The Civilization Revolution Starts In June
Civilization's first original foray onto consoles is just a few short month's away, as 2K Games announces the official release date for Sid Meier's Civilization Revolution. Beginning June 3rd, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and Nintendo DS owners will finally get a taste of what PC gamers have been going crazy about for over 17 years. Designed from the ground up with consoles in mind, Revolution promises fast-paced action and easy to pick up gameplay while still maintaining the Sid Meier-style addictive feel of its PC predecessors. In honor of the release date, 2K has released a slew of screenshots in both DS and Xbox 360 flavors, and you know how much we love our slews.

I overplayed Age of Empires on DS, so this looks like another good excuse to go on a airplane.

I'd love to play this on DS, but I think it would sap all of my free time. Bad enough as it is, Civ is behind my interest in military history.

Ninja Gaiden 2 is being released on June 3, so we know there are ninjas on that day. Hopefully there will be pirates too.

That Egyptian looks like a man in drag...
Nintenboy01
It was the original Civilization that was released on the Atari, SNES and PSX. So no, this isn't the first Civ game on a console...
EGBTMagus
Never been a huge RTS fiend but the DS version looks like a good time waster on the go. Any hope of getting Pirates!?
SwordandSorcery
Uhhh Civilization has been on consoles before. Civ 2 was on PS1 i think.
Tiberian
Day 174 buy for me.

I am sooo getting this for the DS, ability to play Civ on the road is an addiction that can't be beaten :) I hope the DS version will be great. Nice screens, not that the art is the best but I don't care about Civ art.

I played Civ 3 and 4...and they weren't that difficult...how will the console version be easier?
Because it's more fast paced? I'm confused.
Vecha
Wanda Sykes is that you up there in that screenshot, girl?

I'm a sony guy, but to be honest, the DS seems the best system to play this on, short of perhaps the PC. This game would be MADE for the stylus.

@geekiscool: I have a P3 883 mhz processor on an 8 year old laptop that I got for free, it barely plays Galactic Civilizations 2. I'm hoping my PS3 will be much more up to snuff.
DrunkRaba
Why would anyone want to play this? With the exception of the DS version, all this is going to be is a stripped down version of the PC version. Why not just get the CPU version, its not that intenive in terms of power involved.
geekiscool
No PSP version...perhaps a good time for a sadpanda face.

@Forkball: Naming rivers, I just noticed that :) I hope we get fun advisors and such, like in Civ2 the advisors were great, added some life into it. And I also hope diplomacy is big, like after latest civ4 expansion but not shit like civ4 was before and also how influence works, with borders and using espionage.
But I would be happy with Civ 1 for the DS :)

looking forward to this inhabiting my PS3 soon!
DrunkRaba
Proof that there have been transgendered people since the beginning of civilization.
dirkxxdiggler
OK, the woman in that shot looks like Dennis Rodman for crying out loud. Don't they have anything better to show?
gatorjosh
At first I thought it would be Civ Lite, but it's shaping up to be pretty cool. I like the graphics, and naming landmarks is a new, interesting addition.
Forkball
It's a trap!!

@SwordandSorcery: Civ isn't a traditional RTS, more like a Turn Based Strategy game.
COLDBLOODED_BMC
That lady is ugly.(Or i think that is a lady.)

@Joeshie:
Precisely. I don't know if it actually improves sales to simplify gameplay when translating a game to consoles, but the game makers certainly think it does. That's why the PC remains the only place to get involved strategy and role-playing games.
Pantsman
@Tiberian: You are correct. I loved playing Civ on my PS, it made me buy and play the hell out of all the PC versions.
COLDBLOODED_BMC
@Triggster:I would give this game a try if i was for the PSP, if they provide a free demo download, I HATE forking over money to GAMESTOP for a preorder/limited time demo.

@Nintenboy01:
A marionette man in drag? There's something freaky about that pose...

@Tiberian:
Civilization I for SNES
NiGHTSSTUDiO
hooray for the DS! can't wait
jarjarwang
I'm pretty excited for the DS version. This will especially come in handy during the summer, when most of us are traveling long distances.
Let's hope they don't screw these up!
Benjamin Linus
@Triggster: It sux yes. I'm so glad I got myself a DS-Lite :)
@Joeshie: yep, I don't see any problem using a gamepad for a Civ game.
Irenicus-the one and only
No PSP? Damn.
Triggster
@Hiero Glyph:
That doesn't make any sense. The PC Civilizations are turn based so there really isn't any inherent problem with taking a little more time to do the necessary actions on a gamepad.
The fact that they are switching to a faster-paced, more combat oriented Civilization paints the picture that they don't think a deep, intelligent strategy game can sell as well as a game that is dumbed down for the masses.
Also, FYI, Civilization is one of the few strategy games that I would be generally ok with playing using a gamepad simply due to the turn-based style.
Joeshie
I can't wait. :)
Cole
Curse this game and its gender-confused characters!
sisedi
I refuse to buy this game until they stop corrupting our children with their violence and egyptian transvestites. This is a murder simulator that debases women, err, men... Murder Simulator!
FadedEchos
@TORGEN: okay well i don't play many of those either,RTS VS TBS IMHO IDC & alphabet soup in my SUV @ 60MPH with NWA on CBS playing DK on DS
SwordandSorcery
@Tiberian:
Aye, and was INCREDIBLY good too. Loved it.
However, the original Civilization was also on the SNES. That one didn't translate over so well.
Bummer Civ 3 and 4 never came out on a console. Thankfully, I won't have to upgrade my PC situation in order to play the new one.
;-) :-)
Zombie Attack!!
@SwordandSorcery: Doubt it, Pirates went to the PSP.
BornToFlail
it looks a lot like civ4 :(
@Tiberian: I think there was an NES version too
TheHun
Hate to nitpick, but wasn't Civ I on the SNES and Civ II on the PS1?
RurouniQ
@Hiero Glyph: Given that Civilization is turn based I doubt the platform and input method have anything to do with the level of skill required to play it.
GUNJAM
i second the egyptian in drag comment.
tenkaix
@Joeshie: No, most consoles have limited buttons to utilize so the control commands need to be streamlined. In fact as each button handles multiple functions, if anything, the consoles require more skill to play properly as opposed to their single function per key PC bretheren.
Hiero Glyph
@SwordandSorcery: Civ isn't real time, and based on the 'skip turn' options, neither is this version.
Torgen thinks AAA means "Costs $60"
Was never big into Civ, but I loved Alpha Centauri. Too bad it would crash hard >50% of the time during late game turns. Also, it never worked for me under XP, even after the patch that was supposed to make it work under XP.
The Avalon Hill Civilization board game, though... we often joked about playing a 'quick game of civ'.
Torgen thinks AAA means "Costs $60"
Never was a huge fan of Civ...it just seemed like a game that leaned more towards the micromanaging cities (logically, since its called Civilization).
I guess the Total War series was more for me since it leaned more towards the fighting and less of the micromanaging.
Zenian
@Tiberian: The man is right, I quite enjoyed it {Not that the PC version wasn't light years ahead}.
I'm looking forward to this, I hope Sid got it right on consoles.
Zeouterlimits
"Designed from the ground up with consoles in mind"
And people still think that games aren't dumbed down for console users.
