THQ Makes Red Faction: Guerrilla Official
Posted by Mike Fahey at 9:20 AM on February 21, 2008
Not the best day to officially announce any game without the word 'Gears' in the title, but I suppose that's what magazines are for. Today THQ makes the next-generation debut of Red Faction official, announcing Red Faction: Guerrilla in development for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and Windows PC. The third game in the series returns us to Mars 50 years after the events of the original game, with a terra-formed red planet ready to be taken apart piece by piece by the player. The focus on destruction returns, along with an all-new third-person perspective that seems like an odd choice to me, but Volition President Mike Kulas seems confident enough.
"With a new 3rd person perspective, a full cover system that allows for guerrilla style tactics and a diverse planet to explore we're excited to revitalise the gripping world of Red Faction for high-definition platforms."Red Faction: Guerrilla is due out sometime in 2009.
Revolution Returns To Mars In THQ's Groundbreaking Open World Shooter Red Faction®: GuerrillaTMThird-Person Action-Shooter Re-Defines Destruction and Open-World Game-Play
AGOURA HILLS, Calif. February 20, 2008 - THQ Inc. (NASDAQ: THQI) today announced that Volition, Inc.'s critically acclaimed Red Faction® franchise will make its open-world, next-generation debut with Red Faction®: Guerrilla™. Set 50 years after the climactic events of the original Red Faction, this third-person open-world action-shooter will return to Mars and once again re-define the limits of destruction-based game-play. Red Faction: Guerrilla is currently in development for Microsoft Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system from Microsoft, Sony PLAYSTATION® 3 computer entertainment system, and Windows-based PC, and is scheduled to ship in THQ's fiscal year 2009.
"Red Faction is one THQ's most successful and critically acclaimed original franchises to date, with a huge global base of loyal fans waiting to join the new revolution," said Brad Carraway, director of global brand management, THQ. "With the game's unique pairing of true physics-based destruction, fast-paced guerrilla warfare style combat, and a massive world to explore - Red Faction: Guerrilla will redefine the limits of open-world gaming."
"Red Faction: Guerrilla expands the signature destruction elements of the series and pushes the boundaries of next-gen gaming on a massive, terra-formed Mars where gamers can literally tear down the enemy EDF presence brick by brick," said Mike Kulas, president of Volition, Inc. "With a new 3rd person perspective, a full cover system that allows for guerrilla style tactics and a diverse planet to explore we're excited to revitalize the gripping world of Red Faction for high-definition platforms."
About Red Faction: Guerrilla
Red Faction: Guerrilla is a 3rd person, open-world action shooter set on Mars, 50 years after the events of the original Red Faction. Players will take the role of an insurgent fighter with the newly re-established Red Faction movement as they battle for liberation from the oppressive Earth Defense Force. Throughout their fight for freedom, players will carve their own path, wreaking havoc across the vast, open-world environment of Mars, from the desolate mining outpost of Parker to the gleaming EDF capital city of Eos. Utilizing improvised weapons, explosives and re-purposed mining equipment and vehicles, Red Faction: Guerrilla allows players to tear through fully destructible environments in an unforgiving Martian landscape swarming with EDF forces, Red Faction resistance fighters, and the downtrodden settlers caught in the cross-fire. Red Faction: Guerrilla will also feature a robust multiplayer component, including several modes focused on destruction-based gameplay. Currently in development for Microsoft Xbox 360, Sony PLAYSTATION 3, and Windows PC, Red Faction: Guerrilla is expected to ship to retailers worldwide in THQ's fiscal year 2009.

@BANGBANGBLAH
Well let me ask you this - where did all cover systems before Gears get inspired from? Point is, it's a system that's been used enough times independant of any hyped up game like Gears to point the "copy" finger at. Sure you can connect that Gears sold well so developers would want to get in on the cover action. However, is it reasonable to say ALL games are copying Gears?
Portal came out after Prey and they both use a portal concept, but no one would dream of saying Portal copied Prey. Just because a game used a feature previousley doesn't mean that all games after it are coyping that game; just because it's the easies possibility doesn't make it a fact.
If the gameplay at large was indicative of Gears, you'd have more of a case. Red Faction 3 only has this one feature in common, so I just don't see the 'this is fact' mentallity. Plausible? I guess. Fact? Not in the least.

The final boss in Red Faction 3 was awesome. You go into the guy's penthouse office and the guy jumps in a mechsuit and starts shooting missiles at you. You try to hide behind the wall but it gets blown away until there's only a small metal pillar to hide behind. That was awesome.

@Fyren: +2 for remember their hyped marketing bull about fully destructable environments!!! I remember the dev talk with RF1 that mentioned just firing rocket after rocket to get to the end of a level by blowing a straight hole through everything.
They were dirty liars then, but the game was still fun, and I am kinda jazzed about this one.

@Garro: Well, right. But games like Red Faction aren't taking inspiration from Killswitch and Syphon Filter. They're taking the concept from Gears. I agree with you, but popular opinion typically wins out, and Gears is definitely owning the limelight when in comes to third person shooters as of late.

@Samuraidino: How do you figure Gears is responsible for "popularising" a system you yourself admit has been around in plenty of games for years. Second of all, define "increased dramatically." Besides R6 Vegas, RF 3, and Army of Two, what else has there been.

Okay, so:
A. Gears becomes one of the first major next gen titles to have been released and gets a ridiculous amount of hype thanks to Cliffy B and his 'Unreal' history with games.
B. The resulting lack of Next Gen games (and systems) forces a significantly larger amount of sales than there should have been.
C. And because it's made such a massive amount of money, it's getting credit for a game mechanic that's been around for quite a bit longer than the game itself....
It just ain't right....

Posted 1:32 PM 23/2/08
@Garro: It may not be the first game to incorporate it,but its certainly the one thats responsible for popularising it.Since it appeared in gears the amount of games boasting a "full cover system" has increased dramatically.
Hell i can throw in the game second sight from many moons ago to the list of games that had a cover system before gears, but then my crappy little joke would be made much more crappy (red sight or second faction just doesnt have the same ring to it don't you think?)

Did the six of you just start playing video games when Gears came out? Seriousley. Gears wasn't the first game with cover, and you all KNOW that if it wasn't so hyped up it would only be renowned as a mediocre game with a good mutliplayer, and even that's debatable by a lot of people (for lack of game modes).
It's like what Pylon_Trooper said, "...from Gears?! Come on, the Syphon Filter series and a slew of shooters from the PS2 were third-person. Kill.Switch was an underrated little game, where we saw the cover/blindfire concept used effectively.
Syphon Filter: Dark Mirror on PSP makes a compelling arguement, as do the console versions of SOCOM"

Nice.
I loved the original (on the pc), well... it was a mixed bag... I loved the concept, the geo-mod, the guns, basically most of it.... hated the fact that so little of it was spent in the mine (hated it with a passion, since the mine was what Red Faction was, really, all about (not really, i suppose, but anyone who likes this game should know what im talking about.)
Glad to hear that its returning to the mine routes. Can't say I cared too much for RF2. Lets hope it is mostly in environments akin to the best part of RF (the beggining).
Well see how the third-person goes. Cant say im sad for it (nor am i glad)... its not what i was expecting. (hope you can carry more thebn 2-3guns. Unrealistic? yes. is hammerspace awesome? certainly. Its a videogame.
I still want to see a game that can do cover properly in the first-person. I can envision it; but I have a feeling to make it excellent you would need some crazy animation. (think Uncharted; but more organic (I did only play the demo at my buddy's so i may not be being fair. It wasnt what i was imaginig, though. It did not feel as realistic as i thought it would have.
Another thought: they should remake the first one on the Wii (with more mine-age) and allow for balence board dodge support (like police 911, in the arcade).
That would be killer.
Yeah, also, the destruction works well with the cover.
Isnt that what they are doing for gta4, also?

I hope they go back to what made the first RE special. Third person, cover, and an open world sounds like a radical shift but, who knows. Maybe they'll be geniouses with contextual events. Either way, I'm probably going to buy this.

3rd person? Meh. What a crazy move. The first Red Faction did it for me with a split-screen multiplayer level with 2 opposing bases, where you could fire rockets at about 85% from the ground (i.e. near vertical) and they would come back down in a barrage at your opponent's base. This made for some crazily tactical gaming. In the second one, the same tactic did not work as they would hit a "solid sky" and not come down. Shame.
I will always prefer 1st person games to 3rd person as they feel more "real". Disappointed with this approach, am I.

@NotAZombie: Negative, only the one you see above is real. I'm pretty sure that was already covered in another post a couple days ago. But hey, I could be wrong. It's a shame they moved to third person, I was part of a Red Faction community for the PC for a good 5 years (it's still running now, but hardly any of us play the game itself anymore). We were looking forward to getting everyone back together in Red Fation: Guerrilla, but I guess that won't be happening now since it's not an FPS.

First Red faction was awesome, Second was a huge disappointment (the only reason I played the whole thing was because you could play on PS2 with keyboard/mouse.
And now they are going 3rd person? They better squeeze every bit of power out of these systems for the geo-mod if they want to save this one. Breaking down a wall in real time with a hammer might make me play it.
