The Force Unleashed to Deliver "I Am Your Father" Moment
Posted by Brian Crecente at 5:00 AM on February 7, 2008
Variety has a pretty epic story in their March issue that delves deep into LucasArts upcoming Star Wars game The Force Unleashed. Writer Frank DiGiacomo does not only an amazing job of shedding light on a hotly anticipated game, but also manages to lead the uninitiated on a quick tour of both the history of video gaming and the problems the emerging medium still struggles with. The story then quickly plunges into the making of the upcoming game and some of the issues the devs have run into while trying to blend new tech with old for the game.
The story does mention a few things interesting to the hardcore as well, like the fact that they had to play down the game's realism because if a person was really hit with a force blow it would be like being smacked with a cannon ball, and perhaps a bit too gruesome for the T-rating they are shooting for.
The article says that Force Unleashed, which is meant to tell the story of the time between Episode III and Episode IV by fleshing out Darth Vader, has a plot twist "almost as good as the "I am your father" moment from Star Wars: Episode V--The Empire Strikes Back." The game also contains surprising revelations about the birth of the Rebel Alliance.
There isn't, actually, a ton of detail about the game's play in the lengthy three-page article, but it ends with this gem of a description of a play through on the PS3 of the prologue:
The Dark Lord of the Sith is on Piper's screen, his black cape billowing, his death's-head helmet gleaming in the computer-generated sunlight. Piper guides Vader forward using the game controller and eventually arrives at a narrow rope bridge of lashed-together logs. As the Wookiees begin to charge across the bridge, Piper mashes buttons and summons up a ball of Force energy that, in a nice artistic touch, withers the plant life beneath Vader's boots. Then, pushing another button, he hurls that energy at the furry, fanged Wookiees. A bunch of them go flying off into space, causing the D.M.M.-enabled bridge to start rippling like a water bed. This sends more Euphoria-infused Wookiees toppling over the sides while those that remain struggle to regain their balance. They are only prolonging the inevitable. Using a more personal form of the Force, Vader hoists a struggling Wookiee into the air and dashes him against a wooden support beam, which cracks and splinters with remarkable authenticity. As another warrior is lifted, he grabs on to one of the remaining beams and hangs on for dear life, but Vader dislodges the wooden buttress and hurls it, with the Wookiee still attached, over the bridge.I highly recommend either picking up the magazine or clicking over to the link to read through the article. DiGiacomo's fresh look at some of the issues video games face as they strive to recreate life on a screen are quite poetic at times and his take on the merging of Euphoria's AI and Digital Molecular Matter with the physics of Havok are alone worth the time. There are also plenty of screens and interesting images.
I'll leave you with this wonderful description of the process of making a video game, to hopefully convince you to go read the article:
To observe the men and women of LucasArts in action--aside from noting their propensity to wear their security badges on bright yellow lanyards--is to realise that the process of making a video game is really the fulfillment of French mathematician and philosopher René Descartes's dream of putting "the world into equation," in the words of LucasArts lead software engineer Cedrick Collomb. The Game Has Changed [Vanity Fair]

"Force Unleashed... ...has a plot twist "almost as good as the "I am your father" moment from Star Wars: Episode V"
WHAT? HE WAS HIS FATHER? OH MY GOD. How could you ruin this movie for me?!?! Surely you jest, I would have heard this quoted 6 billion times already if it were true.
P.S. Yes I'm kidding, although I haven't seen the movie, and yes Star Wars games RULE. I think this one has alot of great potential, ESPECIALLY with the Wiimote - it's what the console was born to do - Star Wars is to Wii as Halo is to Xbox, as Metal Gear is to PlayStation, as Pokemon is to GameBoy - so let's just hope that they continue to put lots of awesome effort into each and every version - technical beauty as good as Half-Life 2, a plot as good as KOTOR, and gameplay as good as Red Steel. (Ok, I was kidding about that last one.) Ok my P.S. is now twice as long as my main text. See you guys round.

I'm calling bullshit, the biggest bullshit you could call on these types of things. In any case, just allowing us to know that there will be an impossibly insane twist, pretty much rapes the whole thing altogether.
Second, there is just no freaking way that the game is long enough to produce such a twist, there just isn't enough time for a person to invest to get such a deep attachment to the story. Yeah sure, the Star Wars movies were only about 2-3 hours each, probably about 5 hours if you want to get technical on the whole twist timeline thing, whatever, but that's 5 hours of pure story.
This really should have been something they'd have wanted to keep extremely top secret until release or whenever all the major media outlets have spoiled it for everyone already; might, or might have made this game that much better, and it's already looking fucking incredible.

No but really, I wish they'd stop talking about the fucking DMM and Euphoria. Yeah, I get it, it's cool, when I kill puny enemies, they try not to die. Cool. But enough already, talk about the damn game some more. Anyway, could be good but nothing of the gameplay seems too exciting of the force powers. I mean, pushing enemies really far is cool and shooting them up with lightning is great but if that's it then... yeah...

The physics and procedural animation systems they keep touting for this look very nice. The ability to pull an ESB Vader and hurl anything not tied down (and a few things that are) at your opponent will be a big boost in cool over the small bits of random debris from the Jedi Knight games.
Any time the maker of a non-parody/comedy game touts the game being "over the top" as a /good/ thing, though, I start to get very leery.
I mean, pulling a Star Destroyer out of the sky? Hasn't the canon been bent over and railed on with a meat tenderizer enough already?

You know what was great about the "I am your Father" moment from Episode V?
You had no idea it was coming. It just happened, and your mind was blown. Announcing that your game (which is about 6 months away) has such a dramatic moment completely defeats purpose of putting such a set-piece in your story.
The reason the moment was so powerful was the surprise of it, not that you knew a surprise was in store for you and were satisfied with the end result.
Nice work there LucasArts, you've just set an expectation in the minds of gamers that you can't possibly achieve. Maybe if you coulda kept your mouths shut we'd all ooh and aah like we did over the Darth Revan bit in KOTOR.
Now that we know theres a surprise in store, you just ruined the surprise. Thanks.
@armchairnixon:
I agree w/you, but let's not kid ourselves into thinkin g Attack of the Clones or The Phantom Menace were good titles either. In comparison, this is almost an improvement...

@armchairnixon: I'll be picking it up because it looks graphically and technically more promising than a lot of titles this year already - and because it's Star Wars. I really want to feel the Force.

The game looks awesome, but I can't help thinking that "Force Unleashed" is still a rather weak title. I know they're trying to highlight their new technology, but I think the game showcases it well enough. I think the title should reflect the story in some way, not the technology behind it. I know in my case, I'll be picking up the game to broaden my understanding of the story, and the technology can help to bring that world more to life, but I think a game's title should reflect the story behind it and not how the story is told so much. Just my opinion, anyway.

@jollydwarf: You realize that a story is more than just the plot points. I would say the story/plot in the prequels was far more interesting than the original trilogy. The complex play of powers against each other, and how these al come together for an ultimate outcome, was really interesting. The execution was, for a lot of people, including me, very unsuccessful though.
I am less concerned about what this revelation is, as to how it is executed.
From what I have heard KOTOR 1 and 2 were, story-wise and execution, on par with the original series, and I enjoyed what I played of the Jedi Knight series.
I see no reason to assume, yet, it will be as bad fanfictiony as the prequels seemed (other than Lucas, I believe, is more involved with this and that can be taken as a bad thing?)

Vader supposedly was looking for an apprentice to over throw Palpatine, and had a few until Luke came around. Luke was to be his apprentice and both were to destroy Palpatine. It didn't really end that way, but Vader got what he wanted in the end.

At some point, you're going to run into a Jedi that you're supposed to kill, and that Jedi is in turn going to tell you about your past, about how the Empire killed your parents*, and how Vader is just using you. This will all lead to the climatic boss battle of facing--you guessed it--Vader himself.
Of course, you can't kill him, per the events of the OT, so either he will barely escape when his 'health bar' reaches next-to-zero, or if they're really daring, the last moment of the game's final cutscene will be Vader's red blade descending towards your first-person view--then black, then credits. But we all know that won't happen.
Man, this game is going to suck. Even if the gameplay is decent enough, the sullen teen-and-manchild-approved sub-fanfic narrative is going to make it excruciating to advance through.

@JasonR: They might be referring to that because, from my Star warsy friend the general consensus is that the Emperor caused Dart Vader to be born and this is sneekily hinted at in the films.
@photoboy: Did they not say that this was going to be the next big thing in the SW universe and that this game would receive the amount of hype and treatment that a film would get?
I don't get the violence 'tone down' comment. This would make sense with the amount of violence shown in the films. The Lightsaber itself produces very clean cauterized goreless wounds. And the rest of the forcey powers seem pretty ungorey as well, unless you're sending an object through someone with this power or impaling someone on something. I think that's all he means.

As long as they have the ability to have dismemberments via a code or some such thing, I'll be happy. I loved turning on lightsaber dismemberment in Jedi Outcast, and watching as I lopped off heads and hands of those foolish enough to face me.
To bad they had to tone it down, though.
But hey, it looks good, and I haven't said that about a Star Wars game since the Dark Forces series. Will definitely pick this up.

@cooler_dood: Haven't shown any bossfights. I suspect that it's a type of deal where you cleave through fodder until you get to a boss or miniboss that has the same insane abilities as you.

Vader's apprentice is really just a figment of Vader's imagination (probably to fill in that dead wife, no friends, no family chasm).
That or Vader managed to manipulate those chlorine pools to create life, and thusly created the apprentice with mega powers (only to evidently lose the ability).

Why does Lucas Arts outright REFUSE to pake the post jedi, New Jedi Order or Even Lagacy of the force era into games.
I want to play as the solo kids, I want to play as Mara Jade. I want to shoot the Vong on somthing OTHER then an X-fighter. Please make this happen lucas

@The Konamunist: are you not familar with the history of First? a.k.a. First post? it may not be offensive, it may not be the most unintelligent, but it is among the most hated and annoying of posts. Even more annoyingly it's trendsetting. If you don't ban people who post "First" it's just a slippery slope until we get 3 people trying to post first which just leaves us with three posts each claiming 'First' which leads to some joker (more likely jokers) trying to double up on that and post "Fourth" and I think you see where this leads.

Maybe the apprentice is Luke's secret half brother. Vader has been around, you know.

@cooler_dood: Yeah cept Im just assuming that the reason why they made the power all insane looking was just to show off the tech.
Possibly by the end of the game your character will become that strong.
Kinda like in Jedi Knight where as you go along in the story you get stronger sorta deal.
I must admit the over the top power vids did work with catching folks attention.

@The Konamunist: Yeah I'm surprised that people haven't caught onto the rule yet, how do you get approved to comment and not know that "FIRST!" is obnoxious? Obviously it happens, maybe we need more "These are the Rules" type posts?

Actually, so far, this game's story if filled with plot holes the size of a Death Star. Hyped games and games that deliver are two different things completely.

god, i fear an ambitious story line in this game. if they imply even for a second in a twist that vader is directly or indirectly involved in the founding of the rebel alliance they will have officially ruined any compelling narrative arc to the star wars saga. this is supposed to be just a fun smashing things into other things game, don't ruin it!

Why would someone be banned for typing "First"? It is not offensive, and generally more intelligent than some of the comments I have seen on other articles...
But if there are rules, then I could understand.

I agree with Kyle, toning down violence for a rating is really weak. Especially considering that the rating does not affect sales as much as marketers would like to have us believe.

It must just be me, but I'm really not excited by a story set between episodes 3 and 4. I know it's an era that has never been explored before, but I can't imagine much happened. I mean they'd have made a film about it if it was that exciting right? ;)

I about had a nerdgasm when I started to hear about all the cool tech crap they're doing with this game. Lucasarts has been asleep at the wheel for nigh on ten years, it's good to see them getting back to work.
I'm just pissed that there's no PC version. I want to mod the HELL out of this.
