Rumour: Pandemic's LOTR Will Be Battlefield-Esque
Posted by Brian Crecente at 10:00 AM on February 14, 2008
Yesterday Luke brought you news, via Electronic Arts' analyst meeting, that Pandemic was working on a new Lord of the Rings game.
But at the time that's all we knew. Luke opined that maybe it was something tied to their ability to create games like Mercenaries that deal with destruction in a sandbox environment or that, perhaps, it would be a game that, like Star Wars Battlefront, is all about combat and action over large areas. Close, very close, according to our sources.
We hear that Pandemic's Lord of the Rings will put a Battlefield competitive first-person shooter spin (with mounts) on the beloved fantasy tale and personally, I couldn't be more happy about it. I'd love to mix things up in a rolling war with magic, swords and bows. Dark Messiah almost got it, but in the end somehow missed the mark. Let's see if Pandemic can do better.
When reached for comment Pandemic only said that they'd like to talk more about their upcoming Lord of the Rings title, but that now isn't quite the time.

It will be interesting to see if they can get this out before Project Offset. Sure, the LotR license will pull in the fan boys, but by the looks of Offset, Pandemic will need a solid game to compete.

Relive the glory! Immerse yourself in the fully licensed world! Play the battle of helms deep with a limit of err, 32 players...

Dark Messiah had the gameplay of fps-melee down pretty good. I really liked it. Too bad the multiplayer sucked (I couldn't use the kick and I was constantly poisoned and killed by invisible archers or something... Then I gave up and went back to the single player :P)

Well, I hope that this does end up like the Battlefront games rather than the Battlefield games. Also, based on that press release, does that mean that there are no plans for a current gen Star Wars: Battlefront game? LOTR Battlefront would be a good substitute, but LOTR Battlefield would be disappointing.

@NotAZombie: Yeah no way. 1942 was the shit. The Desert Combat mod made that game AMAZING.

I'm looking forward to this, if LOTR didn't suck so much (IMO) I would be playing it instead of WoW. RPGFPSs always interested me but no one has quite done it right. I might check out Savage 2, but it doesn't seem there is much interest in it, maybe I'm wrong.

@Chupakun "LOTR in First Person? No offence to anyone, but **** you Pandemic *if* that's what you will end up doing.":
Well let's think about the last and current Pandemic titles. Mercenaries - 3rd person, Battlefront 1 & 2 - 3rd person, Mercenaries 2 - 3rd person, Saboteur - 3rd person. Why in hell do you think that they will turn this one into a 1st person out of nowhere?!

I've loved EA's 3rd person actioners and want more of the same (perhaps with further story exposition into the more uncharted realms of the novels).

I'm all for action over RPG but please, no first-person. ROTK was solid gold and melee combat is always better in 3rd person.

Can't wait to rush to a stallion that seats 2, leave before anybody can climb with me, jump off a cliff, deploy some sort of wings so I don't die and then hop on an Oliphant to wreck havoc on my enemies! O.o
Seriously though, 3rd person-medievalish-battlefieldo-lord-of-the-ringesque action like this = <3

@Draco Basileus "I'd prefer if they tried a Battlefront approach.":
Well, Battlefront is what Pandemic folks thought was the proper way Battlefield should've been done. So if LOTR is that game genre you can bet that it will be much closer to Battlefront than Battlefield.
So, the title above should read "Rumor: Pandemic's LOTR Will Be Battlefront-Esque" and NOT "Battlefield-Esque"

This will either be incredible, or incredibly bad. It takes a special touch to pull of first person mêlée combat.

If they can make a LOTR Multiplayer like battlefield, with guns and sword, and it's actually good AND it comes on 360, I'm sold. Would love to play some epic fight like bf1942, medieval style.

@jettokisora: Yep, so true. It's too bad. I got the game mainly for the multiplayer but for some reason every time I would play online I would lag so much (FPS and latency lag), so that kind of killed the game for me. The single player was pretty good though.

You know, there's a reason why there aren't many first person melee games. There hasn't been a good track record of those type of games, and it'll have to be something mindblowing to break that trend.

I never play one single game from the franchise, but if they make an "open world" to play like Oblivion was,it's a sure buy for me,I love the franchise, but I need a more deep experience, glad to know the possibility of this.

I always though this kind of blend would work real well as long as its done well. More and more I'm getting annoyed with developers that have a great idea and the resources but they don't polish it. and it really pisses me off when its a simple thing like glitches (see
BlackSite: Area 51 ) or simple balance issues (see halo 1 pistol and assault rifle).
This kind of stuff is what makes me want to start making my own games. But I'm not so stupid to yell at a football player that I could do better.
Anyway all we can do now is hope these guys pull it off.

@GUNLOC_MORIYM: "For Frodo" - also fun to say at the bowling alley when you're about to bowl a strike.
Thank you Pandemic for getting me excited about an EA release again. It's been awhile. Not quite the "Grand Theft Oliphant" sandbox game that I was hoping for, but "Battlefield Middle-Earth" works for me, too. Here's hoping it's first person.

Wishful thinking here, but I want something on the scale of Total War, where we have thousands of players on one battlefield. No fancy graphics, just a fuck ton of players charging straight into battle at an epic proportion.
Though I guess it can't be much fun getting killed so quickly en masse.

@Draco Basileus: Perhaps an option to toggle the view depending on the role? I do think 3rd person for melee combat would be more appropriate. 3rd person melee versus Oblivion-esque 1rst person melee, think of something God of War-ish vs Oblivion hackfest; I think 3rd person might add to the aesthetics of melee combat, and allow for a more sophisticated system.

"Battlefield competitive first-person shooter spin (with mounts)"
So it's like everyone's a hunter from WoW and you are riding a mount and you use the mouse to shoot. Am I getting this right?

MOMM misssed the mark by a WIDE margin.
Battlefront II almost got it.
Here is hoping if it does get battlefield-esque, the Assualt and Defend is just wtfpwnage. Big scale battles or nothing.

I'd prefer if they tried a Battlefront approach. The pacing of these types of bow and sword games is too chaotic up close to deal with in a 1st person POV. 3rd person would be better. 1st person games only work when your weapon can shoot faster than your target can move. Does that mean everyone gets to play as Legolas and fire off 15 arrows in 5 seconds?
Never played Dark Messiah's multi-player, but I'm envisioning Oblivion style mechanics against human opponents. Seems like a nightmare.

Dark Messiah's multiplayer had a lot of potential but was plagued by poor maps, poor presentation, poor class balance, and technical issues.
A Battlefield LOTR game could be really amazing, if they give it the time and polish it needs.
