Street Fighter IV Arcade Footage [UPDATED]
Posted by Luke Plunkett at 4:50 PM on February 15, 2008
Capcom are keeping a fairly tight leash on people snapping pics and vids on the AOU 2008 showroom floor, but that's never stopped the internets before. The first shaky-phone-cam footage of the game's made its way out of the show, and is now ready for your slack-jawed approval/hair-pulling disappointment. Ryu v Viper above, with loads more after the jump.

And I'll say it again: WHERE THE HELL IS MY SAKURA!? I WILL NOT LET IT GO UNTIL YOU ADD HER CAPCOM. She's only my favorite Capcom female character from a fighting game. Okay, so it's a 3 way tie between her, Lilith, and Chun. Mmm, 3 way. But Chun is a given!

@Nexus6: LOLzzzz lets compare two fighting games that play completely different! SF just doesn't work in 3D. Case in point: SFEX. Capcom could easily make this game look like SCIV; look at Devil May Cry 4 and RE5. However, it just wouldn't work with Street Fighter and it's 2D plane.

I agree with those saying it looks a bit slow, but I would assume there will be turbo options just like every other recent iteration. The gameplay, other than the speed, looks intact.

As someone who eventually (after TONS of playing) got bored of SF2 and moved to SNK and eventually Sammy, I can definitely agree it looks slow - from that POV. For a SF game? I haven't followed the newest ones, but it looks about normal or a little faster. Actually I'll say something completely from gut feeling: It looks a bit more... responsive? compared to the SF2 series. Less wasted animation time. I'm not one of the uberhardcore who count the frames though so don't hold me to that.
Even if it looks a LITTLE slow for my taste in fighters, I'll definitely try it since I have such fond nostalgia for SF2. I want to try the new mechanics they added too.
(It's neither here nor there, but I'll always love the SNK sidestep. It shines so much in Cap vs SNK...)

@GoonieGooGoo: That is a gross, gross exaggeration. As slow as the original SF2? Have you ever actually really PLAYED the original SF2? That game is absolutely no comparison to SF4 in terms of speed. Not even close.
Plus, I will say that speed increases have never been of any real benefit to the pure Street Fighter games. Perhaps in the Vs. games, but not in SF. For real SF enthusiasts, speeding up the game is about as meaningful as adding something like X-Treme Hyper Moves to chess.

Speed increases? Some of you are ridiculous. I'll leave that to the next VS. installment, not in my SF4, thx.
Game's shaping up to look good. I'm happy people are actually giving a damn about the Street Fighter series again.

I see a lot of people here complaining about that the game is slow. I just played SF Alpha 3 on the PSP, and in terms of match time, SF IV is about the same as Alpha 3. What I think that is perceived as a lack of speed is the absence of a good motion blur filter that would convey a sense of speed.
Also, Ryu's isn't really ugly. It's sort of an intense look. I'd hate SF to walk the path of feminine male leads, which I'll look to Square Enix for my fill.

Gameplay looks fine to me, it only looks slow because this is the first time people have gotten a chance to play the game and don't really know anything about the mechanics. This is the same for all games. Watching newbies try to play Melee or MvC2, it's going to come off as slow too but those two games are anything but in the hands of a seasoned pro.
Besides, I don't think I saw a single dash cancel. Nor a dash in throw/tick throw. Lots of crouching roundhouses and jump-ins with early attacks though which is a very common tactic for newcomers to do in SF games.
Also, if you were to analyze the frame data in SF4, I bet moves are coming out just as fast as they did in ST and 3S. Same goes for the jump animations.

It seems that Capcom has advanced the SF Engine to ...1999.
That gameplay looked so slow I felt like it was SF II....not even SF II Turbo or SF II CE....but the original SF II....
While I think that Capcom should have devoted their energy to a new IP......others will disgree and I'm sure some will purchase this based on nostalgia.
As its not like there are any arcades left in the US to play it, it'll register some sales....but with TEKKEN 6, SOUL CALIBUR 4, and VF5 already on home consoles and online multiplayer....what's the point??

People here are pretty wrong about the speed, this is actually about 1.5 times the speed of 3rd strike(trust me I play it daily)and is more along the speed of CvS2. The only issue I have is that the damage seems a little higher than it should be. Though I'm not at all worried , this is still WIP and once it's done there will still be the arcade balancing period before it hits console.

I don't know what video you idiots were watching, but the Ryu player seemed just fine to me. He pulled off at least 3 dragon punches, one classic combo (Jump Kick > Low Forward > Fireball) and a Hurricane kick to show how the game moves fluidly, albeit a bit slow.
Still, the game is (from what I understand) so early in the dev stages that all these little quirks should be ironed out as the months go on. Everyone I know is being a big hater to the current direction it's taking, but I'm still hanging in there as an old school SF player (and shit I'll still play 3S over any SF any chance I get, Ibuki all day son).
Here's hoping they do the series justice, and from the looks of things, they're on the right track!

Looking at this stictly as a beta demo for the public, I'm cautiously optimistic that this will end up an excellent game with a bit of spit and polish.
Sadly, I must confirm prior suspicions: Crimson Viper looks like any number of King Of Fighters characters, and new character Abel looks suspiciously like a clone of Ramone from KOF as well. Which isn't to say they won't be fun to play, just that they are indeed only Pseudo-Street Fighters.
Animation is looking good aside from the occasional hiccup. I like the speed displayed for movement etc., but I'd like to see those moves tightened up a bit. Economy of movement, folks, is the first rule of any successful martial arts style. Too much movement tires you out and leaves you vulnerable if something goes wrong. Also, not everyone likes to play at ZOMG SUPER FAST LOLOL speeds.
We need to see some pro players take a crack at this to see how good it actually is.

Yeah, it does look slow, though I think that's because none of the people playing have any idea how the "saving" and parrying/speed-grappling system works.
In other words, Kotaku should put a disclaimer on this post: "Warning, these videos present people playing a deep and complex fighting game for the first time ever. In other words, they suck, therefore this footage does not represent what actual gameplay will look like when the game is actually completed, which is probably the precise reason that Capcom doesn't want people taking pictures or videos"!

I can tell they modeled allot of Ryu's animations after his SFIII character sprite. His LK & HK lowkick timing, his spinkick animation; hell even the way he falls looks ripped from SFIII...just done a bit slower. It feels as though the animation fluctuates from fast (see fall animations, specials and EX moves) to slow (pretty much everything else). To the games credit, Ryu isn't a fast character to begin with, and the players aren't that great, so that too should be taken into consideration along with the fact that they are still testing the game. All in all, the game looks promising.
Also, are peoples memories so fickle? Ryu hasn't changed much. He's just in 3D. The same designer of SFIII is doing this, and because it's in 3D we can see facial animation and design quirks more clearly. Click below for a walk down memory lane shall we? [www.fightersgeneration.com] . If anything, SFIV Ryu looks like SF: The Animated Movie Ryu.

Ryu seems real... heavy? for the lack of a better word. Seems kinda clunky. I'm actually surprised we are still sticking with this one bar life BS. Maybe it's just for the arcades... but I feel having the bar be filled at least twice is necessary for testing true skill in a fighting game. Anyone can get lucky causing such little amounts of damage.
In addition, I hope to see some sort of finishing moves. Moves that can only be done when the enemy only has like 5% health left. I feel like finishing moves/combos in that art style could look very impressive.

Damn straight.
I'm happy to see that I'm not the only one that's disappointed by Ryu's face. Shit it way too bulky if you ask me. He looks like Zangief almost.

Concerning the speed of the game, if you wait till the end of the clip you'll see links to other videos of the game which seem to run the action a bit faster.

Wow, the animations look aweful.
What's with the long delay after he does a sweep kick or Hado-ken?

Gameplay is slow. Doesn't look like there's any dash. Jumps need more forward angle to them. Generally reminds me of the 3D King of Fighters series, which is bad news.

@geoffcbassett: After Guilty Gear, I think people forgot slow fighters can be fun too =P
But yeah, there really needs to be a video of someone who's not terrible before we can tell anything about the gameplay. There's still plenty of time.

Models and animations are looking good (yeah ryu face is ryu lol), but I'm kinda put off by the generic particle effect they're using for... pretty much everything it looks like. Looks like they can only make blue and yellow particles too. Hopefully the other characters will have more distinguishing effects.

@YUYU: DUDE wtf? If your not impressed there isn't a need for something like meh? Post something insightful instead of meh. How about i think they need to fix this and maybe that but that's my opinion. we don't need that here. YARGH! *looks for dagger but remembers he isn't worth.

Way to slow for a fighter, can't hold a candle to Soul Calibur 2 and Guilty Gear X2. Oh how about a vid where someone actually is competent :P

I agreed with people saying is slow. The game seem sluggish to me compare to other Street Fighters, the animation was good and fluid, just that the gameplay look slow.

"Fix the face! Fix the face!" How many messed up character portraits has this franchise produced BEFORE a number four was ever even announced? It doesn't need fixing, it's called "artistic variety."

I feel it plays much like SFIII, but I'm no expert.
Ryu's face = Focused, intense fighter (it's them eyes that bother everyone), and really ugly as well, which I think it's awesome! Ugly heroes are quite rare.
Still I think that the portraits in Super SFII Turbo has been the best SF art every. You know, that one with pointy nose Ryu.

Wow, I must say, even if the footage isnt great. The game looks great and sticks to its roots. Im loving it, and the new character surprising looks pretty awesome, even though I wasnt a big fan at first. Im actually surprised and glad its not changing so drastictly. I can't wait for this game to be released, I want it now!

Hmmm the game looks a little sluggish, I don't know if the person playing Ryu sucked, but it seemed as if he was trying to do dragon punch but ended up jumping a lot and throwing fireballs. I mean, can 3D fighters play well when they're "suppose" to be moving at the speed of a 2D fighter?

It's strange to see the transition from 2D to 3D even though it's not really true 3D but....ah hell, you guys know what I'm talking about...
That having been said, I'm really impressed with the fluidity of movements and overall look, especially considering that it's coming from a shaky cell cam. Those jerks needed to get out of the way!
It still looks like old Street Fighter, and I really appreciate that. I'm so used to a 3D game moving around and following the characters, so it's really nice to just see a back-and-forth pan.
In a word: EEEEEEEE!!!!! (if you consider that a word and not an obnoxious, high pitched screech of delight)

The gameplay itself looks excellent, but I have one issue.
From the opening scene, it's quite damn obvious that she's a NMH tribute.
While that would make a cool Secret character, it shouldn't be a serious one.
