil Ernerfeldt for supervisor Kenneth Bodin at VRLab, Umeå University. The solver is based on work by Claude LacoursièrePhun is meant to be a playground where people can be creative. It can also be used as an educational tool to learn about physics concepts such as restitution and friction.
You can snag the download (Windows only for now, but an OSX version is apparently on its way) at the Phun website, where there's more information. There's also a thread going over at the GameDev.com forums.

that is awesome!

I heard about this on Boing-Boing a few days ago. It's pretty fun, if you're creative enough to think up new ideas.
BTW, the scene save files are pretty tiny. The biggest one that comes with the game is only 103 KB. Also, they're formatted as text files; so if you had to, you could open them in Notepad and copy & paste them somewhere. Useful knowledge for people who want to share these over the 'net. (Please don't paste them into the comments, though. 103KB of text is too much to look at, and I suspect banning would ensue.)

PS If you like stuff like this and have a DS that can run homebrew:

DankPanties
Seriously awesome.

I like to make little water towers, than roll or drive a little car into it. Though the coolest thing in the game is that catapult. You can find one in the saved files.
Ra on the Moon.
wow, im having a ridiculously good time with this.

Pretty sweet...still...Garry's Mod remains more FUN for me...but more physics in games is welcome.

Working Model 2D called... it wants everything back.

@Iron_Dragon_2.0: You'd be hard-pressed to find any physics engine that can accurately deal with a situation like that. Actually, quite simply, none can. I don't think Havok has even really tried to deal with fluids yet, but if they did, they'd still be prey to that particular situation.
You have to account for the fact that when things are in static, i.e. continuous, collisions, the program has to do a lot of vector math, very fast. Add this onto how many water particles there are, and the complexity goes way up.
I wish things weren't like that, but they are. However, a lot of the challenge in these simulators is to work around such issues... ;)
tsathoggua
sweet, this should tide over my interest in little big planet for a while :D

The fluid dynamics are terrible. I try to drop a 100 weight block on a tub of water (Block was the same size as the tub so there was no chance the water could escape) with a small tube at the base. Logically the water should have been forced through that small pipe right (Aka super soaker style)? Most of the water went through the base of the tub even though it was a solid line.
Everyone knows when a fluid is trapped between two objects it just travels through one right? That's just common sense...
Iron_Dragon_2.0
very fun!

I tried to liquify something and it vanished completely :(
ZinkO: The Game (the kind you just lost)
DUDE... this game... er... toy whatever has consumed my time... I've been playing it for hours... I lost track of time...

i have a theory. graphics, outside of relatively basic 3d graphics, arnt needed. physics however, are f**king critical, or at least can be in alot of games. graphics dont do much other than make the game look realer. physics however...the better the physics engines are, the more possibilites are opened up.
i wanna make a fps game with graphics rather the quality of quake 3, with physics at the level of crysis. hahah weird i know...but it could poentially run on relatively low end systems, and be a hell of a lot of fun.
jrghoull
@yuki
i like the chunky water!
gique
@gique: Though it will look goofy if you liquify anything at that scale.
Yuki
play with it zoomed in - make sure the clouds are big, it runs better with tiny objects

physics is phun!!!
seriously, this ha serious implications for a educational game!!
LBP lacks the creational power of this game... Phun, as was indicated is not a "game" persay... you can sorta call it an engine i guess... the only thing left now is to put in a basis or driving factor to win :P

Come have fun on the Penny Arcade forums with those us fucking around with the game!

The article says it's windows only but there's a linux version too.

I love physics!!!
Ahhhhh!!!!!!!!!
Best. Free. Game. Ever. My essay is so never going to get done. I so blame you Maggie. Shame on you. (jk of course)

Finally, I can play out my desires of destroying buildings made out of irregularly-shaped blocks with a pair of giant nunchucks.
Draconis
Looks like phun (sorry, I had to say it)
Benjo
lol, my laptop can't run it w/o turning into a slideshow.
ZinkO: The Game (the kind you just lost)
I wish they'd make a Kingdom Hearts style 3D game like this.. the future of platforming isn't premade maps, it's creating your own! 0.0

They spelled 'fun' wrong. Very unprofessional.

They made my catapult-game idea that I was going to do for LittleBigPlanet.
I'll have to download this, if for no other reason than to hold me over until LBP actually releases.
PapaBear434
Nice, I tipped this news almost 2 weeks ago XD! Thought that Kotaku just didn't like it.
Still, Phun is far from stealing you away from LBP :P. I got bored after 30 mins.
somarix
crayon physics deluxe just got owned.
gique
looks really cool. Can't wait to try it out!
WrenixPhight
wow thats amazing.
Ra on the Moon.
*sigh* looks like I have to wait for the Mac version. :(

2D is the way to be. The world needs more lovingly-crafted 2D games.
Yuki
I don't want to be too critical of this as it is clever and cool. But fun? Sadly not.

@BurstBalogna:
Gah! *from

This is awesome fro the get go, i wonder how it'll be when its done

@gamadaya: The catapult within the catapult within another catapult.
Just played the sand game for a while you could create little enviorments if you really got into it. That is if both enines were indeed combined.
Think of the possibilities.

@Foamy: "After the initial hour or so of experimentation I've found it to be one of the best ways to lose half an hour."
Ha ha - priceless.
multimoog
Seems like a cool way to waste an hour or two. If they somehow integrated a game-making toolset, that would be awesome.
Strangelove
@GUNDAM-RX-78-2:
What is awesome? The gun or the mix of the physics engines. I ask because the reply links aren't working for me. Does anyone else have this problem.
gamadaya
@TheCleaningGuy:
It is a beta. And I think part of it may just be on your end, I don't get any errors. I do, however, find that things start to glitch up when I start removing things like friction and limited energy. Then again, maybe that's how things would act in the real world under those circumstances.
gamadaya
This looks really cool downloading now.
@gamadaya: That is awesome!
GUNDAM-RX-78-2
That poor sailboat never had a chance... :[
Vorpal
Phun is Fun, but INCREDIBLY broken.
Even when you quit, you get an error message.
It's a fun toy, but you have to learn to deal with its problems.
TheCleaningGuy
@Diebold:
Can you imagine what it would be like if they mixed those 2 engines? It would be the complete package, realistic physics and chemistry.
gamadaya
found it out a week ago. pretty damn fun!
too bad my computer slows wayyyy down when turning something into water. takes 10 minutes to do what a good computer takes 10 seconds
i think Phun needs some system requirements..that or my computer sucks that much.
you could learn physics from videogames nowadays.. fun too! that or blow shit up! :)
Akmed
Was waiting for this to come up. I made gun powered by an engine that does almost 400rpm. It launches a bunch of zero firction, super-dense circular pellets in a shotgun like fashion. It freaking demolishes the tower of blocks in the towerkill scenario, even when I set the blocks to max density. I also love how you can always mess with your sense of scale. I made a catapult that launched a catapult launching catapult that launched a rock.
gamadaya
Looks like the same physics as Soldat. Fun stuff.
captronj
I'm a huge sucker for water physics, so I'll definitely give this a try.
bob-e
This game is a great time waster but since it's only 2D the stuff you can do is limited. I've spent several hours messing around with it though and don't have any major complaints. There are loads of cool features but the water simulation is definitely the main attraction. After the initial hour or so of experimentation I've found it to be one of the best ways to lose half an hour.
Foamy
Free version of LBP
GodzillaVsJapan
This is very gool.
Maybe the second coming of Ski Stunt Simulator (in terms of physics-based fun factor)

Looks cool, definitely reminded me of LBP
