The Whispered World Revealed
Posted by Mike Fahey at 8:30 AM on February 20, 2008
First announced back on Halloween of last year with a whimsical greetings card, German developer Daedalic Entertainment is finally ready to show us exactly what their upcoming point-and-click PC adventure game The Whispered World is made of. The game follows the young clown Sadwick, searching for meaning in his life with his pet worm Spot. the story promises to mesh fairy-tale whimsy with melancholic undertones to create an epic fantasy story, and nothing says epic fantasy adventure like gorgeous, hand-painted backgrounds. The only problem I have with the screenshots so far? There are only three of them. More please.

Nice one, I love point and clicks! Hope it gets good reviews...
Also, it would be awesome to have native 1920x1200 graphics!

Holy crap, this just reminded me of King's Quest, Quest for glory, Echo the dolphin and other Sierra point and clickers back in the day. Those were a blast back in the day and I wouldn't mind trying it out again with this game.

Hires point n click adventure in 2d? I don't notice any 3d geometry and everything fits well. I bet the Lucasarts adventure fans are totally drooling over this. I am.

Point and click? A game that stunningly, heart-wrenchingly gorgeous?
Baby you're all that I want
When you're lyin' here in my arms
I'm findin' it hard to believe
We're in heaven!
And love is all that I need
And I found it there in your heart
It isn't too hard to see
We're in heaven!
Where the hell's that coming from!? Is that Bryan Adams?
I've been waitin' for so long
For something to arrive
For love to come along
Now our dreams are comin' true!
It is! It is Bryan Adams! Fuck me!

Here's a little preview of Whispered World (the article was translated from Adventure Treff):

As for A New Beginning, if you do their website, it says it will be on the Wii and DS. Here's another preview of that game as well:

They're both gorgeous looking games with cool premises (not a rehash of old themes like those that have been seen in some more recent AGs).

Love point and click adventure games. They are the only things that can get me back to PC gaming at times (since I sit on a PC all day at work now).
But, won't this, and the other Point 'n' Click by the same developer be in German? IF it gets localized, won't it take another several months, and suffer the same flaws as other recent non-English games have had?

@Aeralindor: Oh why did you have to mention Loom? :( That game still makes me giggle uncontrollably and get all weepy within the space of 10 minutes.
As much as all of the other adventure classics (see: Sierra/LucasArts) had their charms and some quality writing (especially with the funny), Loom was one of the only ones with any real pathos.

I love that Point'n'Clicks are making a comeback. Or at least trying to.
Lucas Arts SCUMM games were amazing, Zack & Wiki was awesome.. and all of the Sam & Max's have been pretty fantastic.
And of course I'm a fan of all the DS ones, like Phoenix Wright, Hotel Dusk, etc...
I'm just hoping the puzzles are as good as these visuals. I really dig this style... but these games are really only fun when they have very clever puzzle design.

That looks beautiful. Incidentially, I still go back and play Monkey Island 1, 2, CMI, Loom, Day of the Tentacle, etc. and there is nothing bad about them except the length when you know the solutions to all the puzzles. The games are just far too short once you know the answers sadly. Great games none the less. I'm very interested in this game.

Considering how games like these sell nowadays, expect those screenshots to be the only backgrounds you'll see in the release version.
Just keeping it real, that's all...

Methinks people remember the past with a bit too much nostalgic fondness and not quite enough "Wait a minute, that sucked!"
Or, to be fair, at least "Wait a minute, that wasn't really especially good."
Anyway, if nothing else, it'll be different. Commence the XBLA/PSN port or be lost to darkness.

@Behonkiss: I'd like to see it hit more consoles myself. The Wii, PS3 (with the mouse support), 360 would be nice. I'm not really understanding why you'd want to put it only on the PC at this point, when the adventure-style titles have been reborn lately more on the console settings. Leave it on the PC, sure, but make sure as many people as possible can enjoy it.
