What's It Like Working for Miyamoto?
Posted by Brian Ashcraft at 11:00 PM on February 5, 2008
What's it like working for Nintendo's Shigeru Miyamoto? Ask Super Mario Galaxy director Yoshiaki Koizumi (pictured), who's also worked on Super Mario 64, Super Mario Sunshine and Ocarina of Time, among others. Koizumi says:
Mr Miyamoto is known for taking lots of time to create the best player experience. His demands are numerous and exacting, but I actually really like that. He's effortless in explaining what he wants... We get along well together, and time files by when we're working. Before we know it, sometimes, it's 2am.Good to know he's not a screamer or a wall puncher. That'd suck.

Not a screamer or wall puncher, but an unabashed elitist. If you put out a successful new game (Galaxy), and have it pointed out that the chief original concept in said game was already done in another game (Ratchet), it is nothing less than callous to mock the game by pretending ignorance of it - especially in a way which implies that it wasn't even enough of a success in its own right to merit knowledge of what platform it was released on. That sort of attitude is two-faced and really shows the man's true colors.

I heard a tale once from my friend that Miyamote dispatched his small group of elite ninja's and killed unknown Nintendo developers, their families, dogs and burnt down their house, because they made games that featured green sky... I don't know though, thats how the tale goes.

I heard a story from a friend in the industry about Miyamoto turning up right at the end of Metroid Prime's developement, and being rather loud and disparaging. Apperently he felt so energetic in his desire to express himself that he broke off into Japanese for several minutes or his alleged tirade. Hope its not true, but thats how tale goes. I'd be interested to hear if this was incidental or typical behaviour? Or any more info about said/similar incidents.

I dont know why, but this made me really laugh! Maybe we all had people like that!
Anyhow, Miyamoto is smart, he gets people brainwashed into thinking they are having fun until 2 a.m. everyday. While other game employees from other companies complain!
:-p

@Random J:
Miyamoto's 'upending the tea table' is purely metaphorical, but probably the amount of sheer work created by it provides far more stress than any physical tantrum ever could

@Cappy and @Ixero: Lots of jobs are that way really.
Of course, I might be biased to think that because it's 6am now, and I'm still at the office. We made jokes about the guy who went home at 3am being a slacker.

Well, I bet the wife's not too happy with those 2 a.m. work sessions...
And @JP_Neptune: Of course he's simple! He creates ideas for fantastic games by petting his dog and spending time in his garden! :)

So Miyamoto is a simple guy? I can hear the echoes of disappointment from Shigsy-worshippers around the globe...

It'd actually be funny if he was some crazy bastard throwing tantrums and shit: Upturning desks and kicking water machines down.

@Cappy: That's not just Miyamoto, it's that way overall when it comes to developing and coding games. It gets worse as crunch time gets closer.
@Witzbold: I hear word that the old dragon of Nintendo nudged him towards it, for his own safety when it comes to driving. Even though there's a plan filed in NOJ's HQ in case of his death, I don't think anyone wants to have to deal with that for a few more years and given he doesn't smoke and Japanese people typically live pretty long amounts of time, it's best to keep him about and active as long as they can.

@Ixero: Actually I remember reading a couple of different accounts of Nintendo staff actually working with their spouses on projects within the company after they met whilst at work. I'd be interested in seeing how common this is within the company. And further, how common it is at other Japanese Game devs as there are apparently a lot more women involved in it than in the west.

...Wonder how much fun it is for him to try and park the damn thing here in these teeny weeny parking lots. But those late worknights don't surprise me. A few of the guys I met the other week that worked at the MOFA often worked until LONG after the trains stopped running. Same for those that I know that work in the private sector

@Irenicus-the one and only: Yeah back 3 years ago at the TGS a photographer friend of mine managed to find it at the parking lot. Big letters MIYAMOTO for the license plate also.

Btw I wonder if the fact that Miyamoto drives a hummer says something about his otherwise timid appearance?
I was rather amused when I had found that out myself 3 years ago.

Sounds like a lot nicer to work for this guy then Rockstar games :D
But then again, it is not fair to compare them or anyone else to Miyamoto, because hes an Alien.

@NecronomiconUK: Next-Gen have a license to publish Edge content, they do it all the time. So, yes, this is the exact same article.

@The_Inquisitor: Seeing as people are pretty frank about how Steve Jobs is, I don't see why Miyamoto would be any different, though I guess culture would make the difference.

I assume Next-Gen is just our Edge magazine rehashed, cos this was in the issue that came out a couple of weeks ago.
Intresting article (like most in Edge), it's always really intresting to have a peek behind the nintendo magic curtain. Galaxy really is a piece of genius and Koizumi needs a hell of a lot of kudos.

But is this really believable? I mean, given the weight that Shiggy carries the truth could be something more like this:
"Miyamoto-sama beat me daily with the cord from my mouse. If at anytime I questioned, or he thought I was thinking about questioning anything he said or did, he would burn me by smashing my face into the coffee warming plate repeatedly."
And somehow I expect we would still see the quote in the article.

@Asterra: Yeah, Ratchet totally did that first. Except for maybe Sonic Adventure 2. Or even Yoshi's Island. Even if what Miyamoto said was out of line, what Insomniac said was inaccurate.
But anyway, Miyamoto seems like a pretty good guy to work for. Unless he scraps everything and has you redo what you've been working for ala Twilight Princess.
