Portal Co-Creator Announces Portal 2
Posted by Luke Plunkett at 2:06 PM on February 22, 2008
Skip 2/3 of this G4 interview if you feel like it, just don't skip all the way to the end. Because just before the end you'll hear Kim Swift, Portal's lead designer, say that Valve's Doug Lombardi has just announced Portal 2. Well, we haven't heard squat from Doug, but hey, your word's just as good!

The endless spree of cake based jokes will not die.
Either way, Id prefer more levels rather than another game, I dont want any disapointments if they cant come up with a decent storyline.

"(such as only applicable to certain materials and surfaces)"
That's the way it is in Portal 1, and nobody's calling it "severely limited" in Portal 1...

I'm hoping they can do a successful full game of portal 2 , but I'd almost rather have a cross-over series of levels and the portal gun added to episode 3(which i highly suspect from ep 2 will be the case) with puzzles through out the game.. The problem is that i can also imagine that the portal gun unless severely limited (such as only applicable to certain materials and surfaces) would tend to break a lot of play mechanics in the hl world very quickly.

As the Portal Gun from 1 can fold two points of space into one then surely the Portal Gun from 2 will be able to fold two different points of time (and space) into one point. THAT would be something truely special and also very confusing.

Although Id assume the experience might not be as great as the original since it was the being caught off guard that made all of us fall in love with the game so.
Still yet totally do want a 2nd expansion to the game please.

I still say I came up with the idea for portal a few years ago. "A game where there's this portals and you can got through them and come out somewhere else". Of course my idea was you can shoot through them and stuff. I didn't think computers could do it at the time.
Still, this is an interesting leak. I think they shouldn't do it. Portal 1 was fun, and didn't overstay it's welcome. A second Portal game will only ruin it. but if they want to port it to a game engine that doesn't look like crap, that's fine by me.

Increased length and boss 'battles' are basically givens for any sequel.
More than 2 portals per person/gun would be cool to see, but might be too difficult to implement.
Co-op puzzles would blow my mind, as would some sort of combo portal/grav gun. Or perhaps that's the co-op - one person has the portal gun, the other the grav gun.

@Shaneman: No, I definitely don't want 20 or 30 hours of Portal. I don't want 20 or 30 hours of anything, to be honest. I'm an adult, seriously. I enjoy shaving my face -- I like the feeling of accomplishment -- though I can just barely stand five minutes of that every other morning.
Then again, I know people who actually took twenty hours to beat Portal. I will not name them.
Took me about two hours!
That was a great two hours!
If they're going to sell the sequel for $20, I'd have no qualms about it being two to four hours again; if they're going to charge $50, make it eight hours or so.
That sounds about right.
Also, I think "more" "bosses" are in order.
Though yeah, if the whole game is a "chase" -- with gun-toting "agents" following you, and you only have the Portal gun, which you must use to deflect them off your trail / trap them -- they could work a great deal of replay value into the experience. Length of the campaign wouldn't matter as much, and if the level design was great, it, uhh, would even need complicated graphics!
There could even be a multiplayer mode, in which one player has the Portal gun and needs to checkmate all the agents, and the other players play as agents, who have pistols and need to kill the Portaler.

@Spiffyness: Or a game like, you know, BioShock.. or Half-Life 2.. Or even a game like Okami. I'm not paying full price for Portal.. In the Orange Box it's great.. But it's a really, really short puzzle game that's cool for what it is. It's not a full game, and I'm not faulting it for that.. but try stretching Portal out to a full length game and it gets tiresome.. I don't know many people who even played through multiple times..

@Barob: But isn't the full title of the game "Half-life 2: Portal"? It's a part of the Half-Life 2 canon, so a gun in the game wouldn't be out of place...
However, I'm certain that portal's success is owed to the fact that it only had one gun, and the one gun was fascinating enough to carry the entire game. It was, in GLaDOS's words, "a neat gun". A sequel would only need this neat gun, maybe a minor upgrade to set it apart, but one gun is all it needs.

I basically did this face ":O" when i saw that cause I hadn't heard anything reported up to that point, but at the same time it was kinda obvious it would be coming.
That's cool but I really don't see how portal won game of the year at GDC. It did some neat things and all but it was way too easy (though for the record I'm only on like level 13 so potentially it will go from ridiculously easy to ridiculously hard in the blink of an eye but so far the most difficult part was when I thought there was an option to throw stuff held by the portal gun and me trying to figure out what the key was.
I'm not saying it's terrible or anything, I've absolutely enjoyed playing it so far and am definately looking forward to finishing it, but even my friend who's a much more casual gamer than I am, beat it in an hour and a half. So I'm looking forward to Portal 2 and I'm hoping its more challenging as well as longer.

@108: I think I might actually prefer that model, though the difficulty in that would be making it work technically- Portal 1's physics and graphics processing when looking through a portal did a number on lower-end systems (it would literally crash my computer until I upgraded my video card)and having larger levels might only add to that problem.

seriously, the last thing we need is "more content" from a brilliant videogame. games like portal are meant to be played, put away, and then recommended / loaned to everyone you know. the videogame equivalent of a paperback novel.
as a videogame designer myself, i have to say that the only way to truly expand on portal would be to set it in a "restrictive sandbox" "city". maybe with government officials chasing after you.
in other words -- scale the puzzles up to katamari-size. that'd be ballsy.

Can anyone confirm what she says in this interview other than from this video?
Cause if you listen, right after she says "had" and right before "announced Portal 2," the audio stops for a split second then resumes, indicating that it's POSSIBLE that the audio was edited. She could have been saying "Portal, too." And since her face was not visible during this part, there's no way to be sure. Also, the music in the background resumes abruptly as well.
I want Portal 2 to come out, and I'm sure it will, but I wouldn't really rely on this video to confirm it.
