Street Fighter IV Coming to US Arcades
Posted by Brian Crecente at 7:00 AM on February 23, 2008
No word yet on exactly how widely distributed Capcom's latest Street Fighter will be to U.S. arcades, but a Capcom source told us yesterday it's definitely coming to the U.S.
A number of specialty arcades and stores, we were told, have already ordered the arcade machine from importers directly. Unfortunately, Capcom is still trying to find a distributor with the reach to get it into arcade. The big hang-up, it seems, is that nowadays most U.S. arcade distributors deal almost only with redemption ticket games.

I have every bit of confidence that Eight on the Break will get Street Fighter IV when it is released.
Eight on the Break, for the unaware, is an arcade in Dunellen, NJ and is home of the original East Coast Championships - a tournament series that started in '97 and helped to ignite the fighting game tournament scene.

There's a fair amount of arcades around where I live in the Chicago area. But most of them are large family fun center complexes that include ticket redemption games, a restaurant, bowling, some variation of team laser tag and other stuff to draw people in rather than the old style standalone arcades which had all video games, a couple pinball machines and maybe a skee ball set up.
I know of around a dozen of them, but again they aren't arcades in the traditional sense.

@Ramstein: There's at least 3-4 big arcades in the LA area, and several smaller. Family Fun Arcade in Granada Hills is the most popular, complete with their 5+ 3rd Strike machines. There's others though, too, like Arcade Infinity, Super Arcade, Regency Fun Center, etc. A good place to see which arcades still have a scene is on the Shoryuken forums:

Why don't they just tack on a ticket feature to all arcade games? That'll satisfy those dumb-ass arcade owners...

SVGL (Sunnyvale Golfland) was and still is a hot bed of fighting game competition. Some of the greatest Street Fighter 2 champs practice there.
You can bet they'll get a unit since Capcom USA is just down the road...

@Yeux de nouilles:
You doofus :p they're still around at places that are dedicated to being an arcade/bar thing/maybe some sort or restaurant bar thing, they're just not nearly as common as they were in say, in the 80s - mid 90s (maybe since the 60's?), where you almost literally had an arcade machine around every corner damn near anyywhere. Hell, I grew up in a pretty ghetto town through the 90's, and practically every pizza parlor, and some other random places all had at least 1 cabinet, and guess what, nearly every one was a Capcom machine, even ain any nearby arcades. How awesome was that? Having a good slice of pizza and a Capcom fighter nearby was quite simply, fucking sublime, you don't need those damned "rose-tinted glassed" to see how awesome that was and still is.
There are still arcades scattered across the u.s., and OH HO HO to this news. This should be no secret, but the casinos in Vegas usually have a dedicated arcade area or 2, and there are a few places that are pretty much dedicated arcades, and some bar/grill type places, so we get a nice littel bunch of arcades to pick from over here, so MUAHUAHAHAHAHA! Ahhh hahaha, AHHH HA HA HA HAAA!

@smitty1123: And how! And also when they jacked the price per play up to $1-$2 from 25 cents! Might as well buy a console at that price! The last real arcade here in London, Ontario was that Wizard's Castle place, where you had to trade your quarters for their funny tokens. MMMMM, X-men four player side scrolling memories.

Well, there are some arcades here in Mexico, the most popular games are the dancing ones and the fighting games too (King of fighters games are very popular here)so I'll bet that some of this SFIV arcades, will come for sure to Mexico,at least to the biggest cities(México city,Guadalajara and Monterrey) to the luxury arcades, placed in some trade places.

"The big hang-up, it seems, is that nowadays most U.S. arcade distributors deal almost only with redemption ticket games."
Well, that's easy enough to solve. Just throw a ticket spooler into the machine. You get a ticket each time you win a round. Hmm... time to write up a patent.

Shocking how in '94 you couldn't find a hangout spot that didn't have at least five arcade cabinets. Now, you'd be lucky enough to find a cabinet at all...anywhere (At least in the states that is).
That said, I'll be fully expecting this joint in Chinatown to be importing quite a few SFIV cabinets when they come out in Japan. My friends aren't going to pass up this opportunity when it arrives, localized or not.

two that I know of in toronto: downtown at Yonge & Dundas across from the HMV, and uptown at Pacific Mall 2nd floor.
that's in addition to whatever selection they may have at Dave & Buster's, Chuck e Cheese, or Vinnies (D&B knockoff).
oh, and a lot of movie theatres have arcade machines installed -- typically a DDR machine or two, a fighting game or two, gun game or two, and a driving game or two.
sega playdium might also be around in the west end, haven't been there in years.

I miss arcades - there should be some sort of national chain; combine them with bars/restaurants or game retailers to get traffic/revenue.
Sigh, I'd even settle for a mega-arcade in NY/LA; I'd make the pilgrimage.
There may be a few arcades left, but a truly *good* arcade seems to be a thing of the past.
