Simple 2000: The Japanese Hardware Chart
Posted by Michael McWhertor at 12:40 PM on February 29, 2008
With the popularity of Wii Fit and Super Smash Bros. Brawl showing no signs of slowing overseas, Wii hardware is back on top. Normally reserved for Nintendo DS hardware, the Wii has ruled the Media Create roost since Brawl's release in Japan. Things have cooled considerable on the PlayStation 3 front, with this past week showing the Wii outselling Sony's big box five-to-one. Maybe news of Metal Gear Solid 4's release will start moving some units, but we don't expect to see a big spike until Old Snake ships.
The console war in Japan went down like so during the week of February 18 to 24.
- Wii - 63,504
- PSP - 53,373
- Nintendo DS - 50,151
- PlayStation 3 - 14,060
- PlayStation 2 - 9,634
- Xbox 360 - 2,001

This chart seems a little retarded to me in terms of useful comparison. Lots of people will have multiples of those consoles. The decision has really been Wii + PS3 or Wii + 360 and separate from that is DS/PSP and separate to that is whether they already own a PS2.

I agree with what others have said, I don't think there is a need for DS is better than PSP or vice versa comments here, both can and should exist in a fair market. Nintendo has dominated the space for decades and solid competition can only ensure a better lineup of hardware and software in the next iteration of portables, so stop whining!

A fad is defined as something that becomes very popular with a small group of people for a short period of time. It is unpredictable, short lived and without social, economic and political significance
Hmm.... Popular with a small group of people... Nope. A LARGE group of people.
A short period of time... depends on what you define as "short", I guess.
Unpredicatable... Who thought it'd be this huge of a success?
short-lived... see above.
Without social, economic, and political significance.... No (it's a very social machine), no (Nintendo prints money), and maybe? (some folks have been trying to force the ESRB to change regulation on Wii games depending on the input)
Going by that definition, I'd say the Wii is, most likely, NOT a fad.
---
And mind you, folks, that this is just WEEKLY sales. It doesn't give you a good image of the big picture (the big picture being that total sales of DS alone eclipses everything else). So even if this could be considered a victory for PSP over DS (by the way, I love both), it's a VERY MINOR victory at that.

even though it's a 3k lead over the DS, it somehow debunks the popular statement that the PSP will NEVER outpace the DS~
To be fair to the PSP, the titles are getting better (patapon, ff7, gow, etc.) and the PSP is gearing to be a really versatile product (gps, peripherals, slim, etc.)

@Drakron: In reality, numbers 'winning' doesn't mean much of anything if there's not software to back it up. The DS has software at least, so I can't gripe there. But developers' stupidity in managing Wii titles might ultimately hurt those numbers, whereas people left and right seem to be willing to throw money at a multiplat PS3/360/PC release nowadays. So regardless of what the numbers ultimately show, there's got to be something to do when you leave the computer and return to the console, and unless Nintendo starts producing about another million a month, the numbers aren't going to start beating developers over the head hard enough to get them to do anything for it.

The NDS "won", the Wii is going on its way to "win" and yet the Wii is snubbed at if it does not really matters as the PS3/Xbox 360 "war" seem the only thing that matters despite the Wii having consistent high sales despite supply shortages.
The PSP cannot "win" because the gap to reach a 1:1 is too wide, when people say the PSP is recovering its simply its too little and too late ... it would have to outsell the NDS by at least 3:1 and would take years before hardware sales would be equal.

@baked ham: Price difference, probably. That and the fact the home console market is decidedly mild at best in Japan, what with all those crazy people buying up every handheld they can find. The Wii seems to be merely a haven for casual home gaming that families are in love with, with no really compelling software hitting there outside of some of Nintendo's offerings, PS3's price I think is still holding it back a bit, not to mention, again, a lot of developers in Japan putting a lot of effort into capitalizing on the handheld's numbers. Both the popular consoles also suffer from the unknown of who's buying it in Japan. People buying it for Blu-Ray? People buying it just for Sports/Fit? Home consoles seem like a huge unknown over there.
@sascha23: Ehhh, I dunno about way up. I'm sure there'll be a spike, no doubt. I just don't think that Japan is the haven for games that aren't decidedly aimed at them, and I think Metal Gear has always been a much more 'western' audiences sorta title. It'll definitely spur sales, but if anything will move sales in Japan, I think it'd be a certain SquareEnix title.
As for the PSP, it's still a bit behind the DS in terms of total numbers, but I think the both of them are going to stay pretty neck and neck from here on out, with only key software spurring sales. Neither have really shown any drop off, and both have decent enough libraries over there that some people might just own both and be all the more happy with them.

PSP didn't wipe DS out, didn't beat nintendo in the handheld market. Nintendo will continue to make handhelds, and sony now knows its possable to do so. Maybe now microsoft can take a stab at it.

@Drakron: People arguing for or against the concept of a "fad" are insane.
A fad can last a long time. For god's sake. Look at some of the fads of the 80's. They lasted for 5+ years. The Bee-Gee's were the top musical group in the WORLD for 3 years. There's no way to tell a fad until after it's over.
So it's pointless to argue over whether it is or not. Let's just see what time says (I'm personally rooting for not a fad, simply because I want to justify my purchase.)

Tales of Vesperia or not, I don't think there is any way the Xbox can come out on top in Japan.

Wow. Look at the PsP. As much as I love mine, I never thought it would do that well. I'm amazed. Gratz, PsP.
Ever since I realized I could get extra credit in school for "practical application", I've been making bar graphs for everything.

@sascha23:
Oh? do you want me to pull the NDS sales vs PSP numbers?
The fact the NDS can STILL sell 50.000 units IN A WEEK at this stage is nothing short of impressive, the PSP is still ridding on being a cheap portable media center that can also play games, especially "emulated" games.
Also as a news flash, the PS3 is NOT outselling the Wii in Europe, the Wii is beating the PS3 in sales at such a global scale its not even funny anymore ... I guess saying the Wii was just a "fad" is providing to be ... false.

I agree with Mr. Mcwhertor on everything. Wish I could add more. I know MGS4 will fly off of the shelves when it comes out

@Hitokiri151: I don't know what to tell you. PSP has become the sexy thing out in Japan and everyone's gotta get one. It looks to stay at the top for many years to come.
I do think PS3 numbers will go way up as we near MGS4 in Japan, but they are VERY fickle. In the states and most of Europe the PS3 sales have been consistently gaining.

Poor Xbox. The Japanese don't want a system made by a bunch of pig-headed Americans. :]
The PSP selling better then the DS? Crazy.

Hmm, guess we need more heavy hitters out there for each system. Still decent sales though. 360 could use that Tales of Vesperia right about now.

The japanese console "war" is so fucked. Seriously. 5-to-1 for the Wii vs. PS3 battle? Then there's 7-to-1 on the PS3 vs. 360 front. By my calculation, that puts it at about 35-to-1 Wii vs. 360? Just nuts. Why are they all so far apart?

well, Segas two releases will give ps3 a couple spikes before MGS4. But nothing that will hold.
