Competition in this space is fantastic and it's great to see Sony catching up, however, Xbox 360 is still WAY ahead in the USA. We'll see where Xbox sits once the hardware allocation issues are cleared up.

PSP - 211,000 (aproximately)
Total - 754,000

January 2008
Playstation 3 - 269,000
Playstation 2 - 264,000
PSP - 230,000
Total - 763,000

Looks like the Playstation total sales compared to a year ago is well... close to flat. Only rose by aproximately 1.2 percent compared to last year...

Nintendo has an valid excuse for having lower numbers, shops are sold out, can't sell whats not in stock.

And supposedly so is the Xbox360, stock constraint according to MS they suffered from a sell out over christmas as well.

These Sony figures doesn't at all show the Playstation brand 'strength' over its competitors. Because both competitors are stock constraint... meaning sales would have been higher for them if there had been sufficient stock, but NO one knows how much higher.

What the figures really do show is that the Playstation 'brand' is as 'strong' as it was a year ago. Which investors could either see as a good sign that sales hasn't dropped, or could see as a bad sign since sales numbers 1 year later is pretty much flat.

Killzone 2 is just Sony's way of saying "Yes we can" and then we quickly forget about it. It's a 40 million dollar ad for the PS3's graphical capabilities that everyone will forget once better FPS games come, like resistance 2. Oh, and now that Sony's back on top in the US (and Second place everywhere else), I really sorta wanna pick up a Wii, hahaha, have to wait till I get my job back, I guess... But then I won't have time to play it. Oh, well.

I don't see why it's cheating to mention all the areas that you made money in. Especially if the competition wasn't also able to keep their last-gen consoles in the market as effectively.

Oh and Windows isn't a console. You don't want to go that route unless you want Sony to start including sales of Ericson phones, LCD televisions, stereos...I could go on, but I don't think I have to.

No I agree, this is the best way for them to present their sales data to investors. However I am sure that if the PS3 was outselling the Wii by itself and the PSP was outselling the DS by itself then their sales data would have been presented separately as to demonstrate each outselling their competition. But since neither did they just grouped them all into the PS Brand. But I do think it is funny that the PS2 still plays such a big role in Sony's sales.

This is good for Sony, no doubt about that.

But consider the fact that PS3 sales for this period are barely up at all from last year, and the fact that its competition is supply constrained - both the 360 and Wii hardware are supply constrained due to the month prior (December) to these NPD numbers.

It's a small victory, but a victory nonetheless, for Sony.
