The Answer To Guitar Hero IV This Year
Posted by Mike Fahey at 3:40 AM on February 7, 2008
While we never really had any doubts that Activision's next installment of the Guitar Hero franchise would reach us this year, we've yet to hear anything concrete from the company outside of the Blizzard merger fact sheet issued in early December. Now one giddy British band may have unofficially spilled the beans. The band is called The Answer, and in a recently issue press release they proudly announce that their song "Never Too Late" was one of twenty picked by Activision last month out of over two-hundred submissions at the Marché international de l'édition musicale industry trade show to appear in Guitar Hero IV at the end of 2008. Eurogamer contacted Activision for their response but received only the standard "No comment." It's almost non-news, really. We knew it was coming out, and I guess now we know one of the songs. Hooray!

@Fadakar: Yeah, cause Hellacopters, Heroes Del Silencio, and especially Die Toten Hosen (Die Toten Hosen, YAY!) were SO much worse than Made in Mexico. *smirksmirk*
@Dudemeister: For real? Circular notes means it's "stuck with the old mindset" ? FWIW I like those a lot better than RB's visual style.
If Aspyr releases a PC version, I'll get it. 3 was the first one I ever played at length and I enjoyed it a lot, even when it was raping my hands. Plus, EA doesn't seem to think releasing a PC version of Rock Band, which would take 30 seconds to port and could include the 360 peripherals is a good idea. Oh well.

Okay, not to sound xenophobic or anything. But Neversoft, I'm getting fucking tired of the foreign music you put in the GH series. I thought it would be over by the next sequel because they were just trying to find their niche in developing a game that was looked at to be good. But enough of it. The point of the GH series is to "rock out" to music everyone's heard or loved, and if not, learn the music. GH2 was perfect because the mix of wide named music with a few smaller but still known bands was so well done, and Neversoft ruins it by adding a shit ton of crappy bands no one has ever heard of just to make the setlists longer for advertising.

Everything you want and more still not fixed in the new Guitar Hero IV!!!
But seriously, Guitar Hero is dead.
They're stuck with the old mindsets of the original GH games i.e. circular notes, no gaining star power while star power activated etc. Only way this would garner my interest would be if they changed the game a bit and I don't know how I'd feel about that because GH is a nostalgic game to me. Comparing GH and Rockband is like comparing an NES to a Super NES: the quirks about the NES (retro music, graphics) are cute and nostalgic but most people want to move on and have something of the same but evolved.

After enjoying Rock Band so much more than Guitar Hero 3, I don't really see myself going back. And there's also that extremely unbalanced difficulty, it's like they are making these games exclusively for GH prodigies. That last song set was ridiculous, even for someone who plays GH2 & Rock Band on expert. Gotta agree with briguy here, not feeling GH any more.

@Waza: They're a business. So they'll want to make money. If you don't like their practice then vote with your monies. I'm not falling for the same game again I know that much. It's fun but it takes more than a new set of tracks really to make me want to buy again.

OMG they take consumers for little bank
activision is a money whore and want to make us buy an other 100$ pack for a guitar that (most likely) won't work with other GH just to ensure they take even more money from our pockets

@briguy: Agreed, I'm with you on this. Arrogant pricks. As a PS3 owner who much prefers RB over GH, but prefers the GH axe/gitbox over the RB one this lack of co-operation is a deal breaker

This is why I'm never buying Guitar Hero. Every time I'm about ready to bite it and spend $100 on the game, a new one comes out with different songs and a new guitar. Forget this!

Why does everyone seem to think that only Rock band should be around? No competition brings inferior product, so we should be rooting for Guitar Hero to come out and be better so it makes Harmonix keep on making Rock Band the best they can.

What a lot of people don't seem to realize is that these boss battle "weapons" isn't something new in general. If you were one of the few people who played Frequency and Amplitude, you'd know that these boss battles in Guitar Hero 3 aren't that bad. I found them to be fun and breaks up game with a new element. I hope to see them in GH4.

It's a real shame that Activision is going to run this into the same ground that THPS is occupying. They can't make the gameplay any better than it is now, so all they have are new soundtracks to offer.
Although, they could take the gutsy approach and add in something like open notes into the fray. Then again they could also take the annoying approach and add 4-note chords in. Which would then lead to the phasing out of 2-note chords altogether because everyone knows that those kinds of chords are far too easy.

The boss battles were interesting, really, only Lou was a battle of luck, the other two weren't so bad.
*shrugs* For me, GH should be about difficulty and crazy solos and GH3 offered a good ramp in challenge. Rock Band's definitely a lot more fun when you're playing with friends but I've always preferred GH for solo shredding. Granted, I guess I can't really speak for the majority since I've beaten TtFatF and Jordan on expert (I'm still probably nowhere near as good as a lot of the guys on Scorehero though) and pleasantly enjoy their difficulty.

GH3 was my last Activision purchase. After the crap that they pulled with the guitar compatability, I've boycotted that franchise. Rock Band is so much more fun anyway. GH has taken a turn for the worse now that Harmonix is no longer working on it. Too much product placement and too many unnecessary 3 button chords (I'm sure there will be a bunch of 4 button chords in IV).

Seriously do we need another Guitar Hero game this generation? I say just release twelve tons of DLC on us like they are doing with Rock Band and call it a day. Of course we didn't really need the last 5 or 6 Tony Hawk games either and these are the same developers.

@JRock:
Yeah. I mean I didn't mind the songs difficulty's, that is what we have come to expect and enjoy about Guitar Hero. But The Boss battles were huge jump in difficulty, mainly because it required more luck than skill. It's a great game and I still love playing it, they just got the boss battle wrong.

@Ryadic: I'll agree. They are a good idea in concept, but the "weapons" are too random for it to be a fair fight.
@seafisch: What was up with that? Judy Nails went from cool rocker chick to glammed up Barbie doll. Hooker level hooch!

@zsmith28: I half-agree with you. :) I enjoy GHIII's difficulty in general - I managed to work my way up to playing on Expert mode, and it seems like every time I pick it up I improve my score on a song - but I really dislike the boss battles. Something's wrong when I can beat over 3/4 of the songs on Expert but STILL cannot beat Lou on Hard. The boss battles just seemed disproportionately difficult.

@KaneTaker: The boss fights were an interesting concept and did introduce the new battle feature well, but it isn't something you do over and over. Now that the songs are available for download, it's pointless to even go back to it unless you want the challenge.
They really should release a new game because they aren't putting out enough DLC to compete with Rock Band and the lack of a game this year, could really put Guitar Hero down. Rock Band is better though, because Harmonix is the undisputed king of rhythm games.

Yeah Beating Lou on expert is not something I want to do again. GH3 was difficult to be difficult. While I am all for a challenge, the boss fights took to a level that was no longer fun.

I never really played Guitar Hero before III. As someone who only plays once in a while, I found medium to be pretty challenging. After playing III for a bit, and then playing Rock Band for the first time, I found Rock Band to be a much easier game. On medium, I felt like the only notes I missed were because the strum bar was a piece of crap on the RB guitar.

with the stupid note vomit that rain of blood is at hard difficulty, they'd better reconsider their difficulty scaling if they want to make more money with the 4th. We know the game, we didn't like the difficulty.... at least, me and yathzee didn't. :P

idk how i feel about 4 coming out so soon. i mean i hope this isn't a new trend. i mean i loved GHIII and all, but rockband was just more fun. it seemed to me that GHIII was made soley to be HARDER, and it just wasn't as much fun as the older versions. idk... i guess i had hoped that there would be a longer gap between the GH's and that they'd reinvent the game somehow.
