PSP Development Now Cheaper, Bring On The Shovelware
Posted by Michael McWhertor at 1:38 PM on February 5, 2008
Sony's attempt to penetrate the handheld market has been, comparatively, pretty darn successful. Sony expects to ship some 13 million PSPs by the end of fiscal year 2007, alongside 54.9 million pieces of software. Even though numbers are going up for the PlayStation Portable, Sony wants to make it more attractive to developers.
Today, Sony subsidiary SN Systems cut the price of PSP development kits and support in half, making PSP development more appealing to those looking out for their bottom lines. That also means we may in for a new batch of lower budget games, making it even more competitive against the Nintendo DS.

@Witzbold: Actually the Tanya Grotter ones after the first one are more interesting than the Harry Potter Series... if you read Russian.

Hopefully, this gets used for more games like n+. I'd rather see a bunch of independent game developers use this to get their original ideas out there that they didn't want to gamble on with the high cost of production than for the big game companies to use this as a way to be guaranteed profit on whatever they can throw out there, no matter how crappy it is.

I just hope this turns out positive for the consumers.. I don't care if developers are saving money on making games when I could be on buying them. Cheap PSP games to get us all through the recession I say.

@Teggles:
If you say so, depends of what do you believe.
I think successful really means something when you say in what you´re being successful at, otherwise is ambiguous. So if I don´t say in what, I can interpret as I like.
Anyway my point was just to be funny, not to earn a "hey you missed the point award" because I know they are making money.

@Witzbold: I thought it looked similar to a Wii game I had seen on Amazon and it is the same game w/a different name per IGN. It was re-released as Billy the Wizard b/c the first title was too close to Harry Potter.

Welcome to the wonderful world of European shovelware.
The Barry Hatter franchise is indeed real. I was going to direct you to the website of Data Design / Popcorn Games, so you could see their other great titles, but it's currently down at the moment.

@pandafresh: I had a Wonderswan back in the day (first game/console I ever imported) and lemme tell you, there's not a lot to check out. Riviera, a few Final Fantasies and lots, lots, LOTS of garbage. Which is to say nothing of the system itself. People complain of the miniscule ghosting with PSP screens but playing the Wonderswan version of FF4, flying on the world map gave me motion sickness. While sitting down, on a couch.

It's definitely good. The PSP is selling extremely well now since the release of the slim and this just attracts developers to make games for the system which has a fairly large user base growing.

Well RELETIVELY they've done well. Considering that Nintendo's place in the handheld market is an entrenched fortress with titanium walls and gun emplacements Sony is lucky they managed to scratch the paintwork.

@StevenRafael: with Handhelds being so cheap, im suprised more people dont go mulit handheld. I bought MY DS a year ago, my PSP a few weeks ago and i jsut bought a Neo Geo Pocket color a few days ago to check that out. you can buy several handhelds for the price of a console, so why not do it...

Cool, I guess. If they create more arcade style or portable sized games to aim at the casual market, then maybe the PSP's software sales will pick up. But they'll never catch on to the DS's.
I still don't play anything on my DS except NYT Crosswords, and Chessmaster & Beats on my PSP.
Not the greatest games, I know, but my hardcore gaming time is better spent on consoles.

This could be very good. No offence to Sony though, I love my DS and there is still much fun to be had on it. Too many games coming out now for it as well and I still need to pick up that import "Beat Brothers" or whatever it's called.

Kinda surprised they just now are doing this. Not that they haven't done well in a handheld market dominated by Nintendo, but it seems that if they wanted to push for a larger piece of the pie sooner, they'd of done this say, around the launch of the slim model.

Or is that supposed to be sales? Really, I'm not sure.
But. Cool. It means cheaper PsP games than can be good too. More Patapon-type games!

"Sony's attempt to penetrate the handheld market has been, comparatively, pretty darn successful."
What kind of BS is that. The PSP is being demolisihed LTD by the DS and won't even sell half of what the GBA did in it's lifetime!!! This is after Sony claimed that it will bring the PSP out of the "ghetto" and into mainstream. The PSP is as successful in the handheld industry as HD DVD is to the video industry. Which both still alive because of stubborn fanboys even in the media industry!!!

well.. not all cheap games suck.
i'll read a review before i buy a game, so more games on the market for psp can ONLY be a good thing, from my perspective.
i just won't buy the games i don't want. easy enough.

Ok, I'll confess... I actually worked on the Billy The Wizard game for the Wii. Im sorry. The rest of the "games" can be found on Amazon here - [www.amazon.co.uk]
All the ones labeled "Popcorn Arcade" should be avoided.

Sounds good. I would not mind cheaper games, even if they had less content. Similar to 360 live arcade stuff would be great.
Now all we need is to make it downloadable.
