Sid Meier Considering MMO
The man who brought you Civilization, Pirates!, and Railroads! is looking to capture a larger audience - all at once. Speaking to GamersGlobal, the legendary Sid Meier considers the possibility of stepping into the massively multiplayer realm of online gaming.
I enjoy the idea of doing something I haven't done before, so a MMO would fit perfectly, but I really can't say if that would be the next game we do or if it's still a couple of games down the road before we come to that. Because I have new single player games I want to do, as well. While the rest of the interview mainly deals with the upcoming Civilization Revolution, I found myself stuck musing on what Meier would bring to the MMO genre - other than a giant, persistent-world Civilization, of course. I'd suggest a Pirate MMO, but Flying Lab more or less just released Pirates! Online.

<3, Nothing more.

Oh please oh please be Mac compatible so I can gleefully throw more money at you, Mr. Meier.

Just... one... more.... hour....

This is, perhaps, the least hate-filled commentary I've ever seen on here.
Sid Meier: Uniting all gamers in perfect harmony since 1982.
But you know what I'd really like to see, barring the release of an original IP? A proper follow-up to Covert Action. An MMO version of that game would be insane, and would be fairly easy to implement.
Ooh! Ooh! Some mutant hybrid between Covert Action, Civ, and Pirates! Yes! Let's make this happen!
Excuse me while I change my boxers.

To force players to stick to the original city, you can make a "technology" that need to be upgraded to able more citys:
1 turn, level 1, you can control 1 city, 0 upkeep.
16 turns, level 2, you can control 2 citys, 1g upkeep.
32 turns, level 3, you can control 3 citys, 4g upkeep.
...
That way, people will have like 5 or 6 citys.

Alpha Centarui MMO would be great. He should make a gold edition of the actual game too.

A Civilizations styled MMO could be interesting.

@Taramoor: I would not pay just to play Barbarian horde lol
I would sit in a hut with my army and then one day 4000bc a scout makes their way to my hut, where he hopes to get gold or free knowledge, but I laid a trap, mowahahaha

I think the best way to do a Civ MMO is to have a persistent world type idea. Where paying customers choose their civilization and then contribute as individual units, Militia, etc.
Non-paying customers, however, will be randomly spawning Barbarian hordes.
This would give it kind of a Battlefront feel. Every time you spawn you're a different unit like a caravan or militia or musketeers, but the game could remember your level with each unit type so that you would have a constant feeling of improvement as you played.
Certain aspects would be tough to implement though. The scientific advancement system might need to be automated or randomized. Wonders and other construction projects might be handled via quests to earn the right to build them or something.
Hmm... maybe not as easy as I first thought. I still like the idea of people who are on the demo spawning in as Barbarians though.

@Aethyr: Oh no, I'm actually hoping it'll be an original thing, it's just that he has such an illustrious catalogue to choose from that it's hard to resist insane and ludicrious speculation like this. xD
@Tubatic: See? You start trying to explain why it's a bad thing and then it turns out to be totally awesome and you want it.

"GamersGlobal: Last question, what about Civilization 5 ?
Sid Meier: We should talk again sometime later this year..."
oh hell yes.
kromekoran
Oh, you guys. Why can't he just make an original mumorpeger instead of basing it on one of his existing games? Why's it gotta be Civ Online or Pirates Online? >.>
Aethyr
Sid Meier Saves the Universe?
Sorry. Had an Andy Richter flashback when I looked at Sid's picture. Never noticed the similarities before.

Sid baby anything from you I will buy.

Please Cid, Civ IV wasn't an MMO and that addiction lasted the better part of 3 years. If you create an MMO odds are no one will every see me again...
lostalaska
@Bellamy: Words cannot discribe the awesome you have put forward.
deadeyereborn
1) Theres already tons of strategy MMOs, mostly webgames like Ogame.
2) Pirates.well.. done and done with PTBS.
3) I think Civilization IV may benefice from central servers to host games. I have played civi games the length a week. Is more fun that way. If you play civi the normal way, you have phalanx, and the next turn cavalry. So you never uses phalanx the full potential. You need a very long game to fully use it.

if it's something that doesn't require grinding, leveling up, more grinding, buying shit, and yet more grinding over and over ad nauseum like most mmos, then sign me up.

Great Idea... HOWEVER..
Sid.. Alpha Centauri 2 PLEASE.. I beg you.

I think it'd be challenging to make an MMO with existing Civ mechanics. The land available would either be too small and get eaten up quickly by the multitude of players, or be far too large and make it difficult to play with friends (or anyone else, for that matter).
It might be interesting to have an MMO where the player classes are like the ones in Civilization, and your actions contribute to a larger meta-game of land conquest, research, and diplomacy.
ryan
but the thing with Civ is once your empire is squashed, you're done . . .
Then you'd have to play under the ruling player . . .
Then you've have to plan a coup against the current empire from within . . .
. . .
oh damn . . .
Tubatic
An MMO Civ game would pretty much be the one MMO to actually interest me. If it was well done, it could be some amazing stuff.
dowingba
Sigh, I have never played an MMO, I don't like the concept. But this? This I'd hit so hard it'd fall off the face of the earth... I love Civ games and if he mixes it up with Pirates! then I'd be in heaven.
zoesch
@smitty1123:
MMO Alpha Centauri INDEED!
But it's true what's been said...the MMO concept is a tough one to crack. Crack well, that is.

Sid Meier's Civilized Railroading Pirates! Online plz.
Seriously though, if anyone can inject some new life into the genre, it's Mr. Meier. Whilst there are good games out there they're very much similar to each other.

@Deadeyereborn: Yes...I did too. Gosh...I wonder what a pirate runned city and railroad network would look like (stares off into space)
@Sadkermit - Wii # 4595 8878 8498 7021: You know...take my game, make that the base. Then take yours and make it the expansion pack. HELLO WOW REPLACEMENT!!!

i would love it if he came out with something really similar to world of warcraft, simply to see the sad faces on all the children...
in all seriousness,
the mmo nut is a tough one to crack i wish him the best.

This brings me back to one of my ideas for an open world, open ended, huge & epic RPG similar to Gothic 1/2/3 - only set in ancient times or even traversing from era to era.
Sort of like Civ but you're right in the middle of the culture, exploring, gathering, fighting instead of governing it from a map.
Candlejack
@Sadkermit - Wii # 4595 8878 8498 7021: Its official this game needs nay, MUST be made. Sid meier I know you're reading this here our call! Civillazation Pirate railroad empire online must be forged!
Deadeyereborn
Actualy, a persistant world Civ would be neat.
Online Civ, for example, would have you dealing with global issues you can't fully control. The key would be to prevent ganking by higher powers, so perhaps a limit to what civ's you can openly attack?
It could be done.
OF course, Online Alpha Centari would be amazing...
mrantimatter
MMO Alpha Centauri please.
smitty1123
So, we could have an MMO where you live in a civilization of people that trade using railroads that are under attack from pirates?
sounds like alot of fun, I'm down.
Sadkermit - Wii # 4595 8878 8498 7021
@3/9/08=Brawl; 3/16/08=Bday...Two Great Days, One Great Week!: I think I just wet my pants.
Deadeyereborn
It will be a a civilization building empire runned by pirates who control the entire railroad network...now THAT is just awesomeness waiting to happen huh?? huh??
3/9/08=Brawl; 3/16/08=Bday...Two Great Days, One Great Week!
Railroads online?!?! SIGN ME UP! I am going to conduct all over that MMO choo-choo!
Deadeyereborn
I can see it now: Sid Meier's L00t!
Doomstalk
Civilization MMO, I would so HIT THAT! Man make it happen Sid!
Irenicus-the one and only
Considering that the former Mr. Innovation has released nothing but lukewarm ideas (Civilization 3/4 and Railroads...which is a stripped down version of Railroad Tyocoon) I doubt that an MMO would be a good idea....
develin
he should just call it
"MMORPG!"
108
@108: "sid meier's MMORPG!"
that's hilarious
108
At the risk of getting burned by other commentators, I really could care less if Sid Meier's name got attached to an MMORPG. I mean, look at Richard Garriott. His name's practically plastered all over the Tabula Rasa MMO and it hasn't been selling like hotcakes.
Goes to show you that a truly revolutionary MMORPG is yet to come, and I don't think Sid's going to be the one to do it.

NKato
Late to the scene, am I - but i had to comment when i read the above. NKato, not to cast aspersions on your disinterest in a Sid Meier MMO (to each his own), but your example of Richard Garriot is a pretty poor one. His works have already seen a successful online translation once upon a time.
Naah, Richard Garriot's problem is that he's lost his touch pure and simple.
Anyways, a collaborative Civ-style experience where you form nations and go against others (some as warriors, some as traders, some as worker-crafters) vs. the barbarian hordes? Very cool. It wouldn't have to be "persistent" persistent like WoW or EQ or anything. It could just be a meta game that refreshed every few weeks. Or maybe a world's length of time would be determinant upon how well the players are advancing the civilizations... it would be quite a feat to make it to a successful Centauri launch =D
