This Is Why Civilization Revolution On Wii Was Canned
Posted by Luke Plunkett at 2:41 PM on February 5, 2008
We know Civilization Revolution has been canned for the Wii. We just didn't know why. Do now! Speaking with MTV's Patrick Klepek, Firaxis programmer Scott Lewis has revealed that, because the game was originally planned for the PS3 & 360 - with Wii and DS versions a money-making afterthought - the team couldn't find the time or resources to scrape up the new art assets and code a Wii version would have required (the PS3 & 360 are sharing assets, as well as being the lead platforms, while the DS version is cheap as chips to develop). That's not to say the project's entirely dead, though, as Lewis says the Wii version may be revived if the other versions do well.

@YodaTuna: Read the post? The game was underway on "next-gen consoles" before the Wii became the latest big thing.

Great, now the high costs of developing on the PS3/360 are starting to hurt the Wii. They should have devoted the initial money to the Wii version, and ported to the others.

This is the Wii though,~90% of its games fit that description.

Hey somebody tell fraxis to make the PS3 version work with remote play. It's not to intense so the lag would be ok.

Seems like a good idea, ignoring the system with the highest penetration. Even when Nintendo is #1, they're still treated like crap. 3rd parties claim that their games don't sell on Nintendo systems. Maybe if they actually put some effort and marketing into these games they would. Idiots.

Posted 3:04 PM 5/2/08
I wonder how much of it also was due to the amount of space on the system memory the game would have taken. I remember SimCity 2000 taking up something like 6 blocks on my memory card for Playstation for one city. The game saves on this could have had the potential to take up more space than a person would be willing to use on one game.

I'm actually glad they canned it, if that was their attitude towards it. As little more than a cash-in, something tells me they would've probably nixed any actual online multiplayer, and tossed out a poorly-thought out interface if they'd of forced it out, since they had been working on the other systems specifically to the point when the other two systems were 'added'.

@Irenicus-the one and only: Without a doubt, I'm going to buy this one, it just looks too much fun to pass up and despite the possibility of being a "dumbed down" version of the game from the PC, I have a feeling this would be quite worthwhile.

@gmc: Yes, it is nice to see them being honest (the mistake was announcing it in the first place) but, again, it's not entirely their fault because they were caught up in the PS3/60 thing without realising that Wii would be a success. And incidentally, PS3/60 still has about 8 million more users than Wii worldwide (and will probably always remain higher when treated as a single platform, which it basically is).
Hopefully this kind of admission means that if they do develop a Wii game it will be done properly, not thrown together on the cheap. Not holding my breath though :)

what does this say about the attitude of this games publishers/developers. It says "wii games are hanging on the edge of our budget, this one was just too crap to sell, but future, improved crap will be made"
So, crap confirmed for the wii by publishers then?
Nice to see them being honest for once.

Look,I'm not going to start a console war, but this is what happens when you make a console with a weird control scheme and outdated hardware. You Wii people should have known that the system was going to be good for Nintendo franchises and shovelware.
If the Wii port took any time away from development and made the 360/PS3 versions one iota inferior,I'm all for this decision.

making a game isn't cheap, they say if it does well they will keep working on it. if it doesn't do well (I don't think it will go well with the hardcore as it seems a very "pc" game) no money for it...

@blurayforever143: I just don't understand your argument here. Are you saying the PS3 and 360 are eventually going to be outsell the Wii because those system will offer more original IPs?
If that's really the case, I'm perplexed. If you look at historical sales data, you'll quickly notice that franchise games generally are more profitable that original IPs.

@Falconfire: But who in the world wants the PS2 ports of Call of Duty and Burnout in comparison to the more expansive 360/PS3 versions? And Virtua Tennis never came out, and in all the interviews I've read, they've pretty much made it obvious that DMC4 isn't possible on PS2 without changing the gameplay mechanics.
Also, Virtua Tennis full console games have never been on any system except the Dreamcast and PS3/360.

@tickmenanny: I never said the new games aren't there or going to be there, but they don't define the reason the Wii sells out..."No More Heroes" and "Zack and Wiki" won't even sell half of what Wii fit or Wii sports [in Japan] sell.

@blurayforever143: Are you being serious here? Nintendo is perhaps the most secret developer out there, they surely have plenty up their sleeves in the next 12 months. There's a new Kirby, new Animal Crossing, Wii Music, and Disaster. Plus I'm sure we can all anticipate some big game announcements at E3. How can you honestly believe Nintendo's not going to have another AAA title until the next Mario?

Uh, I didn't mean "actual video games" as in "Wii games aren't video games", I meant in terms of the "console war"....the lifespan of the "next gen consoles" and the actual games that will be coming out for them. When Fable 2 and Halo Wars for 360 and FF XIII and Gran Turismo are hitting the PS3, don't you think it'll become pretty obvious what's not only the graphical limit, but gameplay limit, of the Wii as well?
Someone else said it here, that Nintendo released all their big games in one year [Mario Galaxy, Zelda, Metroid 3, Smash Brothers] just so that they could overlook at the gamer and market Wii fit for two years. Honestly, name me the next big nintendo game...Mario Kart, and then it's over until the next Mario or the next Zelda...which probably won't be until the end of the Wii's life cycle.

you know it pisses me off that these developers cant look past fucking graphics. the whole POINT of Civ back in the day was the complex gameplay, not pretty pictures. If they had focused on that instead of the overpriced prettiness of the other systems they could have made a Civ game I would actually buy since the last decent one (Civ 2)
Oh well their loss.

I am terribly frustrated by this. Wii games should not be cash cow ports. It's completely ridiculous how a majority of the Wii games available are cheesy, terrible ports that do not appeal to the hardcore crowd at all. First of all, heavily ported games are usually not worth buying in the first place and second, IF one of these ports is worth buying, those who know gaming know to buy it for the 360 or PS3 because the Wii version will be some crappy, gimmiky, waggle filled clone. Third party games developed ground up for the Wii that developers care about and put time and effort into (No More Heroes, Zack and Wiki) are tremendous and very fun to play, however these are "sparkling diamonds in a dark, depressing sea of vomit". Developers need to realize this and put more effort into their Wii games. Ok I'm done, sorry for the lecture.

This might be what changes the "console war" apart from the mainstream sector [the mini game lovers who actually buy plastic tennis rackets and golf clubs for their wii remotes]
I mean, think of it, what does this article say? It pretty much says "we had to stop making this game for the Wii because it wouldn't look, sound, or play anything at all like the real thing" And the same could be said of Devil May Cry, of Call of Duty, of Virtua Tennis, and of Burnout..there's multiplatform games that just aren't possible on the Wii without being scaled down in every single aspect [even gameplay]
Once you get to the point where it becomes obvious that there's games you just can't play on the Wii, it'll be completely between the 360 and PS3 only. Sure, the Wii will stay on top because of that certain demographic..but in terms of actual video games and the long term, it'll be Sony and Microsoft to the very end..which is good for pretty much anyone...360 owners, PC gamers, and even Sony fanboys as myself.
