VC Update: Live or Die Edition
Posted by Mike Fahey at 2:40 AM on February 5, 2008
Two new games are landing on the Wii Virtual Console this week, and they leave me wondering if we should even continue doing this. While Operation Wolf for the NES (500 Points) and Columns III: Revenge of Columns for the Genesis (800 points) are both fine games and a worthy addition to any collection, they just don't strike me as worth taking up our (both mine and yours) valuable time in reporting. The question I present to you - our lovely readers - is this: Should we continue posting the Wii Virtual Console update every Monday morning, or save them for when a game that is particularly noteworthy comes out? I'm on the fence here personally. On one hand the whole thing seems rather dry, but I've seen weeks where you folks really get into reminiscing over your old favorites, which makes me happy. I've done nearly every one of these since the Wii launched back in 2006 - should I continue?
Wii-kly Update: Two New Classic Games Added to Wii Shop ChannelStep into two very different types of action this week. Either battle the bad guys to save hostages and preserve freedom or bury your opponents with magical jewels. Whatever you fancy, you'll need to be ready for a challenge: strategize as a fearless hero or manipulate special jewels to raise the crush bar. How do you plan to win today?
Two new classic games go live at 9 a.m. Pacific time. Nintendo adds new games to the Wii Shop Channel every Monday. Wii™ owners with a high-speed Internet connection can redeem Wii Points™ to download the games. Wii Points can be purchased in the Wii Shop Channel or at retail outlets. This week's new games are:
OPERATION WOLF™ (NES®, 1 player, Rated E10+ for Use of Tobacco and Violence,
500 points): A group of desperate terrorists is keeping hostages in their
jungle fortress. As a member of the elite tactical squad Operation Wolf, you
must invade their hideout, destroy their operations, and get the hostages out
alive! Maneuver through a series of missions and fight off soldiers, patrol
boats, helicopters, and more. The further you progress, the more enemies
you'll have to defeat and the harder they'll try to stop you in your tracks
(going so far as tossing knives and grenades at you or wearing armor). Each
area along your path ends with a boss battle where you'll have to find and
exploit each boss's particular weakness. To top it all off, your weapon
options are also limited, so you'll need to conserve ammunition and grenades.
Operation Wolf is said to be the most valiant and capable unit in the
military--can you save the hostages and win the day?Columns III™: Revenge of Columns (Genesis, 1-5 players, Rated E for Everyone,
800 points): This single-player or multiplayer experience expands upon the
game play of the original two Columns titles giving players some extra attacks
to spring on opponents. As in the original Columns, jewels fall into a bin,
and you have to twist and manipulate them to form matches of three or more in
a vertical, horizontal, or diagonal line to keep the jewels from stacking up
and reaching the top. In Columns III, special magical jewels do things like
raise your opponent's crush bar or lower your own, adding an extra element of
strategy to the game. This is a great game to play with friends, so download
it today and jump into the action!

I'd say keep posting them so we know not to waste our time going to the VC channel on our Wii on any given day. We maybe don't need the full press release on some of this weaker stuff, but the info is still nice.

Definetly keep posting them. It's very useful to see these weekly updates here than having to run around the internet to places I don't normally frequent to find them, which'll inevitably lead to me missing out on something cool, which, 8-bit and 16-bit generation being what they are, may not be something you think is particularly noteworthy.

I will only stop reading your posts on VC releases after Samurai Shodown 1 and 2 come out. Those are the 2 main reasons I look forward to VC. Unitl then, please keep em' coming. Besides, we have more fun when u review the crappy games anyway.

for what it's worth, the reason i know what's released when on the vc is from kotaku's weekly updates (which i like). this coming from someone who gets e-mail updates from nintendo specifically about vc updates.
you guys are faster and i check kotaku more often than my e-mail :P
also, i think that some of my favorites are ones that have been ragged on as being 'lame' by you guys so i actually might be missing out on something if you only reported on the 'awesome' ones.

I say keep the VC posts going. Sure, I haven't seen any games I'd like to download since Star Tropics and KOF 94 were released, but that doesn't mean someone won't get excited about Operation Wolf. Besides, it's become a Monday ritual for me to check Kotaku for the new VC releases after arriving at work.

@tk.: American Gods was such an immense letdown for me at the end, I felt like the first 4/5ths of the book were intense and excellent, and then the ending both undermined some of that intensity and generally felt like a Cop-out, as though Gaiman didn't know how to end it properly (I guess he doesn't since there are supposedly sequels coming).
Of course what constitutes a Letdown from Gaiman would be the pinnacle of most other writer's careers, so I don't hold it against him, especially since I did enjoy Stardust and Neverwhere along with almost all his comic stuff.

You never know when a game comes out that somebody (who uses Kotaku as their primary videogame news resource) would want, but you guys didn't think was worth reporting on. Please continue to post the VC updates. Also, who can we write to for VC suggestions? I haven't DL'd a VC game since Street Fighter 2 Champion Edition. There are some classics that I'm really waiting on: Revenge of Shinobi (not the 3rd crappy version but the original Genesis launch title), Flashback, Out of This World, Wizards and Warriors (I), Samurai Showdown. I know licensing and all that is an issue, but still, couldn't Nintendo work on getting licenses for the cooler obscure games or real classics like Earthbound and the Mana games rather than crap games like Eternal Champion. I mean... Eternal Champion? Really?

I'd say don't bother posting them. Considering everyone who reads this site has a computer and thus has access to emulation, I don't think that any of these games is going to sell anyone a Wii, and people who already have a Wii can scroll down the list. I used to check for VC updates in the beginning with an unrivaled fervor. However, it's clear that Nintendo's giving little attention or care to the selections from this past month (and for even longer imo), and who's to blame them with the release of Brawl poised to take up most serious Wii users' playtime. I'll agree that you should keep the updates going regardless, but you shouldn't feel obligated to extend coverage on some of the more obvious half-assed selections. Just these press releases should suffice (although they could use some formatting, like in this week's case).

Keep em coming, if you stopped doing them I'd have to rely on...*shudders*...Joystiq to get the title list in a timely fashion. Plus, it helps keep in perspective when we have a week full of awesome games that the previous several weeks of games that are "just OK" was balanced by the awesomeness.
As far as I'm concerned we still have about another month of crap until we reach a point of homeostasis between the awesomeness that is Sin & Punishment and the other dozen or so true classics on the VC and the remaining dross. As much as I've enjoyed some of the games on XBLA (REZ HD is awesome!) I can't say it has nearly as many games that I truly love on the service as the VC, and the VC still has quite a long ways to go before they even begin to run out of good games for the systems currently supported, let alone ones yet to be added.

@Espiox:
maybe i bought the wrong (or right) games, but all of my VC games worked in PALville over component. The ones i have can be switched between someting like "component compatibility mode", but they work whether this is enabled or not.
It was an issue with some tvs. I think responsibility lay with the manufacturers for not making tvs that can accept standard signals via standard cabling. Not that inintendo didnt have a responsibility to fix it, but they did what caould be accepted - released patched versions to get around dodgy tvs

It's nice to not have to read the email from NOA because Kotaku told me first!
Besides, your angle on games I never played (see all TG16) is invaluable in my decision to purchase them or not.
The press release is unnecessary, just tell us the games.

Keep posting them. It's much easier to check out Kotaku on Monday mornings than to load up the slow-as-dog Wii Shop Channel and see what's new. The insight into the games which I may not be familiar with is useful too. Without it, I would have never known about Sin and Punishment (although that may have been noteworthy enough on it's own).
You could also pressure Nintendo to just release more interesting games on the VC each week -- making this whole discussion moot. I'm sure the Kotaku Tower has that sort of power.

Operation Wolf?! Oh I loved that game. Does it use the actual wiimote for aiming? And does it remove the light gun flash?
If its just classic controller like mouse pointer for shooting, then f that.

If you're going to argue that weekly Wii VC updates aren't neccessary, then I'd make the same argument for weekly Rock Band DLC updates.
The "noteworthiness" of a game is no different than the that of a particular DLC item. It's all a matter of opinion.
IMHO, VC releases are more noteworthy than DLC because a VC release is akin to a new game, where as DLC is simply an add-on.
If you're going to argue that VC doesn't warrant weekly updates, you might as well stop with RB updates as well.

Yeah, its a european HDTV and apparently it will never work properly because the VC Titles are "untouched" i.e. emulated not upgraded like on Live, which means we run into the whole 50/60hz issue. Its fine with N64 titles, anything older and its coloured blocks pacing across the screen.
Not to worry, I was hoping to play Donkey Kong Country again but other than that there are no VC titles im gagging for.

@Ampillion lives a life much like No More Heroes.: Actually, if JonnyDee lives in Europe, then it's an issue with the console, not his TV.
Until April 07, many games in PAL regions would not work over Component due to their 50Hz output. Since the April 11th update however, all titles are required to work over Component. Sometimes you have to hit a button combo (Z+A+2) in the Operations Manual to switch the output mode though. Many of the games released prior to the new rules have been updated too.

@AEREC: Im wondering if the old Final Fantasy games will ever come to VC?
It seems extremely unlikely. The pricing expectations for VC games is much lower than what they're trying to get repackaging them for the PSP and DS. And even for people without handhelds, just about every gamer has some iteration of the Playstation, and you can still easily get the FF Origins/Chronicles/Anthology collections; it doesn't seem like there'd be significant demand.

@MikeTheSpike: Woo, I get to make another MST reference!
I'm assuming that, to get rights to games to put up on the VC, it's like pulling teeth. I equate this to MST because... originally, the crappy movies they showed, they got the rights to on the cheap. There was no demand for the movie itself. Once the show itself became popular, and the rights to show those episodes expired, they ran into a snag. Because now that the base product itself was now more valuable (because of the show.), people started wanting more money for said rights.
In this case, a lot of rights to the older games may be tied up in more than one pair of hands (Like a Goldeneye.) Outside of Nintendo's own software which they could just release at any time, I assume there are deals struck with varying third parties to either purchase license to put them on the surface, or cut them in on a certain portion of it. Whatever the deal might be, the more popular the gaming system itself is, the more valuable those rights look to their current owners. Since, if you figured the system was going to tank, you probably couldn't expect any real money to be made on the rights to, let's say, the NES version of Rampage. But, as the system is doing anything but tanking, those rights start to look more valuable sheerly from the volume of sales they could potentially muster.

While i don't know if Columns supports five players, its possible it does. Bomberman on the VC supports up to five players. Four on Wii remotes and one on a cube controller. So technically, I suppose a VC game could support up to eight local players if it really wanted to.

What really annoys me about the VC is that Nintendo don't give any ratings or some sort of average rating like Steam do (with Metacritic).
The shit games cost the same as the good.
That, and they're not really upgraded or anything. Wifi Lylat Wars, Mario 64 Coin Scoreboards (and race/level times?) would have been spectacular.

I don't see why not. Ultimately, keeping everyone aware of what's being released on the respective consoles' online services is still pretty newsworthy, and like others said, some people might have fond memories of titles that many of us just kinda stare blankly at in confusion or apathy.
@BtownDesignGuy: You know what would be nice to tell New-Perrin? Have them use the Everybody Votes system to let people vote between a pair of games every week, and the one with the most votes gets released on the next week's schedule. Right now the thing's just a goofy distraction, it'd be nice to give it some purpose as well.
