Once I was in Hakata Station and had just gotten off the shinkansen. As I was walking amongst a crowd of people on the platform, I looked back inside the train and saw a business man playing PSP. Guys, listen, don't get so excited for these "erotic" games. Today I was bored as all hell and downloaded a trial version of the PC erotic game featured earlier on Kotaku. Heads up: EROTIC GAMES ARE NEITHER EROTIC NOR GAMES. What they appear to be are basically MSN chat logs with some squeaky-voice actress reading the lines of the girls, and about once every 15 minutes it shows you some titties.

I basically scrolled past text for half an hour because I refused to be beaten by a Hentai game demo. It beat me in the end; I gave up trying to reach the end of the trial and just went to watch real porn instead.

But it has taught me one thing: Japanese nerds are a different breed altogether. Apparently they can't even wank unless their fantasy object has a developed story, personality, and complex social interactions with other fantasy objects.

They are called visual novels for a reason.

And this is not really new, a lot of then end up as console ports (Kanon for example) but the key difference that makes it news was all the "naughty" content was removed when they were ported before.

Also not all of visual novels have sexual content, Clannad for example lacks any but I doubt such games would be popular in the west.

ah sorry, it might be cos it's the UMD video version. if you're that fussed about playing it legally, you could always install custom firmware on your PSP then you should be able to play it.

@Gunhaver: You haven't played the good ones. Keep an eye out for True Love, which works out like a boring ol' text-choice adventure game, but with intermission bits of leveling your character like a Monster Rancher character.

There's also 3 Sisters Story which is only a plain textbased adventure but has such things as you knocking a chick up and your character getting beaten to death by his usual girlfriend because of this.
