THQ Mixes Genres With Band Mashups
Posted by Mike Fahey at 2:40 AM on February 8, 2008
Sure the interface looks a little familiar, but THQ's Band Mashups for the Nintendo Wii certainly brings something new to the table - music switching. The game includes 30 chart-topping songs from the past four decades, each recorded in five different musical styles: rock, funk/hip-hop, country, marching band and Latin. You choose your favorite style and battle your way through the single-player campaign or against a friend, with the musical style of any song you are playing switching in mid-tune to reflect who is winning the match. The game also promises an original music combat experience, with over 70 weapons including a sniper violin and of course - the flamethrower guitar. I am marking this down as a tentative "must buy" on my list for the concept alone, pending the final track list. Musical combat is only as good as the songs you are fighting with. Look for Band Mashups to hit stores this April.
THQ's Band MashupsTM Bringing Musical Warfare to WiiTM in April 2008AGOURA HILLS, Calif.-THQ Inc. (NASDAQ:THQI) today announced Band Mashups™ is scheduled to bring the ultimate band battle to Wii™ in April 2008. Featuring 150 tracks and five distinct musical styles: rock, funk/hip-hop, country, marching band and Latin, Band Mashups combines fast-paced combat with customizable bands in the fight for musical supremacy, fully utilizing the Wii Remote™ controller's highly intuitive control scheme to deliver a unique game-play experience.
"Band Mashups takes an innovative approach to the rhythm/action genre by blending music and combat in the ultimate battle of the bands," said Randy Shoemaker, global brand director, THQ. "Using a rhythm based game-play mechanic, the game delivers 70 over-the-top musical weapons and utilizes the Wii Remote's functionality to deliver a completely original musical combat experience. Fighting with a sniper violin or flamethrower guitar is something gamers should definitely look forward to."
About Band Mashups
Band Mashups is the first time a musical "mashup" game has been delivered on Wii, allowing players to battle it out with their preferred musical style. Band Mashups features both an exciting two player versus mode and an extensive single-player campaign where players take on the role of one of eleven bands trying to topple the nefarious big boss Mr. Hong and take control of the faraway city of New Cadenza. Band Mashups introduces the innovative concept of "music switching," putting the player winning the battle in control of the style of music both players hear. When an opponent turns the tide of battle, the music changes as well, switching between different music styles. Band Mashups features 30 classic and modern chart-topping hits from over the last four decades, all of which have been recorded in five different styles - (rock, funk/hip-hop, country, Latin and marching band) - for the game, resulting in a total of 150 unique, playable recordings.

This looks a lot like a rapping game Sega made for arcades a while ago. I don't remember the name, but it featured two turntables and a slider which switched which one was being used.

There's always a high chance for me to buy it when it's a music game. We'll see what happens as it gets closer to release.

This looks exactly like what the Guitar controller Harmonix made was patented for. [www.freepatentsonline.com]
"Although described below in connection with a simulated guitar controller, the game controller may simulate any of a wide variety of musical instruments such as percussion instruments (including cymbals, bell lyre, celeste, chimes, crotales, glockenspiel, marimba, orchestra bells, steel drums, timpani, vibraphone, xylophone, bass drum, crash cymbal, gong, suspended cymbal, tam-tam, tenor drum, tom-tom, acme siren, bird whistle, boat whistle, finger cymbals, flex-a-tone, mouth organ, marching machine, police whistle, ratchet, rattle, sandpaper blocks, slapstick, sleigh bells, tambourine, temple blocks, thunder machine, train whistle, triangle, vibra-slap, wind machine, wood block, agogo bells, bongo drum, cabaca, castanets, claves, conga, cowbell, maracas, scraper, timbales, kick drum, hi-hat, ride cymbal, sizzle cymbal, snare drum, and splash cymbal), wind instruments (including piccolo, alto flute, bass flute, contra-alto flute, contrabass flute, subcontrabass flute, double contrabass flute, piccolo clarinet, sopranino clarinet, soprano clarinet, basset horn, alto clarinet, bass clarinet, contra-alto clarinet, contrabass clarinet, octocontra-alto clarinet, octocontrabass clarinet, saxonette, soprillo, sopranino saxophone, soprano saxophone, conn-o-sax, clar-o-sax, saxie, mezzo-soprano saxophone, alto saxophone, tenor saxophone, baritone saxophone, bass saxophone, contrabass saxophone, subcontrabass saxophone, tubax, aulochrome, tarogato, folgerphone, contrabassoon, tenoroon, piccolo oboe, oboe d'amore, English horn, French horn, oboe de caccia, bass oboe, baritone oboe, contrabass oboe, bagpipes, bugle, cornet, didgeridoo, euphonium, flugelhorn, shofar, sousaphone trombone, trumpet, tuba, accordion, concertina, harmonica, harmonium, pipe organ, voice, bullroarer, lasso d'amore, whip and siren), other stringed instruments (including harps, dulcimer, archlute, arpeggione, banjo, cello, Chapman stick, cittern, clavichord, double bass, fiddle, slide guitar, steel guitar, harpsichord hurdy gurdy, kora, koto, lute, lyre, mandola, mandolin, sitar, ukulele, viola, violin, and zither) and keyboard instruments (including accordion, bandoneon, calliope, carillon, celesta, clavichord, glasschord, harpsichord, electronic organ, Hammond organ, pipe organ, MIDI keyboard, baby grand piano, electric piano, grand piano, janko piano, toy piano, upright piano, viola organista, and spinets)."
...Nowhere does it mention sniper violin, though.

@KaneTaker: There's no way to make that kind of game interesting, though, which is why Activision are complete idiots for even including it.
AI controlled Guitar Hero combatant! What a brilliant idea! Except that it's complete broken on more levels that one could possible fathom.

@dexterk03: Yeah man, I don't like rap and I hate dashboard confessional but for some reason Hands Down Ghandi makes it on the short list of my favorite songs.
It would be sweet if there was a free play mode where you have the ability to just screw around with songs. Having the option of recording those newfangled songs and posting them somewhere sounds like a huge selling point to me. It'll be interesting to see what sort of song list this game will tout.
