Ten or Fifteen Bucks, How Much Will You Pay?
Posted by Brian Ashcraft at 4:00 PM on February 20, 2008
So, everyone's pretty excited about Bionic Commando: Rearmed. But how excited are you? Excited enough to pay $US 10 or $US 15? The game's producer Ben Judd is asking which people want to pay. Why? Ben Judd hates money, obviously. He writes:
...the team and I fell in love with the game and ended up putting a lot more time, effort, and money into the project than initially planned. Personally, since the goal is to make this game for the fans and to get the world to see what makes Bionic Commando so special, I want to sell it for about $US 10.However, some of the suits are suggesting that since the game is of such a high quality, has a ton of new modes, and has gotten a fantastic response from users, that we should go with a $US 15 price point.
To be quite honest, not everyone internally is sold on the idea of doing a full-blown remake of the original. Some think that we can go the simple "meta-emulation" route, put on a fresh coat of paint, and release the game without any tweaks or new modes. After all, that is the standard right now. Most of these games sell for $US 10 but aren't anywhere near the quality of BCR.
There is also my biggest concern: I want 2D gaming to live on. Gaming was forged on the innovative gameplay of 2D games, and maybe I'm a bit of a fossil but I want it to continue to evolve over time. Since BCR wasn't cheap, turning a profit won't be easy but without doing so it will be hard to justify this type of a production for future games.
So the question stands:
How much would you sell BCR for? And as always, since you, "the community" is an important part of the puzzle, we want to hear from you.
So, considering how BCR is a from-the-ground up remake, how much would you pay? Keep in mind two things: Some internally were totally against the "full blown" remake. That, and Ben Judd hates money.

I personally have always seen the major benefit of XBLA and PSN being the lower cost of software. You are asking people to buy something without a physical copy being in their hands. The only game I have ever paid over $10 for on an online service is Tekken 5 DR on PSN but that was a real stretch for me and I doubt I would be willing to go over that price point again. Keep it at $10 if you want to see it sell well. $15 might even be what it is worth but up against other software on PSN especially at the prices they sell for, it will be hard to convince people to fork our the extra $5.

$10 guarantee's I buy it on day one and begin preaching from street corners of the 2nd coming of Bionic Commando... and on the 7th Day Rad Spencer with his bionic arm brought peace to world with the destruction of the Badds. CAPCOM be praised!
$15 means I'll probably buy it eventually while in between games and bored.

$10.
Only 2 XBLA games were released at $15. Sandwiched between Small Arms ($5) and Assault Heroes, was Roboblitz. Did anyone get that game? And then there's Puzzle Quest, which was a steal compared to the $30 versions.
The suits might want to consider that $10 would get way more people familiar with the 20yr old BC franchise, which would get them more sales of the 3D BC.
The only way the $15 version will not fail is if there's nothing good released around the same time (both on download service and retail).

Even though I hate when XBLA games cost $10 when all they are are updated 2.5D versions of games I've played a billion times.. or can play for free.
However, this is Bionic Commando, it's got brand-new Co-Op and a bunch of new weapons, bosses, new arm abilities.. which all almost make up for the lack of Hitler/Exploding Head.

Also does this mean that if we gamers all BASH games in previews that they will become cheaper?

$10 only because I haven't played it or read a review. If someone says "wow, it's totally MORE than the original in many ways" then $15. You can't charge more than $10 for just a graphical update. HOWEVER, if it DOES sell like hotcakes at that price, consider selling additional levels at between $2.99 and $5.99 a pop (if you really want to make more money - as if).

I dont buy any games on live arcade for more than $5.
also, if they release it for $2 there will a 5million more downloads than if they released it at $5. And they can have a press release saying, they are the first game to sell 5million copies in a week.

I'd pay up to 15$ for it personally, but pricing it at 10$ wud make it more accessible to more mainstream gamers that wana get into the franchise before the full retail game comes out. SO if u want $ short-term, go with 15$. if u want $ long-term, go with 10$.
most of the XBLA games that reached the million + downloads are priced around 10$ or less (800 M$ points or less), while its much harder for the 15$ (1,200 M$ points) games to reach that. it'll be a risk that might pay off pricing it at 15$, but at 10$ its an almost definite guaranteed hit that will easily score a million + downloads quickly.

I think alot of people would be more likely to purchase it at $10 vs $15. Also consider people who are unaware of Bionic Commando, I think the $15 price tag is based on people who are familiar with Bionic Commando and probably played it in the past. My vote is $10.

$15 is pushing it. Take a look at all of the awesome titles already on the arcade for $10. Worms, REZ HD, Alien Hominid, Bomberman Live, Puzzle Quest... those games are all really awesome and priced right.
If they would have kept the original game and slapped a new coat of paint on it, the price should be $5. They didn't and redid it (which I'm glad for and excited about) but that doesn't make an additional $10 bump in price.
I think if they went with a $15 price, they wouldn't sell nearly as many as they would with the lower price and I'll buy it day one if it's $10. If not, I'll wait until it drops.

Why would you even consider paying $15 when the $10 option is clearly given? Do you tip your local GameStop employee an extra five bucks for ringing up your purchase? Even if this was a group of starving garage programmers (which it certainly isn't) they are giving you a choice.
I've always wondered why no one really seemed to mind the additional $10 fee for "next generation" games. Suddenly it all starts to make sense...

This is nothing more than a PR stunt. They would never, ever price the game at $15, and even if they did, why would they need people to vote on how much they'd pay for it? What do you think people will vote for? This is just a laughable poll. It's going to cost $10, they knew that long before they set this poll up.

Either is fine, although...
15 dollars is a bit hefty in terms of similiar market, not that 5 dollars will break my bank; but if the product is not proportional to 15 dollars as oppose to all the other 10 dollar games. It will be a bit questionable. If the higher price is valid then so should have PoP, due to the similarity of the remake and presentation, which was well worth the price and some more.
Its still a day one purchase for me regardless of price!.

@L_K_M:
I completely agree. I might be willing to pay $15 to have it on day one, but at the same time, if I'm doubtful at all, I want to be comforted by the fact that the price may drop to a point where I'm willing enough to make a purchase.
Regardless of the commodity being offered, this is the same system with early console adopters. We should all be used to it by now. Just don't ask us how much we're "willing" to pay, because obviously, 'free' makes me pee a little.

I WILL PAY FULL PRICE FOR THIS. Yes. I will pay 60 bucks for this game (and twice that if they put Hitler back in). And if it costs less, I'll buy it twice. For each console I own. Frankly, I'll probably spend more time playing this game than I spent playing Burnout: Paradise, Skate and a few other full-price games combined.
Having said that, asking gamers how much they will pay is the wrong thing to do. The question should be: At what price point can we maximize profits? The answer is most likely something like: Sell it for 15 bucks for a month, then for 10 bucks for a few months, then lower the price to 5 bucks. That way, everyone will pay the price he's willing to pay, and everyone else can still buy the game at a later date, at a lower price.

Considering the standard I think with the work they put in, they should go with $15. I think that's reasonable for what's offered here.
However, I don't think its worth that honestly. I think all games are overprice right now but that's the market. I think the meta-emulation or whatevers should be like 200 MS points tops. These remakes like Prince of Persia Classic are totally worth 800 points though. They're essentially making a new game from scratch. Bringing a polish to a game with an already proven track record in gameplay.
Summary: Games are overpriced, $15 should be fine for this one I guess.

US$10 is pretty much what i pay for lunch every day. I'd think that it's worth a little bit more than a hot meal and an hour of relaxation.
My limit of impulse buy would be just below 100SEK, which is right about US$15 with today's currency rate.
As a consumer and stingy gamer, i would of course prefer the US$10 pricetag over the $15. For $15 i'd like a disc and box for the game as well.

I think 10$ is not much. Like always we europeans have to pay more than gamers in the US. Minimum 15 Euros, but this would still be a good price for a game like that. And you know what? These days they deliver us a gameplay from 10 to max 20 hours. and I think that is not enough. A cheaper price would be a good solution. The more complex the game is the more we have to pay.

I love Bionic Commando. It was the first NES game I bought with my own money. Even I think the best price is $10. A retail disc release has development costs, manufacturing, marketing, and distribution costs. Then the retailer wants a piece. A download service cuts a lot of those costs, and makes it available to everyone. I didn't get Lost Odyssey last week because the local Gamestop only had 2 copies (but they have 20 copies of Def Jam Icon. Who's their buyer, really?). That doesn't happen as long as the customer can get access to the servers. In short, at $10 they have the potential to make more money than a retail boxed copy because they have fewer middlemen and no manufacturing costs. $10 is where it's at.

$10-$12 is pretty much the most I'm willing to pay for a downloadable game. I like SASCHA23's description: "Snack games" are exactly what these are. Anything more than $10-$12 and they had better start to deliver more than they have been.
$5-$10 for VC games? Awesome. I'm in love with that. I have absolutely no qualms about paying such irrelevant amounts of money on even short amounts of nostalgia/fun. $10 for Rez HD? Great! Seriously it's a great game but I'm not gonna get 40+ hours out of it. And it is a Dreamcast game.
But $15+ and it's starting to get into the range of "real" games you could get on last gen systems or PSP/DS titles. If you find a sale on DS games you could easily pick up Advance Wars Days of Ruin for $20 and get hundreds upon hundreds of hours of entertainment out of it.

I hope they increase prices for all games soon, especiall those with more *heart, 60dollars? bah, we should spend a 100 atleast!

I honestly want to say I wouldn't pay a penny over $10. Tacking on 5 bucks almost pushes Bionic Commando: Rearmed towards the $20 full-game price-point. But the more I think about how much fun the game will be the less I care about the price. Not only does the game look stunning, but the after watching the trailers it seems pretty obvious the development team has put their heart and soul into remaking this classic title. Also, the way I see it, Bionic Commando: Rearmed is almost alike a litmus test for remakes. IF it (and I do hope it does) does well, then a least a few more classic titles might be remade. So With that said I'd pay upwards of $20 to get my hands on it. I've also got my fingers crossed for a remake of Castlevania 2: Simon's Quest or the NES version of Strider.

if it's $15, there better be a demo!
it's looking like i will be willing to pay something for this game -- i am, after all, rich as shit -- though i didn't get rich as shit by spending money indiscriminately.
so.
if it's $15, there better be a demo!
if there's no demo, it better be $10!
that's it!

@Pai Pai Master: they should go for the price point that will guarantee the highest audience possible.
I agree. If they think it's a good game that will win them fans, then price it cheap and get it out there. It's not like it will cost more to push more copies on PSN. Sell twice as many at half the price and establish a fan base for your next game.

What an absurd question. Of course people are going to say price it at $10 or lower. Though gorgeous, Bionic Commando: Rearmed is still a remake despite added features and shouldn't be priced the same as newer, more advanced games like RoboBlitz or Puzzle Quest. $15 is too much to ask, especially for a side-scroller that you'll probably be able to finish in an hour or so. Make it an 800 Microsoft Points title and call it a day. If Prince of Persia Classic was $10, what's the discussion here?

It was a buy when it was $10. It's a no way for $15 when you can go out and get some full games for $20 to $30 on Ebay. Games that come w/discs and cases rather than DRM that locks them to one console for eternity.

To be honest, I personally would probably pay either. I think the game would sell much more at 10, though. If I had to guess, the market penetration at 10 dollars would probably outweigh the better per-unit profit if they sold it for 15. Considering there are only two games on XBLA at 15 dollars, and one of them is a port of a retail release that costs 30 dollars, I think it would be unwise for them to try to charge 15 for a remake. No matter how fully fleshed out it is, retro remakes are abundant on Live Arcade and the majority of them are 5 dollars, not even 10.

I'm guessing they'll actually make more profit by selling it for $10.
Remember, this is a downloadable game. It's not like they're producing copies. Once they sell enough to cover the cost of production, it's 100% profit from that point forward. Not enough people are going to pay $15. It's just a hunch but the suits sound like idiots if they think $15 will make them more money then $10 (which everyone and their sister will be willing to pay.)

I feel as though most XBLA games are overpriced at $10. I could see going up to $10 for Bionic Commando since it is a total 3D overhaul and a real, full game (not some jumped-up weekend project or tech demo). Plus the nostalgia factor. But if they try to squeeze the consumers because they blew their budget? Well, cases like that don't usually end well.

@Kj719:
Actually I'm pretty sure that most good PSN games are about $8, new ones at $10, as far as most go I'd say that the average was much lower because of the massive amounts of mini-games and PS1 games going for like $2-5.
I wouldn't mind paying $10 for SSHD or PixelJunk Monsters so I guess $10 is fine - as long as they deliver.

I would be willing to pay a maximum of $15 for this game however $10 really is the sweet spot. I think the game will definitely reach a much wider audience if it was $10 like other PSN titles. If someone who doesn't know what this game is and looks at the price first and it is $15 he might just decide to get a different game for $10 instead.

It is worth 15, but that is precisely why digital distribution and xbox live are thriving, because of inherent value and low cost.
$15 bucks and it will sell through the roof.
$10 bucks and it will sell through the roof, AND establish brand loyalty and customer appreciation.
At 15 bucks Ill get it eventually, when I feel like it and have some spare cash.
If it is $10 I will buy it on day one, no hesitation.

I payed $10 for fantastic PSN games like PixelJunk Monsters, Super Stardust HD, and Calling All Cars!. They're some of the best gaming experiences I've had so far this generation. There are other games on the PSN at that same price that I wouldn't touch with a 10-foot pole.
$15 would be great for the suits, but a higher price point is completely not indicative of quality in the DLC arena, in my opinion. If the actual developers have a say in what they price their title at, they should go for the price point that will guarantee the highest audience possible. If the rest of the team wants to sell it for $10, sell it for $10.
