Red Alert 3 Is So, So Real
Wow. That tease from last week really was Red Alert 3! Just goes to show, dream long enough and hard enough and those dreams can actually come true. The game's the feature of next month's PC Gamer cover spread, and since said cover shows only some concept art, all we know about the game is that it's a third Red Alert. Guess we'll know more when the mag hits shelves on March 4. I presume, EA, you already have Kari Wuhrer's agent on the phone? Because God help you if you don't.

Red Alert was the first RTS I ever played at age 8. It was also one of the first PC games I ever owned. Red Alert 2 and Yuri's Revenge were nothing short of masterpieces. I love this series to death, and I can't wait to see what's gonna happen now.

@withaneight: Why would you have a Mac as your only computer to game on if you care about gaming? I know people who use bootcamp to duel boot XP or Vista, but the video cards are very expensive and high-end parts are always late, and usually never even come to the Mac.
I wish you the best, but many times when using the DirectX API, it won't come to Mac. Open GL games have a much better chance. I hope it does get a shot on the Mac though ;)

Red Alert is an spinoff from the original C&C universe, in which WW2 never happened. However, the Soviet Union has gotten more powerful than ever, so it's up to the Allies to stop them. For most people, it's their favourite C&C franchise.

The Command & Conquer games lost their magic after Yuri's Revenge as far as I'm concerned.

well i feel stupid. i didnt expect the rumour was true. i thought the rts and pc market had died so much that resurrecting anything but the biggest franchises would be pointless. i guess red alert was played/as popular as vanilla cnc. in hindsight i suppose its obvious.
at the time of ra2, i was a little shocked and appalled by the new direction westwood took red alert in. ra1 and expansions werent tongue in cheek or camp. it had stalin in it, not renowned for his comic value. it was also meant to be a direct prequel to cnc vanilla. then ra2 came along and the whole things a kind of modern take on 60's-style schlock sci fi and soviet terror with giant squids, dynamite wielding madmen, psychic bald guys etc, and westwood deliberately de-link the franchise from cnc.
pretty quickly though i came to love it. once you accept its not meant to have anything to do with kane or tiberium and grasp the camp theme, its great fun.
so i cant wait to see what ea make of it now. as i said before, this is ea were talking about, so pessimism is the rule.

I used to use dogs as a cheap distraction in muliplayer. Send a squadron of them at the left side of a base, he sends all his tanks over there to respond to the 'threat' on his radar, then hit the right side of the base with my good stuff.

I think I'm not alone in my fear. The thing that made RA so awesome was the multiplayer. I remember spending hours at my friends house playing. Then I bought C&C 3 thinking that it would be great, well I was wrong. Single player was fun but the multiplayer was awful. I checked the number one ranked player and his average game time was 7 minutes! how are you supposed to have a good RTS battle in 7 minutes. This game will be a failure if the multiplayer matches last less than 30 minutes. (after saying no rushing of course.)

I dunno. I never liked Red Alert series that much. The first one was okay, with its Tesla Coils and so forth. But the sequal was ridiculous with Psychic units and Giant Squids and Zeplins and crap. I know it's a tongue-in-cheek game... but even the tongue-in-cheek units didn't do anything for me.
Anyway, it's gonna be tough to compete with Starcraft 2. Now THAT game is gonna kick ass. PUT THE PROTOS IN MY MOUTH PLEAAASE!
