Watch No More Heroes Lose Gallons Of Blood
Posted by Michael McWhertor at 11:52 AM on February 6, 2008
Want to see what Wii owners in Europe and Japan are missing out on, in terms of flowing rivers of blood, decapitations and amputations? Then watch xserothx's No More Heroes Death Scene Comparison clips for a study in regional censorship. This is grisly stuff, folks, and not for the faint of heart of virtual murder. Anyone wary of spoilers should skip 'em, as they're essentially every boss fight in the game.

You've got to be kidding, there are far more gorier games currently for sale in Europe and Australia. Censoring the game for it's PAL release only shows ignorance in regards to the general tolerance of violence internationally, on the part of the developer. It's just your average over the top cartoony violence. What happened to it being more violent than Manhunt 2? Is it me or are the developers utterly UTTERLY pretentious? The game received an M rating by the OFLC for crying out loud, these pissy over the top blood squirts could've have easily been accommodated at the MA classification. Dead Rising and Gears of War are both gorier than this, so are the Mortal Kombat games.
The Japanese are so out of touch with the Western world it's sad. Censoring games only drives piracy, come on who the hell wants to see coins instead of blood? Grasshopper are just cock stains on the ceiling.

Makes me realy sad that us Aussies and Europeans are getting the short end of the stick when it comes to the game. there is no doubt that the blood and stylish death sequences are what makes No More Heroes what it is.
All thanks to the eurpopean publishers being scared they would have another ManHunt fiasco on their hands (though they wont admit it) even though the games are worlds apart.
Imagine if games like Killer 7 and Mortal Kombat had been censoerd they wouldnt be he cult hits they are today.
This is just another reason why importing a US wii has never been a better idea for us Aussies with the ridiculous game delays ie no brawl release date still!, getting watered down versions of games and with the Aussie dollar so strong you can pay up to half price for the same games.

Forget importing a Wii from the states. I am definitely going to modify my Wii, something I was avoiding doing, until now. I’m not paying another $400 ++ for a system I already own for games that I WANT TO PLAY ON THAT SYSTEM!
For a cost of just $110 I can have it installed with a warranty.. the savings I make on importing and it should pay itself off in only 2 or 3 games.
I Have an NTSC N64 and Gamecube and was hoping to avoid this shit with the Wii. Going to get on this now… forget the local market… I should have known better.
For those people that will say “oh.. but it’s just a little fake blood” or “yeah but the game will eventually come out here”.. I say, why compromise? It’s a round fricken world and it’s a global market. We have a choice and the choice I am going to make is not to be screwed any longer and if more Aussie gamers make that choice then FINALLY the companies will realise it is them who are losing out.
Oooh.. I've become emotional.

I don't even own a Wii, but Christ in a chicken basket, that censoring is retarded. Wtf isn'y Japan getting it uncensored aswell? That makes no goddamn sense. What was the last game in Japan that was censored compared to the US version? RE4 is the only one that I can think of, and at least it was just one type of censoring and not applied to the whole damn game (decapitations via chainsaw wielders).

@Striderhayasa: With how much you're complaining about the graphics it truly makes me happy to be a gamer that enjoys his games for plot first, gameplay second, and graphics way last. Graphics are fine and all, but they don't make good games. You polish a turd, and it's still a turd.
That said, I'm LOVING NMH.

@Ashurahori: Killer 7 was flat shaded with minimal textures but that's what it was supposed to be. the textures that were used in the game are better than NMH. But the 3D engine in Killer 7 was cleaner, with a better framerate, better animation.
@Heiae: go back and look at Turok 2 in 640x480. check out the 3D engine. Look at Perfect Dark in 640x480. it looks better than NMH. Better lighting, better effects, better textures.
Look, I'm not trying to bullshit here. I was as shocked/disappointed as a person could be. But when I started throwing in games and comparing them, I couldn't lie to myself because I wanted to shout to the world about how great it is across the board. It is what it is. I like the writing and the characters but the 3D engine in NMH is one of the worse I've seen in recent memory. I'm not going to lie to myself because I'm dying for a 3rd party killer app on a console that hasn't quite delivered on the 3rd party end. Do the comparisons yourself. I did and I stand by my statement.

@JeffPaine: There is a very clear and awesome reason for that "camera" move. (Spoilers follow for those that haven't done this part) As Travis beheads her, the next shot is a first-person perspective through the eyes of Speed Buster's disembodied head as it falls to the ground looking at Travis and her own body. I'm sorry you missed out on that cinematic touch so far.
Suda 51 has snuck a lot of brilliance into this game, while keeping it goofy and fun.

@n/a: I do hope the poor sales in Japan kinda teaches Suda51 to not back pedal on things, make modifications to the game that he could very well just fight for.
Can we learn something here from Rockstar's experience? They had a choice of either editing the content of GTA:SA to preserve an M rating from the ESRB, or make no changes and take an AO rating. Knowing full well that the AO rating would automatically result in reduced sales, perhaps by half, they (eventually) made the edits and took the M.
I don't know what the Japanese version of NMH was rated, but if I recall correctly, CERO Z is equivalent in age-range to ESRB AO, and CERO D is equivalent in age-range to ESRB M. I assume Suda51 went for the D (if that's in fact what NMH is rated in Japan) because Z wouldn't sell as well. Cultural differences dictate differences between what is acceptable at M-level in North America, and what is acceptable at D-level in Japan. For example, generally Europe is less tolerant of violence and more tolerant of sexual content than the United States. And sales dictate whether or not the game is considered successful, which affects the ability of the developer to get funding for future game productions.
Now, whenever someone (like JT) claims that video games are responsible for teen violence, &c, Kotakuites respond by saying that it's up to the parents to know what the games is rated and prevent their underage kids from playing games inappropriate to their level of maturity. Fair enough. But if the ratings are to have any meaning, they must reflect the actual content of the game. And that content has to be "tame" enough that the game actually sells enough to make a profit. The upshot is that if you support a standardized games rating system (which you have to in order to counter the JT's of this world), and you want developers to be able to continue to produce games (because they're able to turn a profit), you're going to have to accept the need for editing of content. There's really no way around it. It's just the same calculation that movie producers have to make in order to keep an R rating rather than NC-17, and for the same reasons.

After seeing this I immediately went in search of a region-free way to mod my Wii. Unfortunately there are no guarantees as each game seems to be different and is software updated. But once they confirm No More Heroes NTSC works on a PAL Wii using whatever method - I'm there! With an imported version from America of course, piracy is bad bad bad.

As far as I realize, we get pretty much the exact same movies as you guys. They might chop a few things in Germany (and perhaps in UK?), but Norther Europe doesn't make violence on screen that big of a deal.
Anyhow, I really dug Killer7 and really wanted to put my filthy fingers on "No More Heroes" as well, but seeing how they totally removed the balls out of the sack and sacrificed artistic integrity on the altar of family entertainment... meh, they can pretty much shove it. The EU version can rot in hell and hopefully fails to sell over here.

For God only knows how many years, the grand tradition was "Japan gets the *real* game, North America gets the censored version." It didn't matter if it was sex or violence. They got it, we didn't. Our Resident Evil 4 had glorious decaptions. Japan's Biohazard 4 was censo- oh, I mean, decapitationally challenged. Relatively recent incidents like "Nevada Girl" (look it up) probably had a lot to do with it.

I had a friend at my place this past weekend and we literally compared NMH or 10 or 11 GC games and 5 64 games and they all looked better than No More Heroes.
StarFox Adventures, Luigi's Mansion, Metroid Prime, Eternal Darkness, Resident Evil etc...they all looked so much better than NMH it wasn't even funny. We played the games on a 32in HDTV and turned Pro Scan on and off to see if NHM looked better in 480i. It looked even worse. A wii game by Grasshopper should not look like total shit. Killer 7 looks better than NMH...

And the blood just adds a different dimension to it. Mainly in the cut scenes, when hack away at a boss and there' blood going which way. Or pouring out of their stomaches for their last dialogue.
All in all I'd encourage, most gamers to at least PLAY or try the game. It was a no brain purchase for me. And right up there with one of my most memorable Wii experiences.

No wonder this game didn't sell in Japan. This doesn't make any sense. I recently watched the anime "Elfen Lied" whose opening scene includes a floating naked woman telekinetically decapitating and dismembering hordes of armed guards for like 5 minutes straight, and that was shown on TV in japan, probably in a primetime slot no less. How is this game any different? Are there different standards for TV and Video Games in Japan?

After watching the Speed Buster censored death for the first time, I can honestly say the censored version is better, with it going slow-motion and following the pair of glasses falling. It just looks stupid in the US version with the camera angle moving for no apparent reason.

This game does indeed demand blood. It was made for it, and shying away from it really detracts from the game's impact.
I do find it a fascinating example of cultural oddities, though. As per the usual generalizations, it's fine for American media to have copious amounts of gore, but if there's any naughty bits, Jesus will come to your house and eat your kneecaps. Anywhere else, it's fine, though.
Granted, there is a bit of sexuality in all releases of No More Heroes, but nothing outside of the norm for these kind of games.
It *is* a fun game, though. I've loved it, so far. Nothing like mowing a lawn for cash and then vertically bisecting a random enemy afterwards.

They have censorship on porn and violence more than most of other countries in Asia.
I guess when you suppress something long enough, it just erupts that's probably what caused all those weird sex fetishes and weird porno...

Anyway, this is not a deal breaker for me, but there are times I refused to buy games censored and I will do that again. Maybe I just don't expect or crave pools of blood playing my Wii? If they censor the story or something else I wont buy it. But it is a sad story.

All this arguing over the graphic engine is pointless. You don't like it? Fine. No what though I do. Does the fact that your well thought-out, opinionated, difference invalidate mine? Nope.
If you don't like it. That's on you. Many do like it and I'm in that category. An opinion is an opinion. We all have one. If you feel that strongly don't play it, leave it alone.
I don't need to be convinced about why it's good or bad. I like it. And I'm not going to try to convince you. It is what it is.

@discipleofjamzy: hold on...stop it right there because that's a bullshit excuse and I'm tired of hearing it. Treasure isn't a huge developer either and they have purposefully stayed very small and yet when they make a game regardless of hardware it's one of the greatest games of its era 9 times out of 10. these are the same developers that said they wanted to make another Gunstar Heroes and purposefully did it on GBA even though more powerful hardware was available and it still ran beautifully. Treasure has always provided some of the best gameplay around as well as pushing hardware to do things that people thought was impossible. So what the hell is Grasshoppers excuse?
Look at Camelot. Those guys aren't the biggest developers around either and they created Golden Sun on GBA which was one of the greatest RPGs of that era and was described more than once as a RPG along the lines of some of the best that Final Fantasy had to offer at that time. On GBA. Not PSP, not DS, Not LIVE, Not PSN...a damn GBA.
So what's grasshopper's excuse? No can answer the question of why it's a crime to want a better 3D engine than NMH's that's obviously flawed as well as the gameplay that NMH provides. So this is what it amounts to? Accept it because Wii owners have nothing else? Fuck that! If worse comes to worse, Devil May Cry 4 is coming out soon son. You think I'll care once that graces my PS3?

@TheIrishNinja: So why does the 3D engine look like shit? Killer 7, even though it's not an open world, it has a 3D engine that can at least hold frame rate and it doesn't clip. The animation for the main characters are better especially in the cut-scenes. The use of color and the stylized look of Killer 7 is cleaner than NMH. It's a cleaner engine. I'm watching it right now as I type this. NMH may be pushing more objects but it's on more powerful hardware and still manages to run worse. That still doesn't explain why a game like Starfox Adventures can be an open world game with better textures, better lighting, better effects, better animation, better character models and it ran at 60 frames per second. That was first generation on Gamecube. It's no rap. Why can't I have that kind of performance in NMH with the same gameplay? Why do I have to swallow a shite 3D engine in the name of style and to support the Wii Brigade? I like the characters and the writing and just the absurdity of it all but it's ugly as hell and I'm running it in 480p.
That's all I'm saying. If 360 and PS3 can be pushed to give great graphics AND great gameplay, why do Wii owners have to eat a poo 3D engine instead of getting better support?

Been playing this game and can't get enough of it. I think that the bigger problem of the censorship is it's effect on mowing down the normal goons in side missions and before boss fights.
It's cool and all to SEE what Mr. Touchdown does to defeated bosses in cutscenes. But in the spewing of blood category, it's a step up to actually DO the slaughtering on a hundred goons. I feel a little guilty saying it, but it's rather fun to mow down a whole legion of nameless goons.

@Striderhayasa - Phillyyakk on PSN and Live.: If you really are that worked up about it, I have a reason why NMH could not give you THAT. In the opening screens the Grasshopper Manufacture screen declares "Punk's Not Dead - Video Game Band". Normal mapping and polish doesn't matter, what matters is Suda cutting loose with every crazy, offensive, fun idea he and his crew has. As he has never been commercially successful so far, the budget was limited but not the imagination. GHM is not holed up in a multimillion dollar studio making Pink Floyd's "The Wall", they're The Misfits, cutting "Static Age" after normal hours at some crap studio. This isn't meant to be a gazillion dollar family movie like "The Incredibles", it's Alex Cox's "Repo Man". It's not another Zelda, it's No More Heroes.
If you are trying to do technical benchmarks with it, I'd say you are missing the point. And THAT is my reason. You don't have to take off your clothes this time. But next time we bond. BOND!

@Akanubon: The game looks very bad. not okay...not kinda sorta good. The game looks VERY bad. Syphon Filter on PSP looks better than NMH. People criticized Zelda TP for looking like a GC game on Wii (which is retarded considering it was made on GC hardware and development tools) but look at what Zelda gave you. A draw distance that was ridiculously long, a framerate that was consistent, great character models, great animation, great lighting effects...Could someone please tell me why NMH could NOT give us that?
Look. I'm all about great gameplay but could someone tell me why is it a crime to call a craptacular 3D engine...CRAP? Why is it a crime to want great gameplay AND graphics that show off the hardware. Notice I didn't say as good as 360 or PS3. Graphics that show off the hardware. Metroid does this. Mario Galaxy does this, you can bet your ass SSBB is going to do it. When PSP games are looking better than a highly anticipated Wii game, something is truly wrong.
