THQ Get A Little Chatty About Red Faction III
Posted by Luke Plunkett at 6:02 PM on February 6, 2008
Although we've known another Red Faction game has been coming since last August, a conference call held by THQ earlier today has confirmed a few more details. For the first time it's been referred to as Red Faction III, no doubt upsetting spinoff and prequel fans the world over, while it was also announced that series veterans Volition will be back on development duties. The game will be appearing any time between April and next March, and will be available on 360, PS3 and PC.

I loved both Red Factions and still play Red Faction II with my buddies when they come over. We have custom bots which are maxed out and have played over 100000 matches. Still a game I love to play even though the PS2 getting old. Can't wait for some widescreen RFIII.

the first Red Faction was the best- almost EVERYTHING was destructible- I remember making my own tunnles that lead into enemy base, and shoot em from behind- haah'
such fun

The first red faction was fun, mustly for the multiplayer. Destructible everything was awesome.
Red faction 2, not so much fun.
I hope Volition can bring it out of the dumpster.

@Kruel:
agreed, I'd much rather see Volition spend their time doing Freespace 3 than Red Faction 3.

Red Faction 1 was fairly ugly graphics wise but fun.
RF 2 had a horrendous art style that was tough to take seriously(it's tough to take seriously Jason Stratham when he looks like he fell out of a Saturday morning cartoon show), but had some very fun/varied levels that unfortunately you don't see enough of in FPSs. COD4 comes to mind.
If the art style and characters mature and they throw in a bit of Descent and/or Freespace style to mix things up, I would give it some attention and dollars.

Screw RF, I want Freespace3! I never much cared for the RF games... the geomod tech was cool, but for an FPS it was subpar.
On the other hand I did like the sub levels in RF2. Volition should make an underwater game... go back to their Descent roots.

In RF1, the destructible environments were fun as hell to play around with. On one of the maps, you could literally dig a tunnels through the walls with the rocket launcher. And I'm not talking 'shoot once and come out the other side'. These were thick, THICK walls in which you could carve a maze if you wanted. It was awesome.
More than just destructible environments, I want smart level design and common sense. If a door is locked, and you have a rocket launcher in hand, you should be able to blast through it (unless it's an actual 'blast door' and looks like it's made to withstand that sort of thing). Same thing goes for walls.... and cars..... and chairs....

@Shindokie:
to be honest it was a pretty standard shooter. The terrain/structure deformation aspect really wasn't worthy of the hype it got.
The multiplayer wasn't cutting edge or anything but the cool weapons made for some fun games.
Red Faction II was goofy (they somehow managed to shoe-horn zombies into what is a pretty straightforward sci-fi game) but it was fast and fun.

With so many games incorporating Havok physics, I'm not so sure how much of a draw destructible environments are these days. I doubt we're going to see fully destructible environments for gameplay reasons; it'd be far too easy to break the progression of a level unless the design kept that in mind from the ground up, and even then it's a tough task.
@Shindokie: RF1 was good for it's time, but doesn't hold up today, RF2 was sub-par in almost every way.

Sweet mother of GOD, yes! I loved both games, and can't wait to play the third.
We were promised a destructible environment FPS even since before the PS3 was released. It's good to see SOMEONE deliver the goods.

@NitrousO:
Well, Tarr Chronicles is no X3, and X3 is no Freelancer, and all are no Freespace.
What Tarr Chronicles IS though, is a nice diversion, with good scale, nice radio chatter and small customisation.
New Freespace would be ace. You think in this day and age of spectacular graphics, a sumptuous space dogfighter would go down a treat. I'm getting all tumescent thinking of massive fleet battles during a solar storm or something, or brilliant starfields...
Either way, depending on how much you love your space fighter games, NitrousO, you may find something to love in Tarr Chronicles.

RF1 was awesome, never played much of RF2. Hopefully they expand the geo-mod this time so that the majority of the environments are destructible instead of just select areas. I remember in multiplayer shooting a hole in a wall so long it took about 30 seconds to reach the end of it. I always wondered why more games didn't make use of this or similiar tech.
on a somewhat related note...Battlefield BC tech looks quite good but it's much cooler when damage is dynamic and after watching several videos on it you could see that there were preset destructive zones as the broken pieces were all the same

Volition should just make Freespace games (stupid loose ends of Freespace 2) or a spin-off if they can't get hold of the license.

I never finished RF1(still have the save file though!). I thought the destructible environment (as touted) would be cool, but was a bit disappointed that it wasn't as destructible as I hoped it would be. Oh well.

RF 1 sucked, RF 2 sucked!
The whole "it" thing about RF1 was about the fight for Mars and destructible levels, but they messed it up. When I first heard about RF1 I was thinking Total Recall fps whit a jack tool that both could be used as a melee weapon and a tool to create new paths to complete the level, or similar stuff.
Boy was I disappointed. RF2 was just a generic fps.
If they do good on RF1 goals it will be good, if not RF3 will just be another generic shooter, I think.

I played the first game. It was pretty good, but as
for the "destructible environment" shtick, I was able
to do a little of that (namely dirt walls) in a Sega
Saturn game called Ghen War.

I had so much fun with RF1 that I bought 2 on release day without seeing any reviews or gameplay vids first. I played through the short story/single player, gave multiplayer ample chances to prove itself and then put it on my shelf. It sat there for five years and four months and last week, I sold it to Microplay for $8. Which was $3 more than I got for Double Agent.

@Atheist Jew: Considering the PS2's meager memory, the ability to actively destroy that much of the environment is a feat itself.

The problem is that while RF 1's geo-mod technology was neato, they only used it effectively in the actual game about 3 times. To blow holes around a locked door, to destroy a tank, and to bring down a structure. That's it. Other than that it was a pretty standard FPS. I hope the new RF actually makes decent use of the cool tech.

Man the year after RF2 came out me and my friends went and picked it up for cheap. That spring break we spent at LEAST 60 hours playing that game with a multitap and the bots on the hardest difficulty. I think during one session we played 15 hours straight. It was awesome.

I loved the first one - it was amazing on the 64. The second one I played on PS2 and liked it far more than most - I enjoyed the single player story and thought that it brought a lot of interesting new gameplay mechanics to the table that first one never had. Of course, it did kind of downplay the mechanic of the first game, nearly the series main selling point back then... the multiplayer was also highly entertaining on both. That laser cannon that saw/shot through walls - awesome.

Multiple endings that detailed what happened to each character (with funny semi-cg), shitloads of gibs, awesome cheats, a bunch of interesting weapons and missions, and extremely destructible multiplayer and singleplayer environments. Multiplayer that was like Timesplitters mixed with UT but better.
Sweet.

MEP. I loved the first game, not so much the second one. Maybe they'll make the controls actually playable compared to RF2. Some how I'm not too sure on how I even beat that game.
RF story was good and making my own doors was great.
RF2 only good thing was the graphics upgrade :P.
Lets hope that RF3 will not only have a graphics upgrade but that the story and just plain everything is great.
I miss RF multiplayer, wish they had it for the ps2 :P
