PlayStation Eye Tank War Demo Is "Next Gen" Tech
Posted by Mark Wilson at 4:00 AM on February 22, 2008
We've seen videos of Sony's Tank War Demo for the PS Eye before, and they looked really intriguing. But after having a hands-on today, I'm really excited over the simple tech demo.
As long as you position the various elements of the tank in proper relative positions (tank body middle, treads off to the side and a turret up top), the software smoothly integrates the design to a badass killing machine.
After shooting the video, I drew a tank of my own and was incredibly impressed by the easily digitized product. Because while we've seen this tank game before on plenty of platforms, playing with your own customisable character on screen is unbelievably fulfilling. Sure, the first thing many of us think is perverted drawings cropping up in multiplayer matches, but watch the vid and you'll realise that the unforeseen potential in the technology could bring interesting gameplay possibilities—even in a small tech demo like this one.

Makes me want a pointing fish shmup. Would Kotaku's lawyers send a cease and desist letter if someone made a pointing fish game? Can someone here make a nice flash game perhaps? Is Kotaku making a game? If so, how would we know?

Thats a great idea, actually. Too bad I don't have a PS3.
I'm sure its only a matter of time before something around the same general area of innovation appears on the DS. (Not including the bleh previous attempts.)

The Playstation Eye if used in creative ways that allowed multiplayer, could potentially be more innovative then the Wii controller.

@okenny :): I want to correct myself. Playstation Eye (New Eye Toy) has same resolution as the Vision Cam but higher frame rates (60 vs 30 Hz). Sorry :(

This is a cool demo. It's very similar to the crayon physics on the PC. The cool thing that relates the two is input method. While crayon physics allows you to draw with your mouse just about anything you want, this requires a Eye Toy and tons of paper and a healthy share of markers. The Eye Toy doesn't do anything really more then take a picture. The plus side (in case one is looking for it) is that an Eye Toy can take a much higher res picture than a 360 Vision camera. Now if you can hook it up to read image files, that would be more efficient. This is only negated by the fact it really doesn't matter to much since your doing Line art; I digress. Once in image form, a decent tracing algorithm will do the rest. I can't wait to see how people will start using this kinda mechanic that things like Crayon Physics pioneered. I really wish those guys would get more recognition. I wish these guys would have mentioned them :( Oh well... to each his own :(

i do find the creative aspect of this game, and especially the creative potential of this technology to be quite exciting.
i also, reading the comments, heard people suggesting how cool it would be if the Eye could be used to create and import textures for the game LittleBigPlanet, and you know what.. i would have to agree. that would make texture-creation REALLY easy for the average person.. i really hope it is implemented!

oh wow... its about friggin' time they scripted a "quick mask" feature.. then again, it only works on high contrast (ie.. black on white/red on blue/etc.)
seriously tho, if they implement this masking feature onto with games like LittleBigPlanet (draw something, mask it out, paste it on an object), then I AM SOLD. Othewise, i'll take the 2 minutes to mask the JPG in photoshop, import via flash drive.

@Fnor: You act as though if motion sensing has never been around before either. I won't say its a gimmick since it works really nice and opens many new doors. But it is by NO means new. Same with the movies and video downloads. That is not new, its been around for quite a while. Not on consoles of course, but still isn't something new. And according to you something like this has been done before?

@Leanid: Being a reductionist is possibly why you're not getting it. You might as well say "what's so fun about pushing buttons and sitting on your couch?" ;)
Besides... no one really calls some Wii games "casual shit" because the wiimote... they call them that because that's what they are in the sum of their parts. Most people still believe there is a lot of potential for the wiimote an other such devices... the problem is that a lot of shovelware merchants aren't innovating along with it.
I don't think the folks around here are "circle jerking" themselves through some delusion that this is the second coming of deep, emotionally drawing experiences... but at least its something different. Suppose that we imagine that there's more to it than just doodling a tank... maybe drawing maps too. Maybe someone can involve a bit of strategy to what you draw as well. At least this has us thinking and imagining.
It's the same reason that a lot of people are excited by Little Big Planet... because "play" can be "creative", but video games have tended not to be overall. It's a nice break from the usual destructive play.
@Fnor: Perhaps you missed all the criticism leveled against Sony for their own motion sensitive controller? I'd like to refer you back to the entirey of 2006. ;)
I'd also refer you to my above response... perhaps it is the "create" element than has imaginations captured due to the lack of similar experiences outside SimCity or painting a decal on a car/plane/mech.

It's weird seeing the way people view actions by different companies. Nintendo announced it was making motion sensitivity the cornerstone of its new console strategy, and was awash in cries of gimmickry.
Microsoft managed to create a coherent online platform that was generalized enough to handle all of its games and support things like demos and movies, and people act like it's a foregone conclusion, despite them being the only company in the industry to do it properly.
Sony lets you draw tanks and fight them with a peripheral camera and... that's innovation? I won't deny that this looks quite fun, but compared to the major accomplishments that the industry has seen in recent history, this doesn't seem like a massive accomplishment. Especially since this concept has been around since Magic Pengel for the PS2 (and probably before).

I don't get it, this is about as innovative as the wiimote and wii balance board. Yet the Wii stuff gets called casual shit, but we're circle-jerking to a webcam? Instead of a fancy gyrometer(?) or a fancy scale, we have a fancy webcam.

@onemanfilmcrew: Yeah... this is the only thing that people are excited about on the PS3... nice try.
But even if it was, in answer to your query: As opposed to yet another brown/grey FPS with anonymous hero in suit of excruciatingly heavy armor fighting alien bugs to save the galaxy from oppression/destruction or another iteration of Madden... yes. At least it's something we all haven't already played 20 times.
Some people's personal imaginations aren't quite so limited. I'd rather have a unique tech demo to break the industry monotony than constantly get the same old plotless, plodding shit over and over without an option to deviate.

It's games like this that I really enjoy because it looks so simple on the outside, but there was a ton of work that went into it on the backend. The sheer amount of creativity that can be drawn out of this game (pun!) is really great and could have a lot of different applications besides just the basic gameplay.
Also, nice job adding a new "feature" for the game at the end of the video. Time to sign an NDA before it's too late.

Don't mess with the pointing fish.
I hope we see this relesed some time soon although online multiplayer won't be very fun, I don't really want to have to fight endless swarms of crudely drawn penises.

Can't wait for hands on fooling around. Is it just me or could this tech and the upcoming littlebigplanet be the PS3's saving grace (not counting FFXIII and MGS4)? User defined creative tools could be the way forwards.

Those are Next-Gen graphics! Concept is cool, and the demo is very cool on a quirky level, but I can't think of a WHOLE lot that can be done with it that utilizes the hardware of the PS3.
