Street Fighter IV, The Pirated NES Version
Posted by Brian Ashcraft at 11:00 PM on February 12, 2008
Years before Capcom even considered making Street Fighter IV, there was this: Street Fighter IV. Made by "Gouder Co." this unauthorised 8-bit game was for the Nintendo Entertainment System and totally pirated. There's bad music and fighters like "Cliff," "Bunny" and "Pasta." Controls are apparently buggy and unresponsive. Those fighter names, though, are totally awesome.
Thanks, Torokun!

(The game... not the Contra-septive. Hah, see what i did there? I made a videogame reference during a talk about a condom. I rule.)
Maybe its the music, or the way the guy keeps getting hit over and over and over again like i do against some of the bosses. Either way all i could think of was that old Capcom game.

A lot of these characters seem to be modelled after true characters, aside from the obvious Ryu. The vegas showgirls act alot like Cammy, while Pasta appears to be Dan, and Stallong IS Guile. I wonder if Capcom made the guys who made this game 'disappear'.

What I really want to know is how (and why) they managed to make the music so freakin' out of tune. Did Gouder Co. embrace a return to mean-tone tuning or something? Perhaps that was their secret agenda.

Goho Li has to be the cheapest player out there. I'm not really that great at fighters (except Street Fighter II: The World Warriors, Battle Arena Toshinden, and Soul Calibur II) and I always hated it when my little brother would use the same move over and over and kick my ass. Seeing this makes me want to punch him, but alas, I am now living at the other side of the country.

I gotta say for the NES that's a pretty impressive looking game, especially if it was developed by pirates. Large sprites, detailed (for the NES) backgrounds and sampled voices make it a pretty impressive technical feat, even if the AI is so shit you can kill it by spamming hadokens.

This isn't a pirated game! It may flirt with copyright infringement due to its gameplay and selection of characters, but the underlying code is original.
It's more accurate to classify games like this and Kart Fighter as HK (Hong Kong) releases. Having copyrighted characters alone isn't enough to call a game a pirate... you've got to take the code from another copyrighted game and sell it as your own.

I'd be willing to bet this company dissected the actual SF code a bit. Besides the frames of animation being the same, the hit detection looks very much the same as well. And for an 8-bit game, that "shoryuken" is impressive. Sounds only slightly worse than the laryngitis stricken Ryu from the Genesis versions.

And yet, here I click. And giggle. And gag. And comment.
