THE iDOLM@STER Makes Wii Cameo
Posted by Brian Ashcraft at 1:00 AM on February 15, 2008
It's not only nerds that love virtual idol sim THE iDOLM@STER, Bandai Namco loves it, too! The Japanese publisher has worked the game's logo and/or characters into its other titles like Ace Combat 6 and Taiko no Tatsujin. The latest title to get an iDOLM@STER nod is Bandai Namco's Wii title Family Ski, which boasts THE iDOLM@STER skis. It's only a matter of time before THE iDOLM@STER becomes Bandai Namco's corporate character. Stop now, before it's too late!

@cybereality: They could dub it the Sega IDOLM@STER System.
Yes, I'm replying to my own post, but it was too funny to let go.

@fuchikoma: OMG! The Saturn was like the best console ever. People just don't understand. If Sega brought out a new console with a bunch of dating sims and eroge I guarentee they would turn a profit the next quarter.

@ara: More likely to 765, as that is the name of the production company. Those numbers are actually reference to na-mu-ko: Namco.

@dip:
Uh... you do realize that's not official merchandise, right? It's not like the 360 is some bastion of console porn games in Japan. Those died with the Saturn(?)
So you can claim open mindedness all you like, but if you'd "rather drive a nail through your hand" than play a game because one creepy fan took it too far, then I've got some bad news for you...

Yeah, that guy's sad,but that doesn't really have anything to do with the game. Today on Kotaku you can see someone trying to undress a Mai doll, but noone's going to say a wierd fan makes King of Fighters a bad game,it's a great one. I'm sure everyone here thinks Empire Strikes Back is an awesome movie, and everyone here knows some really lame people who are Star Wars fans. No matter what the game/movie/whatever is,some fans are going to go over the top creepy with it.
There's "24" fan fiction out there.

@DIP: I suppose I did come off as a little haughty with my post. I assure you that I meant no offense. However, more often than not, epecially in reference to Japanese games that lend themselves to Japanese interests (cooking mama, taiko no tatsujin, katamari, and some reviews of Blue Dragon and Lost Odyssey), I find that that western perspectives of those games are unfortunately unfair and a little ignorant.
Your point about the "Japanese manchild" is well taken. Eroge involving children offends me also. However, acknowledging and accepting that eroge games and media like that (loli) exist (unfortunately) and are a part of the otaku culture is an important step in being a little more open minded IMO.
As you stated earlier, and I couldn't agree more, "whatever floats your boat". However I'm not going to harangue or attack anyone who enjoys the consumption of that kind of media either (and I'm not suggesting anyone has on this post).
Regardless, it seems we'll have to agree to disagree on iDOLM@STER. To each their own, however I think that iDOLM@STER would be welcomed with many open arms, especially those who identify with otaku (sub)culture here in the west.

@M15ant470p3: I'm open minded. But I would still rather drive a nail through my hand than play something like that. I used to watch some anime (see avatar) but I've pretty much outgrown it. It's pathetic seeing a japanese manchild (a truly fitting word in this case) unwrap his Xbox 360 with a drawing of a naked girl who looks about 11 years old.
I don't think this has anything to do with being open or close minded. Unless of course you think that involves accepting cartoon pedophilia and being socially devoid.
Not trying to troll here, but that is my honest opinion. Whatever floats your boat... but don't make it sound like all the rest of us have some sort of problem for not embracing the otaku lifestyle.

iDolM@STER puts the player in the role of the manager of a J-pop singer group. The appeal of this game is broad, but I don't think it's geared specifically to appease or sate a fetish. The game is NOT eroge. iDOLM@STER appeals to me as a western gamer because I'm immersed in Japanese animation and have been since my childhood. I can appreciate the art, sim-esque game play, the music, as much as the cute characters the player is in charge of. I would be incredibly happy to see it come stateside. However, based on some of the comments listed previous to mine, the liklihood of this title becoming popular enough to make the move overseas is next to nil. Openmindedness of my fellow western gaming counterparts is equally as nil. Equally depressing on all accounts.

@PJK: Sorry to disappoint, but the game is extremely tame. There's far, far worse out there on the PS2.

As far as I can gather for those still wondering, iDOLM@STER is a game that legitimises itself by giving the pretence of controlling the careers of a selection of scantily clad pop-stars in their early teens to early 20's, while really being wank material for paedophiles.

Well, Idolm@ster has become a multi-media entity by now. Yeah the 360 game is popular (well, as popular as a Japanese 360 title can be), but it was first an arcade game and has around 2 dozen music and drama CDs. Then there's the anime DVDs, toys, and all sorts of other wackiness.

I'm still not really sure what iDOLM@STER is... I know it's some Japanese 360 game... but, I have no idea what it's about or why it's so popular, or why it's making appearances in all these games.
